Bored, fiddling around with logo concepts...
So after seeing some amazing snake art from a member here, and discussing logo's etc...I thought it was time to start on some logo concepts. This shall be my testing ground for logo concepts while we go through this. Feel free to drop your opinion, it's very much welcomed. Even if it's to tell me it sucks and to burn it, I'll be ok...probably.
Anywho! I really like simple logo's. So, that's going to be my first stepping stone. Also, I would like a rose to be in it, as our name will be "Wild Rose Exotics" so...yea. Here we go!

So after a good bit of opinions via facebook, I tried working with a more realistic logo rather than simplistic. Very much still a work in progress, and as always feedback is welcomed and appreciated.

I like the first one you showed.

I like the simplistic one better personally--The thing to keep in mind with logos is that you will need to use it big, but also it needs to be small (especially for business cards) and something simple will be MUCH more readable. Also, if you have something simple, its easier to do a black and white version that still looks great at a small size. I really like the stylized one you did, and I think it'd be way more versatile. The simpler the better! :)

Thank you. This was my exact thought process / reasoning for wanting a simple logo. It just seems like everyone's response was use a real rose/needs more detail/ etc. I wanted a simple, to the point logo that could be scaled easily etc.
Urrgg this is frustrating :P lol

You don't need more detail necessarily on the first one (I like!) as much as definition. Making the petals of the rose more variegated and petal shaped will help out with the realistic vibe people are asking for. I pulled up a picture of a rose on google images here, and notice how the petals have that wavy edge to them and the blank/black spaces where the petals have a drop down to the middle (rather than a continuous succession of petals filling every space). I don't know if you're drawing it yourself or asking someone else to, but looking closely at several pictures of the subject and practicing can usually get that "simple but clear" look.
Logos always make me think of sumi painting in that you're using less detail to create a clear, bold image. If you like the concept then just keep drafting it. Touch up the snake silhouette by taking the outline of one of your BPs (or someone else's) wrapped around something round and BAM! Awesome professional looking logo.
Just some thoughts, that comes across as pretty direct. but really all you're doing is looking for an image you want to associate yourself/your business with. I like the concepts so far! And am still struggling with my own brain storms on how I want my own business "face" to eventually look like.

Thanks! Now that I reinstalled GIMP and working on brushing up on it, I've got a few ideas to try out. I'm doing this myself right now, as I don't currently have the funds for a professional logo set.
I'll update later this evening after we get home and I have more time to play :D
Thank you all so much, the back and forth / brainstorming helps in a huge way!

A good rule of thumb for a logo is, when you are designing it, shrink it down to 1"x1". Thats a pretty common size for a logo, and a lot of people create them at a large size, then when they get scaled down that far they lose a ton of definition and suddenly start to look really cluttered. It'll help to refine your design to consider what it'd look like if it were that small, and you'll start to see what kinds of things should be defined, or simplified, etc.
-
Ok, back to my simple roots ;) Let's see what y'all think of this one. I'm still not 100% on word placement, or if I'll even use words in it at all (perhaps both, just logo for some things, logo with words for others)

I like that one a lot! Maybe a flicking tongue? I do like the rose.
-
Ah yes, the tongue. Let's see if I can make this not look cheesy lol!
and thank you!

I think white font in/on the snake might be pretty cool.

Very nice :gj:
Edit: Aaaand it posts before I'm done. Anyway, the lettering in the snake really draws the eye into the whole image, I like it!

Re: Bored, fiddling around with logo concepts...
I think you're right, all letting on one side, too busy there. As for the tongue, I like it the same with or without.

I like it. Plus it doesn't look like anything inappropriate! Lol. Good times.

Still debating on the font. Can't decide which I like better, white inside, black outside to the left, or black outside split. :confusd:
hrrmmmmmmmmmmm
-
I like the Black on the outside. I really didnt like the way the white letters still hit the background. I also thought it took away from the image. On a little business card you are gonna wanna make the name bigger (at least we did ) and it might get lost inside the snake. Oh love the tongue and the second simple one gets my vote. Great job!
-
First draft business card. Let me know what you think :)

Thanks Corey :) That one is a great graphic, and I really like it! But it isn't a good "logo", as it doesn't scale well and wouldn't be easy (or cost effective) to print onto shirts etc. I do however think I'll use it somewhere on my website :) Even if it's just for fun. I love the realistic graphics for web based stuff!

I used to do vinyl graphics and had FlexiSign Pro.... it was like a $4K software program that could turn a photo into a graphic design.
Wished I burned a copy before I sold it, but I'm kinda by the book like that...
I'm jealous. I'm just way to lazy to come up with anything close to what you have posted. I'm kinda burned out from getting my website going on my own.

I know what you mean, that would have been a great program, but by the books is always a good quality ;)
Working on the website is the next step, we bought the domain already, just need to work on a layout etc. I think the availability page is going to be the biggest pain in the butt. Something easy on the eyes, yet also easy to update / functional. Easy to update is the biggest issue right now, as I'm super derpy with websites. Thankfully my husband is pretty good at that sort of thing, so he's working on a script/code/whatever you call it to make it easier for me to regularly update.
Take a break from design for a little bit, then start playing around with GIMP (unless you have photoshop) and you can easily make some pretty nifty designs in no time :gj:
