    Terrible Boredom/Pet Rock
Hello all. I'm here to say that, as of now, I'm feeling the terrible feeling of boredom towards my ball python as his activity is limited to being held and during feeding. Within the confines of his terrarium, he is never seen out of hiding neither during the day or evening. He is essentially a pet hole, as I see him. Despite this, he is highly alert when handled and very active and curious when removed from his terrarium. And no, I do not use his boring behavior as an excuse to neglect him- he is a healthy and well rounded, 2 ft python with water available to him at all times and kept at correct temperatures. He has never refused a meal, nor has he ever regurgitated. I theorize that the fact I feed him two adult mice every feeding instead of one may contribute to his inactivity. (Maybe I'm overfeeding him...)
Anyway, he's my only reptile as of now. Are all ball pythons like pet rocks, because if so, I'm not a ball python kind of guy, and then what do you suggest I do?

A Hiding Ball Python is a happy one. I saw Doolittle say that and it's perfect. They don't make good display pets because they aren't active and if they are it could be cause for concern.

    ^ This is true.

For a more "interactive" snake, check out boa's. I really enjoy handling my BCI's.

Word on the street is BCI's are pretty interactive when compared to boys.

They're very active in the evening. Some of them will wait until you turn all the lights out, and then it's a ball python disco for a couple of hours, when you're not actually watching. I like to take a flashlight out after my husband's gone to bed and go looking in all the tanks. They freeze as soon as the light hits them, it's hysterical. (But they'll usually stay out and climb around if I just turn a table lamp on.)

And I've checked the tubs, too, in the evening with the flashlight. They're all cruising around in there, too.

if I want to hold a snake I take it out, most of mine could care less what time of day it is and appreciate the out time even if they were previously snoozin.

Like others have said, happy ball pythons are hiding ball pythons. If you are wanting a snake that's more active and more of a "display" snake, why don't you rehome your ball python and get a different species. Do your research and figure out what's best for you. Some have suggested Boas but they can get a little big (depending on what kind of boa). I prefer my corn snakes. Most of mine are in racks, but I do have a female corn that I keep in a tank. She's always out and about in the early evening and loves to roam her tank. When I handle my corns, they are VERY interactive and busy. If you don't like snakes that move a whole lot, then corns maybe aren't for you.

All I can suggest (since there are tons of great snakes to own) is to do your research before you buy. Figure out what works for YOUR lifestyle.

Ball pythons are indeed pet rocks. I like them because they are so mild, and I can pretty much do anything to them without paying close attention. If you get a more interactive snake, you will need to show a bit more respect to avoid bites.

As people have said, boas are lots of fun. But if you want a really active snake, I'd go for a colubrid of some sort. Corns, kings, pines, bulls, all active snakes. Or you might be happier with a lizard, like a bearded dragon.
