Just out of curiosity...
I see a lot of really long collection lists at the bottom of some posts. How many of you are just collectors/hobbyists who don't breed or have current plans to?
-
I gave up on the "list" thing :rofl:

Re: Just out of curiosity...
Definitely on the 'hobby' side of things, here.
I built my 4-stack vivarium, and promised that I would keep my collection to ONLY 4 snakes. Now that the condo is full, no more for me (for quite awhile, anyway).

I just don't have the time or space to do the breeding thing. Maybe down the road....but for now, I'm happy with my 4.
1 Miami Phase Corn
1 Neon Creamsicle Corn
1 Pied BP
1 Bumblebee BP

I consider myself more of a collector hobbyist. Any plaining I've done for the breeding part is more to expand my collection I guess as time goes on and I'm breeding more then I'm able to keep and selling most them that would be a nice spot to reach but I still just think of this as an interactive hobby where if you got a little luck maybe make a little pocket cash or just add to the fun
-
Definetly plan on breeding. Breeding as a hobbyist though. ;)

I am going to be breeding to get some snakes that I want, that I would like to make my own. And I'm sure it will snowball into more that I want, lol... So who knows.

Re: Just out of curiosity...
I asked because I (like everyone else, I'm sure) have been looking at pictures of different Morphs and I'm like, "I want that! Ohh, and THAT! I need one of those!" And then I start Googling and find out that I've mentally spent $1,000,000 on snakes that serve no purpose other than the personal joy and fascination they bring me. Then I convince myself that one is plenty, as it's a pet. The next day, I'm back on here, looking up things on your lists, finding that I MUST have a ________, and then I'd be set! But I wouldn't be set, would I?
I really, really, really want a Pewter!

Re: Just out of curiosity...
Only $1,000,000.00 ?? You've done well!
I have 4 different Banana morphs on my mental list...and that's just after looking around the net for the past 10 minutes!!!
I'm gonna do the honesty thing here - I don't think ONE pet BP is enough. Having owned most domesticated animals at one point or another in my life, I can testify to the fact that snakes are DEFINITELY at the top of my list for several reasons. The effort/energy it takes to care for one properly is roughly 1/10th of what it takes to care for...let's say...a dog.
That said, I own a dog, too...and love her to death. Buy my snakes are, by far, my favorites.
GET THAT PEWTER!! They're stunning!!!
And get a Pied, while you're at it.
And a Spinner Blast.
And a Banana.
And a Desert Ghost.
And a Champagne.
And...and...and ;)
-
It is a slippery slope for sure lol
you could, as someone else stated, set a limit for yourself...build an enclosure or rack o whathaveyou only big enough for your limit.
I'm in trouble now because I want to breed bps, but I'm also looking at all these other species I want. Hoggies, brb, BCI, BTS, Cresties, tegu...I don't think I want to breed all of those...but then again...dang I need to win the lottery!

I'm all about ease of care! But is it so easy when you have 900 of them? :)
It's never a problem to get someone to come feed my cat (I also require my cat sitter to talk to her in a pleasant voice, and give her hugs, but I'm not sure she actually does), but I don't think people are as willing with snakes. My cat weighs 19 pounds and my sister is seriously concerned for her safety....because I have a 210 GRAM snake in the house.
I'm really trying to hold off and have just one snake. You guys aren't helping :)

I've managed to only have one snake, my normal male cornsnake "Slinky" for seven years, but that's because my mom wouldn't let me get any more snakes. She used to be afraid of them. I tried getting into other species of animals- lizards, birds (not that I don't love my sweet african grey parrot Suit), hedgehogs, but what I really wanted was more snakes. She realized that and I quickly went from one to 10.

Re: Just out of curiosity...
Started with 2 normal ball pythons in a package deal. 3 weeks later I had my first spider ball. Bought a 40 gal Exo Terra front door terrarium on black friday(SO SWEET), and now I'm looking for a new home for my normal BP girls to make room for my red blood python. I'm out of space! I want more! I want to breed a mystic potion! AAAH What to do!

Re: Just out of curiosity...
Hello. My name is Breanna and I'm addicted to reptiles.
I bought my first corn snake in August of 2012. 15 months later, I have 5 corn snakes and 3 ball pythons. I do plan on breeding. Hopefully my girls will be ready by this time next year. My male is going to a friend around Christmas to be bred. I'll be getting one of his daughters. I also have plans to get another corn snake and another female ball python next February. I'm also upgrading my rack to hold more snakes so I can eventually get more. :rofl:I plan on only breeding one corn snake a season but my ball pythons every season. We'll see how it goes. My largest corn snake is only 140ish grams, so she HOPEFULLY will be ready to cool next winter. We'll see how it goes.
Also, go ahead and get that pewter ;) I want one as well...and an albino, and a pied, and a cinnamon, and a bumbleebee, and....

I have an African Grey as well. He's actually my boyfriend's and he basically hates my guts. But he lives in my house and he doesn't make the rules, so I say he's mine :)

Re: Just out of curiosity...
5-6 years ago I bought our first bp for the kid, got "stuck" taking care of her, but thought she was cool so no big deal.
discovered, through the internet(of course) that they came in a vast array of patterns and colors, so I got an albino boy and a het female.
a few years later two were big enough to breed and the rest is history, lol.
but seriously, this will only be my second season breeding.
have 13 right now, 4 of the girls are breeding size/age, wish me luck.
I have seen some major set ups though and WOW!
Still just a hobby, for now... am I addicted, YES!
