Feeding/Behavior Journals

When I bought my first snake I started keeping a journal of every feeding, shed, and any changes like moves to new tanks, bedding changes, introduction of new chemical products. It's become a good routine for me and I'm sure it will come in handy if any issues arise. If not, it's pretty cool to know how many mice my snakes have eaten in their time with me. My Corn Snake just had his 74th feeding, and my new BP is at his 3rd feeding with me. Does anyone here keep journals for their animals? Any other details that you make a note of?

I use a database program called filemaker Pro to do basically the same thing. I also use a website called iHerp that is really cool

I track:

feed dates/rodent weights
snake weight
sheds
and have a note section for irregular events.

I made an excel spreadsheet to keep track of my snakes, but then started using iherp because I didn't like the format of the spreadsheet. So far been noting feeds (or refusals), sheds, and full tub cleaning. If anyone regurged or required medical attention I would note that. The balls haven't pooped for me yet, but I have not been noting it for the rosys either. And I keep forgetting to weigh the balls, but I did weigh the rosys last week and put that info down.

always on hand, cant get lost, and I can pass them on to a new owner.:gj:

It takes a few months to fill the card and once its filled you can either throw it out or keep it somewhere.

Would you mind sending me an example of what yours looks like? I'm thinking about something like this once I get my rack set up. Having to get online to fill out this stuff is kind of annoying and inconvenient.

This one was fresh out of the egg. I write in the meal between the date and weight.

ex: 12/29 weaned rat 300g shed start/full shed


I don't keep track of anything else other than my breeders but the breedings are on a separate record card for me.

oh and the "#One Male" is where their actual name goes.
This one was for sale so I don't name them.

I use an iphone app called SnakeKeeper. It allows me to keep info on weight, shedding, feeding, poops, and length. It also summarizes everything into a statistics page that tells me things such as differences in length and weight, and average time between sheds and poops.

THanks! I imagine you end up with a lot of cards after awhile. Do you keep them in an envelope or slip of some kind? Or just paper clipped together with the bin?

I'm envisioning something I used to have with my rats. I had cage cards (which I really only used for my husband, because I knew all of my rats by name and could even tell them apart, much to some people's disbelief!), and there was a little holder I could just slip them into that attached to the cage. My one complaint about that was the card holder was mad of plastic and the rats would chew the corners of it. (A problem we don't have with ball pythons at least!)
