reptile forums and herpcenter

First off if the mods find this to be advertising another site and want to delete my post, I apologize and by all means do so.

Do any of you go to either of these two forums? (reptileforums.com herpcenter.net)

It looks like the mods from reptile forums made their own site secretly (herpcenter), then posted on the message boards at reptile forums that the site was closing down and the new site was herpcenter. The man that created herpcenter also used tools from the owner of reptile forums to create his site. His site is almost the exact same format of reptile forums as well.
I thought it was a pretty unethical thing to do...
what are your thoughts?

its sneaky and i would never do such a thing but maybe they did it for a good reason even so they don't need to trick people they can just tell them there objection.

I agree with DP - it is silly, and very deceptive what's the harm in telling the truth? If what you are doing is truely correct others will see it and respond accordingly, why lie unless truth hinders?

I was a member of reptile forums at one point then a mod on there decided he was king thats all she wrote and I left. Good info on that site though. As for the other one have no clue on that one. But it is kinda messed up stealing someones site idea.

Damn, I'd be so ripped if I were the owner.

By the way, I'll kill all my mods if they try to over throw the Godfather :P

I guess you really got it coming to you when your mods get so pissed at you that they decide to make a site without you.

Yeah.....Godfather rules with such an iron fist around here that we wouldn't DREAM of trying to get out and make it on our own! I have no desire to try on the latest fashionable cement boots.... (Godfather may be cruel and ruthless...but he's not stingy! He would never kill us with last year's fashions!) :wink: :P

I've never visited either of those sites, so I have no idea what's gone on. Seems like a pretty crummy thing to do, though. I wouldn't follow someone that sneaky and conniving, even if I didn't like what was going on at the original forum. I'd move on and look for a place like......here! :D

From what I've heard so far, the owner was being a total nincompoop and disrespectful of members. So the question is, should the mods have turned the other cheek instead of screwing him over. My theory in life is, what goes around comes around. Nothing good ever comes out of situations like this!

Raj I totally agree with you on this one... karma dude - it can bite you in the butt, or get you help on the highway. What goes around most certainly does come around .... but for some people it takes too long to come around... I think most of us know those people, and many may have worked for them. :)

Seriously...if the owner was being such a jerk, and it wasn't an isolated occassion due to some stress in his "real life"...then the mods have every right to leave if they've done all the can to right the situation. And if they've the means, then they also have a right to start a new forum so their community can stay together...and let's face it folks, we ARE a community. We enjoy each other's company and learn much from one another. I for one would not like to lose it.

All that being said...to make a near identical forum and then to say falsely that the old forum is closing and re-opening as the new one...that's just wrong. And as you say, Raj...what goes around comes around. If they cannot act honorably in this, then I would not trust them to act honorably later, when new conflicts arise. And conflicts will come...because they always do when people gather together in any numbers greater than one.

It may appear that "good" has come of it in the short run...but I seriously doubt that the new forum will last long if it is built on such a foundation.

Just my overly philosophical two cents. :?

to each his own, if they wanted to make a new forum more power to em, but the way they went about it was wrong I think.
You shouldnt step on others just to get your site up and going ya know?

I design the site to work great under many resolutions. And to work quickly for dialup users. Image heavy complex sites don't make a good site. IMO let form meet function. Do I really need snazzy looking 50kb block headers that'll make the site slow and deplete my bandwdith, naw.

I get so much praise for my color selection and how over all user friendly the site is. I doubt I'll ever use an image heavy layout again.

Well, back to herpcenter.com, based on how they got started, I doubt I'll ever join. You got some bad sites out there, sites with some bad people and a bad community. Based on how this site started, sounds like it's got a pretty dark future.
