So..does BP.net count as social networking?
I am obsessed with social networking. I'll be the first to admit, I have a problem. Picture me holding up my finger to a customer's face mid-sentence so I can update my Facebook status. I still log into MySpace for cryin' out loud! I know I'm going to hear crickets. I know there's no message from a 62 year old Guy in Florida who just wanted to tell me I'm cute. But I have to check anyway! I don't text and drive. But it does take me an hour to go five miles if I'm in a text convo because I NEED to pull over and respond! It simply cannot wait until I get home. I'm not proud of it, but I am in fact "that" chick.

My boyfriend hates it. He logs into Facebook once a month to update his status to reflect how much he hates Facebook. He doesn't try to tell me not to do it, he just asks me everytime I touch my phone what I'm doing. Then he scowls :)

Since joining this site, I don't spend as much time on Facebook. Now when he asks what I'm doing, I'm like, "Nothing. Just reading some snake stuff." And when I'm done, I'm gonna tell you what I saw earlier on Facebook! (I kid). He doesn't get bent at all! I can read "snake stuff" all day long, no problem!

I think you guys are having a positive impact on my relationship! Thank you, Off-Topic Cafe! Now! What's everyone's Elf on a Shelf doing?!

I think it does :P I love this site and have made many friends on it! Quite a few that live close to me too!!

Other then this one I am constantly signed into facebook and other reptile/arachnids boards.

And my Elf on the shelf LOL Dont know what that means but my Tarantula is on my shelf and she just molted :P LOL

I am seriously addicted to this site. I am always logged in, more so than Facebook. I can't stand 75% or more of my Facebook friends honestly. The only time I check it is to look at the reptile groups, and reptile classifieds.

I think we must be the only people with kids who don't have an elf on the shelf...my poor girls! :(

I'm not clear on the elf either. It's some Christmas thing a lot of my mom-friends are always facebooking about. From what I gather, you make a mess and tell your kids the elf did it?

I'm probably wrong. I'd love to know how it really works though, if anyone here knows!

One of my favorite things to do is to update my status with a funny quote of the day. Guess what my Facebook status is going to be in about ten seconds? Nine...eight...seven....

I quite enjoy this site: I've learned so much from it and I'd like to think I've helped others with my suggestions or opinions. Wouldn't say I'm addicted though (though I do jump right on to show off a new addition right when I open up the package), and I personally hate Myspace and FB: I may be one of the only 21 year olds who don't have one.

It's a type of social networking. We socialize and make useful contacts. It's almost drama free and I really like that.

I saw (on some stupid FB post) an elf squatting and filling a snickerdoodle (the Hershey's Kiss kind) on a shelf. That was the only time I've heard of Elf on the Shelf until this thread. Now I'm hoping the typical elf career is not baking cookies for Christmas parties.

You're my favorite responder when I post something other than nonsense! For real. If I have a legitimate question, or am reading a post by someone else with a good question, I actually hope for you to respond.
You're to-the-point and knowledgeable without coming across like an arrogant wench. Now that I think about it, I could probably learn more than good snake care habits from you! :)

Nope, you're not alone. I have no idea what an Elf on a shelf is.

Yes, my phone is logged into tapatalk 24/7. I get on first thing in the morning with my coffee. While my house sleeps, I bp.net...:D

I spend ridiculous amounts of time on this site. It's easy for me to have up in the background at work, and I just like keeping a "pulse" on the reptile world. Not sure if it counts as social networking, as I spend more time reading than anything. Lurked for years, and two years as an active member I still learn new things every day :D Love this place

I'm loving this site! Not posting a whole lot, but reading a lot, and learning, and still getting a feel for the general environment of it.

    Elf on a Shelf.... :O
    That's just scary.

I'm logged into BP.net almost 24/7. I don't post anything a good chunk of the time...especially not when school is really hectic for me, but I'm on several times a day at the least. I start my day with BP.net and coffee, check it periodically throughout the day, and end it by reading all the new nightly updates before going to sleep. :P I get really frustrated actually when there's nothing new to read for hours or even a couple days! lol. I also check FB all the time...but usually that's just for something to do while waiting for new posts here. ;)

You can usually tell when I'm really bogged down at school based on my activity level. I will post regularly, almost every day...if not everyday, when I'm not super busy. But then suddenly I don't post for days or weeks...and that's when I have exams or something. Mid-semester on, my activity level tapers off. I still usually am lurking and reading...just not taking the time to reply. :P My FB posting on the other hand...will increase when I get busy with school. Mostly complaining status updates about some class or another...but still. :D

I totally relate to this! :P Sundays can get pretty slow on the forums and that's one of my quietest days at work where it's possible for me to wait all day with nothing to do but read BP.net... But everyone has a life and is enjoying the weekend rather than posting, haha

I did NOT see that coming! I just knew you were going to be the one to end the Elf mystery. What about Pinterest? Can you tell me about that? It looks like you click through pictures of sweaters and candles all day long and then post what you like all over Facebook. You know, in case one of your friends you haven't seen since high-school want to buy you a Cartier watch and isn't sure what your style is.

This is the story behind elf on a shelf:

    http://www.elfontheshelf.com/AboutUs/TheTradition.aspx

Basically, you move the elf around each night to a different location etc. er I mean..he flies back and likes to play games and hide and seek...

Maybe I should get one. My boyfriend is working out of town. In the 30 hours he's been gone this week my cat has chewed up the power cord to his computer, I've melted a plastic spatula, his blueray player is on the Fritz (I think that one's just an incorrect install on my part), and I spilled an entire Costco sized bag of oatmeal. That's going to be one of those messes you keep finding traces of for years!

I still have four days to go. He's 32 and far more serious and logical than I. Be straight with me, what are the chances I could pull off, "That damned elf is trying my last nerve! You wont even believe what he did now!"?

"I know it sounds ridiculous, but it's not just me! Check out Facebook, it's happening to everyone! One even took a crap on a fresh baked cookie in the middle of the night!"

Add to that the elf on a shelf contest that has become rather inappropriate! That's where I learned about this (was posted on a blog i follow).

I don't get pinterest either. A friend of mine said I "HAVE" to do it, I'll love it. So I tried it. Nope. Just don't get it. Searching Google and bookmarking sites i like is far easier than using Pinterest.

Elf on the shelf looks creepy as heck. With his clown-like smiling face...*shudders* Unless the jerk does housework or cooks, he needs to get the heck out. Making messes for mom to clean up, teeheehee...I don't THINK so!

Now I have to admit I'm pretty in love with Pinterest. I aspire to be crafty, though. And it's really good for recipes. But yes, mostly it's stuff I can't afford and clothes I don't fit into. :)

I'm pretty sporadic on bp.net. It's difficult when there's nothing new to report on the home front. Snakes are pairing (regularly), eating (mostly), crapping (all the dang time), and shedding (does it seem like it's the whole collection at once? or is it just me?). I haven't even found the time to take updated pics in my lightbox. :( I have loads of time at work today (obviously), but the snakes nor the lightbox nor the camera are anywhere close. I like facebook for keeping up with family and friends, but like most of you, the majority of my friends aren't interested in pics of my snakes. :(

I can't help but to wonder what was going through some people's minds as they came up with their photos... (or story plots, as some of them became!)

while i do consider this site a type of social networking site, because it's a great way to network out to people in the same hobby, it's nowhere near the "life log" that Facebook is. that's kind of what i'm against.. or rather choose not to be a part of.

I completely agree about the creepiness of facebook! I do have one, but I hardly put anything on it, and what I do put on I have so many privacy settings on it that hardly anyone can view it. People who are not friends with my facebook profile can see NOTHING on my profile. "Friends" who I have not personally met can only see a very few select things (such as a few random photos, like some cows I took pictures of...). And then my other "levels" of friends see only what I allow to be seen. The things I post as status updates or share are rarely "personal" pieces of my life (one exception being my rants and complaints through my ordeal of living next to a drug dealer....), generally just randomness no one cares about. Mostly I use it to keep up with other people I don't see often, or stock people I don't know. ;) (not really lol)

I find it creepy that people do post so much to Facebook. I just can't believe it. Your fully name, full date of birth, birth city, current residence, email address, and home phone number? Honestly?! And then posting everything you do throughout the day WITH a location tag?! Yikes!!!

As hooked as I am, I don't put personal details on there. I'm always a little surprised at what people post for 600 of their closest friends to see!

As for not having a Facebook making you less trustworthy- I completely disagree. 99% of what I see on Facebook is either complete fabrication or grossly exaggerated. I see women with 18 albums full of cropped headshots. I see mothers posed with their scantily clad 15 year old daughter commenting on how beautiful she is. If you believe everything you see on Facebook, you'd have to believe that women ALWAYS have their hair done and their make up on. Every man in America has a piping hot five course home made meal waiting when he gets home. Kids never tell you you're the meanest mom ever. And we all secretly hate our best friend.

I wouldn't trust anyone who thinks you're sketchy for not having a Facebook!

Okay, thanks for the reassurance, I thought I couldn't trust you anymore. Oh yeah, you always log out, you loose major awesome points if you don't take the opportunity to make ppl say weird stuff if they leave their account signed in and unattended.

oh my goodness, major pet peeve of mine inc...

Listen up little pre-teens...you did not "hack" your besties account. You merely used the same computer and said bestie forgot to log out. This does not mean you "hacked" it.

pfft...back in my day *gets out cane* we had to upload keyloggers on our friends computers to hack their accounts and mess with them. Dang whippersnappers...*shakes cane*

    I'm done.

*puts cane away* That's my shakin' cane. This here's my walkin cane *gets another cane*

Why do the prank status updates always have to do with poop?

I can remember two times this has happened to friends of mind (both male lol), and both times their significant other posted, "I like to poop"

Then one of them got back at their significant other (my sister), and instead posted "my husband is the best man in the whole wide world". Lame. :P

You're to-the-point and knowledgeable without coming across like an arrogant wench. Now that I think about it, I could probably learn more than good snake care habits from you! :)
