First bite!
I'm thick skinned! I'm telling you she's evil! It does indeed feel good to get it out of the way. Almost 2 years with no incidents....gotta start over now.

Re: First bite!
Just got a new female spider (165 g) who was super scared and stressed after the flight and snapped at me more than a half dozen times from inside her new enclosure (nailed the glass a few times), yet was great when I held her last night and this morning. I have another normal female who has never even been in a strike position except at feeding.
Haven't been tagged yet and I have a huge startle reflex that I have a hard time controlling so I appreciate everyone's experiences as this helps knowing that a tag isn't as bad as my mind is making it out to be. I know a tag here and there is just part of these beautiful animals...It's that first one that pops my cherry that I just need to get through...

First bite!
Balophile - it's pretty normal to have strong reflexes to NOT get bit. I had heard hundreds of times and still had strong reflexes to not get bit lol.

The anticipation is definitely worse then the event itself, but I guarantee if you're anything like me you'll JUMP when it happens! I'm pretty sure I yelped too
-
Oh yes, you can't leave out the yelp.
Even now, after I've been bitten a number of times, I'll jump a mile and squeak a little if one strikes at me when I wasn't expecting it. Usually I'm good at reading them, so I'm expecting the strike and just twitch a bit. But every now and then one will catch me off guard, usually a hatchling, and my husband laughs at me when I squeak because one struck when i wasn't expecting it.
The only one I really yelped when he struck at me was a rescued normal male. He was jumpy and skittish from being abused, so I always took it slow around him. I thought we had reached a point where we were getting used to each other, and so I was taking him out more often. Then one evening when I had him out, just talking softly and taking things slowly, out of the blue he turns his head and strikes right at my face! I admit I yelped pretty loudly, causing hubby to come running to see what had happened. Fortunately for me, I don't let snakes near my face unless I trust them, so he didn't even come close to biting me. However, even though I knew he couldn't reach my face, a mouth full of teeth coming straight for your eyes would make anyone yell I bet.
