Damage of a 14' retic bite
Cruising around the web I found a thread on Burm Junkies with a guy posting shots of the aftermath of his retic biting his arm and hitting an artery. . . Don't click if you don't want to see the shots.

    http://burmjunkies.com/showthread.ph...le-viewing****

Just a reminder for those of us who keep large. Puppy dog tame or not, always treat animals with respect, and understand what their body language tells you.

That's pretty crazy! I'm glad all of the "My Ball Python Bit Me" posts here are a bit less gruesome...

Jeez that's a bite to leave some cool scars lol at least nothing too bad came from it. I find puppy dog tame to be a weird saying cuz puppy's bite all the time...

Yeah I really dislike that "puppy dog tame" term aswell. It gives people a false sense of security around animals that can inflict damage. People use that term all the time with monitor lizards.

Ugh ugh, I got even more disturbed reading it and reading about how someone was explaining how someone got a "degloving" bite from a retic where it peeled the skin from their wrist to their finger tips.

Yep. It was a burm. :)

Also...dang! That is the worst bite I have seen by far. I've hear of the possible damage a large constrictor can inflict, but to see it...has a whole different effect. Crazy! Glad the guy's okay.

That degloving bite would be a bad one! Degloving is soo soo gross just not right seeing that much hand bones lol I seen one while doing a shadowing in the emergency room, fascinating like if your into medical and all that a degloving is one you can't take your eyes off but if your belly is a weaker one I recommend not looking.

can't be worse than a faceoff . . . but yeah, there was no pictures of the degloving, just a mention of one in a post

Haha never seen a face off I'm sure one day I will tho. Seen some cool things that my family won't let me talk about at meals or fancy get togethers lol

I dont see how a snake bite could cause a degloving injury and peel back the skin from the wrist to the finger tips...?

Nasty bite that the OP posted, glad to hear the guys ok.

I could see it if a big enough snake got hand in its mouth bit down and twisted (which would tear all the skin up) then the person pulled their hand back and off comes the skin since the snake still has a hold of it in a way. (No teeth threw the degloved skin but inside the opening pushing the skin off as the hand is pulled out.)

Yea maybe. Idk. I picture the bites more as grabbing on tight rather than twisting and tearing. Id have to see it to believe it :p

It just goes to show that just because big constrictors don't have cutting teeth like some sharks or large predator mammals, it doesn't mean they can't inflict SERIOUS damage with even a defensive bite.

Lots of BIG teeth, serious potential for a life-threatening injury or long-term/permanent damage.

I'm happy to take a nip from any python or boa under 5lbs. Much bigger than that and I give more serious respect to the damage they can dish out if I do something stupid.

I don't know if I beleive that he didn't pull away. I've never been bit by one that big, but close. It always leaves puncture wounds, not slices. I could see how a slice could happen if you were to drag your skin along those teeth (from pulling away).

I wish he would have said why it happened, other than that yes there were things that he should have done differently. Wonder what was going on.

Even a gentle bite from a big predator can cause devastating injuries to human tissue. I'll have to see if I can't get Kara to post some pics of her hand after a big retic grab her hand. It looked like she lost a fight with a chainsaw..

Yeah it really sucks that we have to worry about watching what we post on matters such as this. I really appreciate the guy posting this because it shows people how much damage these snakes can do and how much responsibility they are when you take them in. But your right, we will probably see these pictures/videos on some animal planet episode about exotics being evil and the owners being the most irresponsible people in the world soon enough.

I know, ithought that too. The sad part is even though that is a bad bite its nothing compared to what my german shepherd could do to someone. Yet not many people are trying to ban her. :(

Don't get them started. Some places are trying to ban pit bulls.

And didn't the guy say he was building rat racks? Could he have been touching feeder materials and forgot to wash up before going near his retic? And I agree, definitely looks like he tried to pull away.

Minnesota has a write up in the state constitution stating that they can't make any bans on a dog breed.( not sure how its worded I just know it was used to drop the two try's the lawmakers made on banning pits) but what the city I live in is doing every land lord won't rent to pit bulls any more it's terrible I was homeless for 3 weeks before I bought my trailer. I looked everywhere and they all said no pits and no bully dogs

    Seriously? As in a bulldog?

If someone ever said I wasnt aloud to rent from them because of my bulldog I would punch them in the adams apple.

My bulldog is the sweetest and friendliest little attention seeker.

    On topic :

In the post it says that the retic twisted his head thats why his skin teared. IMO I am never having anything bigger then a BP. Thankfully I still havent been bit by a snake. Yet...

Ya all bully's like bull mastiff, well any mastiff, any kind of pit from American pit bull- American bully's and even dogs crossed with pit like a lab/pit it's crazy the pounds around here are always full of pit bulls. They say they have to buy too high of insurance if they rent to those dogs, they use same excuse to deny herps (people I rented from at least did that with snakes) so I'm sure my old landlord would love to see this picture haha an ya some kind of pulling or ripping happened. Looks painful is all I know.

Yeah I caught that as well about making rat racks. Also though males are in breeding mode mine is going ape looking for a girl right now. Breeding and feeding dangerous times. Always be mindful. And yes we have a city ordinance forbidding pit bulls in city limits about 20 miles from my home.

Unfortunately because of the Lacey Act, you can't ship them or move them across state lines. Since he lives in Oklahoma and you live in Ohio, you're only option would be to transport it yourselves, and since it's a felony if you're caught I wouldn't risk it. :O

Retics aren't part of the Lacey Act. "Just" burms, african rock pythons, and yellow anacondas.

Yeah, xf - Retics did not make the list thank goodness! I've had retics shipped from all over the US in the last couple of months :-) If they get added to the list, we is in trouble . . .
