Empty Tank Syndrome

As if having an empty 10gal tank wasn't enough......

Ya'll know that feeling, when you have an empty tank, you get this intense urge (need?) to fill it with some fascinating critter? I've had an empty 10gal for a long time now...ever since the gerbil died shortly after we got Caesar (No, the two events are not related! LOL). I've spent many an hour dreaming up what manner of small, reptilian critter might enjoy living in it.

Well...today...I became the proud owner of a 45gal hexagonal aquarium tank...AND...a 75gal long! HOLYcow! What the heck am I gonna put in these? I don't know yet! I do know it is highly unlikely that we'll put anything in them before we move this summer...but in the meantime, I'll dream...and drive myself nuts!

The deal was just too good to pass up. $150 for both those tanks, plus a table that the 75gal sits on, with matching woodgrain. VERY sweet deal!

    Now.....what to put in them........???

How long is the 75 gallon?

Unless it's an odd shape, 4'/48". 75's are normally 55 gallon that are 18" wide instead of 12".

All I know is that it's a standard 75-long...so I would imagine maarken is right about that. All of it is still crammed into the back of the van until my hubby can help me wrestle 'em into the house.

You can name him Leon.....Leon Skinks!

Cresties in the 45, Shaggy to the 75, and a Rankins in Shaggy's 20. :)

I'm seriously considering Cresties for the 45. Especially if there's no chance Dean would let me have a chondro. LOL Plus, I don't know if a 45 would be big enough for a fully grown one. Sure would be pretty in there, though. Cresties will too!

:) BP sounds like an obvious choice when considering what my next herp would be....but it's actually not appropriate for either of these tanks. The 45 is too small for a grown bp (it's more tall than long...hex shaped) and the 75 is too big. Besides...hubby wants me to get a cage that LOCKS for the BP. LOL

yeah what I meant was try to sell off the one you can't use, then use that extra money and a bit more and get an animal plastics cage with all of the fixin's for your BP haha I know those cages aren't appropriate size, I just really want you to get a BP. :)

I agree with Dean on that one, you definitely need a secure cage for a bp (whether it officially locks or not). I don't know that 45 really is big enough for a fully grown chondro, though it's considerably too big for a juvie. It would fit anywhere from 1-6 cresties very well, though, or a gargoyle and a couple of cresties or something along those lines.

Jonah...I WILL be getting a BP! Just not until after we've moved and settled into our new house. Part of a deal I've made with hubby. :) So one is definitely in my future. And a lot more after he's retired!

In the meantime...I get to have fun with these tanks.....

I didnt realise cresties require so much room. They need a 45 gallon? Sorry I have no clue.

I don't think they NEED a 45 gallon....just that that happens to be what I have now. As Marla said, I could probably put up to six of them in there comfortably. Although I would be concerned about them getting territorial or something. I haven't done any extensive research on them yet, myself.

Paul...when the time comes, I will probably order an Animal Plastics cage for the BP. Since hubby is so particular about security and locking...I don't think he'll mind shelling out a few extra bucks to make sure!

I agree, the cam locks are only an extra 7 or 8 bucks, and from what Ive been told the built in heat is awsome too.

Nah, Judy just happens to have a 45-gal that would be suitable for them. One crestie can be housed in a 20-gal tall or equivalent for its entire life, and 3 can be housed in a 29-gal tall or equivalent. But if you need an excuse to buy a cool tank, cresties are certainly a good one.

And Judy, males are generally ok with each other if raised from babies together, but otherwise it's advisable to house females together, a male with females, or house them in a particularly large enclosure with plenty of room for hiding. Carmen and Sandiego are now happily hanging out in the leaves together, and Scooby and Waldo also get along very well together though they're a bit young to be fighting anyway.

Cool, Marla! ......I wonder what it would be like to breed them? eh...I think I'll take this to the Rhacodactylus forum. Meet me there! LOL

golden geckos are awesome, too. and much cheaper.

Will, I had also suggested golden geckos and day geckos to Judy as being suitable for the enclosure, or even an appropriate combination of arboreal and terrestrial with similar husbandry requirements. But I think she'd prefer something more handleable than the goldens, particularly with her daughter being an aspiring herper.

The problem with most gecko and lizard options, is that I'm way more into snakes than I am the legged critters. So I have to be especially enamoured with them to want to care for one that needs so much attention. (Relative to a snake!) Very few fit into that category...although it is growing over time. :)

Here's a question for y'all....What snakes would do well in a 45gal tall hexagonal tank? In the long run, it's probably too small for a fully grown GTP, not to mention those are expensive snakes. What arboreal snakes would thrive in such an enclosure?

Judy, have you checked into Amazon Tree Boas? I'm not sure myself whether the 45 gal. is sufficient, but ATBs just sprang to mind.

At any rate, I'm sure you'll be able to find something to fill those tanks at the show in May!

I'd always make sure you have a spare tank in storage at home. That way, when you spot a good deal on a creature you've been wanting, you can get it without needing to buy a new cage!

I have a sweet rescue BP that will stay pretty small. She's a rescue that needs a good home. Her name is eyegone, needless to say she only has one eye. If you are interested I can shoot you a picture.
