Damn mouse
This issue is so funny. I have a mouse thats too fast and smart for my python. He has been teasing him for 3 hours now. I can't stop laughing every time he dodges a close call but then I realised...What to do? Any advice on this silly matter? Maybe its a silly question but its a real issue
-
I would kill it, and try offering it that way.
-
Damn mouse
He doesn't feed on dead mise. I tried before
-
hmm. might sound cruel. but "stun" it so it isnt so fast for him
-
Damn mouse
Hmmm...I would hate to do that...

Re: Damn mouse
If your snake does not eat within 15 minutes then your snake is not hungry and the prey should be removed. You at not doing your snake any favor by leaving the prey in his enclosure for 3 hours, the strikes you are witnessing are defensive strikes.
You are only stressing him.

Something that might work (we used to do this for training dogs to flush quail) if you really don't want to stun it, is to put it in a bag, spin the bag around quickly enough to get the mouse dizzy/disoriented, then quickly put him back in the cage. It works well enough on quail to stop them wandering off, so fingers crossed it will disorient a mouse enough to let your guy grab it. Just a thought.

I have a little plastic tub that i keep live mice in for a few days until trying again if my BPs dont eat em the first go around...i give them some water, bedding, and shredded papertowels..and some mice food until my bp eats em!

Survival of the fittest man. That mouse deserves to be kept as a pet! Haha

Ose tongs to hold it's tail so it's not running around. Like keep it on the floor of the enclosure, but hold it still that way.

Damn mouse
Ty for all your answers. The next day the mouse was gone. I dont assume the snake wasn't hungry. I witnesses that he was just too fast until the end. I suppose the mouse eventually got too courageous.

1. Don't leave live food unattended with your snake. You can do a quick google search if you want to see photographic evidence of why that's a terrible idea.
2. Don't 'stun' prey items. Think about if someone running down the street clocked you on the back of the head and you fell down. When you stood up, how much more likely would you be to take a swing at the next person to get in your face?

X2 You could have just as well found the mouse and a mutilated snake.
1.0 ball pythons - Koba
0.1 pitbull/lab - Cinnamon
0.1 collie/elkhound - Fluffy
0.2 children
1.0 boyfriend

This ^ X2.
This is what you could have happen if you leave live prey alone with your snake...

So you think a mouse can't do any damage to your snake??? Better think again...

Well...Then google it...You wrote I could find it on google...

At the top of google results was a mouse that killed a venomous viper in asia. Don't be so quick to be defensive simply because people are pointing out a poor practice to you. There are plenty of 1 eyed, mangled, scarred, dead, and too-traumatized to eat snakes out there that haven't had an extensive internet presence helping them to rise to the top of a search engine.
This is advice being forwarded from long time keepers and experts. Learn from it and move forward appropriately. Nobody here is judging you or hating on you for leaving the mouse in there overnight. However, nobody is going to 'side' with you about whether or not it's a good practice. It's not. Do as you please, but don't try to argue that what you're doing is the best way to do it.

Re: Damn mouse
Here is another. And yes, this was from a mouse. And the snake had to be put down.

If it has open eyes and teeth it's a threat and should not be left unsupervised.

MrLang: This is a debate forum. I was never defensive, but you can get 1000 different advices on how to care for your ball python. So I need to test peoples statement. It's healthy to be skeptical. I tried google myself but must have used the wrong keywords. Now...The mouse on the picture seems huge and a viper doesn't get that big. I would never leave a rat inside with the ball python but unless you can demonstrate a fair argument preferably with documentation on how a 2 inch mouse can mutilate a BALL PYTHON...Not a viper, not an adder...But a Ball Python then I will be skeptical...And thats not ment as an offence...And neither to be defensive. I just think ball pytons are too bad ass for that statement to make sence...Unless its a freak coinscidence where the mice bites its eye. I will monitor the feeding from now on...But its hard for me to believe. Its an interesting question though.

Damn mouse
To my understanding...The mouse knew the danger and was that fast meanwhile it look for a way to escape the cage...First time ever that a mouse seemed to understand the danger. Others just went straight into the strike zone unaware and naive.

As cool as our bps are, they aren't that bright. And if the snake is not interested in eating, it will literally just sit there while the rodent eats it alive without defending itself.

It's your snake, so do as you want, leave it unattended. But don't say we didn't warn you.

Correct it's about the safe practice of keeping bps. It's pretty well known in the hobby you never leave live in unsupervised, especially over night.

Rob: Ok... I see...And that actually makes some sence...I red that they are very slow to register pain...Thats also why the first thing I did when I bought it was to move the lamp from inside the cage and installed UTH

Edit: Nevermind. Do some of your own research.

I will supervise in the future...And I didn't mean to sound like a smart ass...But also for the sake of doing what is right I feel I need to test the advice I get and be a bit skeptical...Dont take it personal
