Stupid people shouldn't have snakes ...
So my friend just got done telling me her drugy brother has a adult normal bp. And that she thinks I spoil my two bp's to much because they have a reptifogger a couple hides a big water bowl some fake plants logs and branches and They have the digital thermometers. And I completly care fore them. And that she thinks her brother is awesome because he kept it simple and has that "whatever" personality and has a tiny water dish some tree shavings and a heat lamp in a clear glass .tank........no hides. No humidity. No thermometer . Nothing. Empty cage. ... I have a soft spot for snakes now and it makes me mad when dumb people don't treat them right. It makes me want to go pick it up and take it home....I can't stand dumb people!!! And neither my friend or her brother can be reasoned with...
Sorry just had to vent a little.
    Am I being dumb?

I think people have no idea how expensive snakes really are. They buy the snake, then later find out that it costs a lot more than they thought. And then there is the fact that they don't know how to properly take care of any animal, let alone a snake. That's why I take great pride in knowing that my snakes have the best habitat I can provide.

I disagree, my tubs have a water bowl and a hide with aspen bedding. Thats it. Ran me about 30USD total for each snakes, cause I "splurged" on an RBI hide for the tubs.

To me, a glass tank with a bunch of...stuff in it just makes my job that much harder to maintain the "ideal" environment.

EDIT: I feel inclided to add that I do have thermo and hydro meters for all my cages too.

But what of the cost for the rack, thermostat and heating?

Also, they are talking about single snake enclosures. Glass terreriums need that extra decor fot security, etc. Snakes are much more expensive than most impulse buyers think, if they care for them properly (and still use glass). Housing multiple snakes in a rack is very cost effective, but most people that have a single BP don't even know that's possible. If you have a thermostat for each glass enclosure, that's $100 each alone. (Assuming you are using a good one) snakes are not the most expensive housing by far, but they still have husbandry that needs to be met. (I'm not knocking the rack, I use one. Just saying most pet store buyers are clueless and think a 10g with repticarpet and a heat light is good)

Op, yes...people are generally ignorant. No, you're not wrong. Keep being awesome and giving your babies the care and love they deserve.

I posted wrong sorry I guess he doesn't keep a water bowl in there full time. So its just a light and bedding. And If you have a rack that's different cause your obviously taking care of them. Its not the decorations I'm mad about its the essential stuff. Just a light and some bedding in a tank is not meeting the essentials.

I don't think dumb is the right word. Ignorant yes, and I have less patience for ignorance than I do stupidity.

Not ignorant, dumb. Ignorant is what they used to be before you told them the proper way to keep a BP, but completely ignoring what they found are the proper husbandry requirements is stupid and irresponsible. It is unfortunate, but you can't fix stupid. I would liken it to science in regards to evolution when you are talking to religious fanatics about it.

Person 1: "Hey, here is the science and the supporting evidence."
    Person 2: "That's stupid, I didn't come from a monkey."
Person 1: "That isn't even close to what I just said!"
Person 2: "Whatever, that is flawed science and I am going to make a conscious choice to ignore it."

I completely spoil my snakes and I honestly see it as the standard of care. For terrarium keepers anyway.

Unfortunately, the "cooler" a pet is, the more often you're going to see it in the wrong hands. Pit Bulls can be amazing family dogs, I've seen it. But there is a perception about them that makes them a desirable prop for hoodlems, for lack of a better word. Large parrots are gorgeous and incredibly intelligent. But they're unique and expensive, so they have become a status symbol for some, who have no business owning a bird that can be as intelligent AND EMOTIONAL as a toddler. Snakes are unique AND "dangerous", plus you only have to feed them once a month, so everybody with $50 and something to prove can have one.

It's sad that so many people think of such beautiful and fascinating animals as an extension of themselves, an indication of how awesome the owner must be. It's not good for the animals and it's detrimental to the reputation of certain breeds, and in some cases the entire species.

But that's just the way it is. Be proud that you have something you really care about and know that most of the time people like you've described don't have a life-long passion. He'll come across something even cooler and he'll get rid of the snake. And the cycle will continue.

I agree that they are more expensive than people think. I got mine without being fully aware of what all was involved. With that said, I'm totally commited to my little guy now and will get whatever he requires for as long as he needs it. I do keep him in a tank and I realize that is more expensive and labor intensive but I want to be able to admire him !!
It is an addictive hobby... I can see that clearly now !!

That is upsetting... I spoil my snakes. My fiance and I built our terrarium ourselves to make sure it would be perfect for our animals. It breaks my heart when people cant be bothered to stick in a 15$ half log for the poor creature to hangout in, especially in a glass tank..
I got my Pastel from a snake rescuse actually. he was found in a dumpster with the start of scale rot and clearly hadnt had a good meal in a while. He is a gorgeous animal and such a snuggle bug he waits at the front of his tank to be taken out and loves exploring. It breaks my heart that someone coouldnt even be bothered to bring him to a shelter or something, and just tossed him. Its a shame, and some people should not be allowed to have animals.
