Worried

My BPs belly has the whole first half of scutes dried dead skin peeling back. I bathe him twice a week warm water etc etc but its not showing signs of getting better. Also she has sort of blue tint on her belly. This is after I noticed her pink belly starting to come on about four days ago. Help please? I'm worried

Yeah I'll have them up in about fifteen minutes. I actually just gave him a good soak though so it's normally worse than what pics will show. And there's also some type of deformity/injury or maybe just scale rot but I'll post a pic of that too

What are your temps and humidity? Are you using a uth?

I don't use uth but the last owner used one and didn't know it was a terrible choice. Temps are 86-87 warm side 82-83 cool side. I let the temps drop to around 75-78 during the night he's being treated for RI but his treatment started awhile ago and he's been getting better. He has this from the previous owner and its a good thing I purchased him in time. He's a great feeder. Some of this may be unrelated but its just some background info on the snake and that he was not well taken care of.

He's got a scar that is about 5-6 inches tht was clearl from a. Burn and didn't heal quite well but he seems to be happy.

There is no need to drop the temps at all even if you are planning to breed. If you are fighting an RI I wouldn't drop temps at all, matter fact I wouldn't run them less than 93 to 95 period.



First thing I am thinking is scale rot on your pictures. There is never any reason to bath your snake unless there is a stuck shed. Bathing might be making the RI and rot worse.

I'm not saying all uths are bad. But his was of a water bed design. He had it inside the tank. And without the waterbed. Temps shot up to a hundred and twenty within minutes when I had checked it out because of my skepticism. And Maybe I didn't understand but I should not ever drop temps for the night time? Even if he doesn't have an RI? And he is getting anti biotics in a syringe/shot/don't know what to call it. The scale rot being the dry skin that's peeling off or the part closer to the head which is abnormal looking? Or both? And no I'm not breeding but I am interested in the idea but I feel I'm not close to ready with experience and the many different opinions on it. And if it is scale rot I should be lowering humidity and keeping temps up to low nineties through the night?

Also I was told to bathe weekly by a vet who thought it was stuck shed and well he did get to look at it up close. Not doubting you but he did seem to know what he was talking as a lot of his info matched what I've learned/read on bp net. He did not specialize in snakes but in exotics in general. However I haven't seen much about bathing snakes in this forum. (Now I'm assuming because your not suppose to)

You still don't need to bathe him. Just bump up the humidity in his cage by offering a humid hide or misting the enclosure. Bathing can actually make their sheds worse because you re washing away their natural oils that help them shed.

A wet pillow case works great too.

Okay thanks! Just get confused cuz from what I've read with scale rot you lower the humidity but he's about to shed so I have to bump it up. And I read scale rot is caused by sitting on wet bedding for to long

You can mist the cage to up the humidity but you don't want to leave the substrate soaking wet.

What is your substrate?

I would clean those areas with betadine.

A waterbed heater gets very hot very quick. It's hard to tell in the pics but those could be healing burns or the start of scale rot. A snake can force a shed in defense of scale rot.

Keep his temps steady, make sure his humidity is right. Clean those areas and keep a close eye on them. After the shed you'll have a better idea if they are getting better.

Can do. And the force is very interesting, and did not know about it! I will clean the areas and keep everything steady. The substrate is just newspaper but I have a screen lid (which I do not like) but I have made it managable by misting above the screen o keep the newspaper dry and then soaking small towels and getting some, but not all, moisture out if it and placing them on both sides of lamp.

How often should I apply betadine

On the few snakes I have rescued or rehabbed. I would clean the area in question once or twice a day. Just a few drops on a qtip.

It looks a little better. Hopefully with the betadine it'll start speed up healing and keep it clean

After his first shed (under my care) the rot is gone (the rot part. The scutes are,for lack of a better term, repositioning after every shed) and the peeling has stopped! He seems quite happy and a lot healthier then when I first got him when he had RI (two more injections of antibiotics and he's done) I just wanted to say thanks for all the help!
