Sheding help

is it okay to peel the extra skin off a snake afer it has shed most of it..... my snake shed and had some left over on its back so i pulled it off..... is that bad?

last time Sixx did that, i put him in the tub in warm water, and rubbed it off. it didn't seem to bother him, but i am no expert. he was a whole new little man when i dried him off, and my tub was a mess!!!!!!!!

pulling it off is generally bad and can actually cause bleeding but rubbing it off while in water seems to be okay (at least from the care sheets I have read and posts I've read on this topic.) others will know more.

Well just ripping it off can harm the snake. But wetting and rubbing off the excess skin is okay as long as your gentle.

You have to be very careful about it. If you can imagine peeling sunburn and going too far, you'll understand why. Generally it's better to let them slither through a damp towel or soak them and peel just a little at a time, very gently or soak them and then rub the affected area with a Q-Tip.

Yes, i have read that if you peel the old skin, you could actually peel off one or more of the new scales underneath. I'd just get a good-sized rubbermaid, a wet towel, a half inch of warm water in the rubbermaid. Then put your snake in there for an hour, and the skin should be gone.

Make that an inch of lukewarm water instead and you're good to go. It should not feel warm to your touch or can easily be too hot for the snake.

when i peeled it off i did it really slowly but now i know not to do that..... thanks for the help

Amber's last shed left a very tiny patch of skin on the back of her neck, it was just hanging off. I gently peeled it off, and it didn't even phase her; I'd like to think she appreciated it.

I would think that if its truly ready to come off, then peeling it a little shouldn't hurt. But if it offers any resistence at all, it's not ready.

Jojo had a patch of skin when he first shed. Maybe he was not "experienced" enough to make a clean shed. But i put him in a rubbermaid box with some warm water about an inch deep and that seemed to help him out. I didnt bother removing the patches of skin he got rid of them with his next shed. If you BP is young just make sure if he does have a patch of old skin left on him i say leave it on UNLESS IT COULD CAUSE CIRCULATION PROBLEMS like in the tail or if the patch of skin wraps around a portion of his body then in this case soaking him in warm water for about 30 minutes does wonders.

Izabelle sometimes does this, to help her out my method is to get a sanitary squirt bottle filled with water (luke warm or room temps) wet her down and grasp the unattached portion, lightly tugg and she will help you out by moving herself with your hand stationary. I guess her and I have a good understanding of whats going on between us.
