Where are people getting their frozen rodents from now?
I'm at my wits end trying to get some frozen rats ordered. I'm not sure who to trust and who has reasonable prices. Every time I try to switch to a new supplier they are out of what I need. I'm still a bit lerry about Rodent Pro, thoughts? Help?

Breed rats and freeze them your self? If you dont know who to trust.... Trust your self! Breed your own high quality rats so you know what your snakes are getting.

You will probably save money breeding you own rats anyways. I know I am.

I love Layne Labs! They are a touch more pricey, but I don't care - the quality and service more than makes up for it.

As an example, they shorted me by 5 rats on my last order. When I called them, the guy credited my account within the hour (my choice - he would have sent me those 5 at no charge if I wanted). He was extremely appologetic and courteous.

The rats are positively pristine too. I've been very happy with them. :gj:

I should have mentioned that, I do breed my own rats and mice. I have over 100, but I'm not breeding any more than that as they are in my basement and they smell (I run an industrial exhaust fan in the summer, but it's too cold in the winter). I don't have a way of putting them outside so I supplement with f/t when I'm out of my own rats.

I've been buying locally and at expos. Fortunately my collection is pretty modest so I don't need to order in huge bulk. Unfortunately I have absolutely no space to breed my own feeder rodents.

Layne Labs - they've messed up my order once but they gave me a credit and I have always gotten their shipments super fast and the feeders are nice and healthy! Just note that the medium rats are a little small IMO so I'd get the medium/large sized rats but their jumbo mice are huge! I recommend them.

Stephanie have you tried American Rodent Supply?

Back when I used to order feeders the best quality I ever received was from them far superior to Rodent Pro and Mice Direct.

American rodent has low supply only selling to current customers no new ones.

There is a place called Feedersource (.com) that I'm thinking about getting my F/T from - never used them before. I know they go to a lot of expos, so maybe some people on here have experience with them that can chime in?

That's what I wanted to do, but for some reason our local rodent supplier didn't bring anything to the show, so that was a real pain (the show is almost 2 hours from me). I couldn't tell you how many suppliers I have talked to trying to get some danged frozen rodents! It has been a frustrating mess!

That's who I have been wanting to go through, but they are out of what I really need and I'm not a current customer. I tried ordering mulitple times mid-late last year, but they were always out.

I did get an email back from them this afternoon and they are going to let me order, thank heavens! I'm getting hairless mice since that's about all they have...might be intersting, hopefully the snakes don't care. I'm glad you said they have good qualty rodents! I was hoping it would be alright! I still really want to get some rats, but at least I have some rodents on the way!

I've ordered from RodentPro in a pinch, but now I just worry I'm going to get the bubonic plague if I keep ordering through them...

Can someone fill me in with what's going on with RodentPro? I have used them for nearly eight years with no problems. I heard an outbreak of a virus or something? Just kind of confused.

I've ordered from ars and all the bags were broken. They used cheap ziplock bags.

I personally think American rodent ROCKS! They are like they said on a shortage and only selling to Customers from the past 12 months. (Bummer huh)
Good luck on you purchase my friend.

This does happen with American but the Quality of the rodent surpasses the Bag shortfall.

Don't be too scared. I buy some of my f/t from a vendor at our local expo and he gets his supply from Rodent Pro. I've not had a problem with what I've bought from him. Of course, I can kind of inspect what I'm getting before I buy and I do not buy very many (usually just enough to suppliment a specific size I might be running low on), but still.... One thing I've noticed, which a few other people could confirm, is that these rodents are sometimes urine-stained or have bedding/poop stuck to them. Sometimes I feel like I have to clean them before feeding them off to my snakes. I think most people are bothered more from the lack-luster quality than disease.

I have NEVER had those problems with rodents from Layne Labs. Every rodent is perfectly clean, packaged in a straight position, and are packaged dry (so no frozen blocks to pry apart). The quality is unsurpased.

If you are still worried, then just switch where you buy from. There have been several good recommendations already on this thread. If you are only buying for a few snakes, Layne Labs has another good thing going for them because you can order in very small quantities if you want. :gj:

I have ordered from loxahatchee rodents since i started feeding F/T. The rats and mice look great and are vacumm sealed. They had the best price at the time I placed my order. Customer service is alsovery good.

I've been ordering Rodent Pro for awhile and have been disappointed with the quality. I usually pick them up at the local show, but I've had a few issues with them saying they were out of stuff and not letting me preorder then miraculously having an abundance at the show (which forced me to have to pay show prices). I ordered from a place called The Rat Deli and was very pleased with the packing and quality. Where RP's rats were all jumbled in the bag, Rat Deli's were nicely packed and vacuum sealed. The smalls were a bit on the small end of the scale, but the guy I spoke with said that's because he was pulling my order as soon as he could. I'll seriously never go back to Rodent Pro if I can help it.

The unfortunate thing is, I'm looking to drop like $480+ on a large stock of rodents and the only ones that can meet the order size or don't have immense shipping is Rodent Pro. I'd thought they moved past this. :(

Layne labs had a $135 shipping cost automated just now, that seems like way too much to me. RodentPro quoted me $54 and I filled the box up to 0% space.

I have used Layne Labs and I was very happy with the rats that I got. After seeing so many different options on f/t and I have to say that the quality from Layne labs is well worth it. I have also tried to clean the poo off of rats from rodent pro too :(

Layne Labs is AMAZING. They're a good company as well. They donate a lot of feeders to wildlife centers and so forth. I remember there was a thread a long time ago on cornsnakes.com and there was an injured owl. The OP found the owl and tried to get it some help and was put in a wildlife center and one of the ladies that helped her was the owner of Layne Labs or something. Layne labs immediately sponsored the owl and donated mice for free to feed the owl until it will recover. Something like that.

But I ordered mice from them and they're super clean! All their little feet and tails are tucked in, they're not stuck together or anything. But I am on the west coast in California so shipping isn't so bad for me.
