What are your TOP 3 BIGGEST ONLINE PET PEEVES?
-
internet tough guys and religious banter, especially those who feel it is alright to tell someone what they believe so they can tell them they are wrong (straw man, false equalities, other fallacious arguments)
-
Rude people.

Misspelling/grammar
noobs that don't read a bit before asking basic questions
and double posts lol

Re: What are your TOP 3 BIGGEST ONLINE PET PEEVES?
Rude people.
Shortening of words, messing up grammar
People coming to a forum to ask questions they could easily google the answer to
-
Religous and political debates (or debates of any kind) where one/both/all parties involved refuse to entertain another perspective on a given topic.
Text speak in forum posts and electronic communications. Bad grammar/punctuation/spelling or a total lack thereof.
ABUSE OF THE CAPS LOCK KEY
-
I have a lot of pet peeves that stem from the internet and how people behave. I guess the top three would be:
1.) Short hand - it's fine for texting I guess, but I don't want to have decipher what people are saying
2.) People who forget/deliberately decide to act rude because they aren't talking face to face with someone.
3.) Odd use of capitalization - there is a time and place for capitalization and people tend to overuse it.

I was going to write my normal lengthy response, but honestly I couldn't have said it better than this. The only thing I would add to it, because limiting my pet peeves of the internet to three is just inconceivable, is writing format.
Paragraph breaks, bullet points, etc are your friend and mine. Reading a wall of text is not only irritating, but painful.

How about you stop posting random crap and just participate in the myriad of useful discussions already going on. It's evident at this point (to everyone here) that you are trying way to hard now to make up for any past transgressions. If you don't let it die then it won't die, but if you do, it will.

This, but more extreme. There is no instance in anything where I feel short hand or text talk is okay when conversing either in person or over technology with anyone. For me, it is rude (you can't take the time to type crap out?) because you don't really care about the conversation and it is lazy because someone using it is so uneducated that they have to do it (Who needs grammar when you have swag, right?).
I also have a big problem with over punctuation. I was at my doc's office yesterday and they had a sign, literally that was like this (In all caps, but I'll take 'em off):
Please turn
Your cell phone
off please..
Thank you!!!!!
I almost flipped out. One, the ellipse was one period too short (instead of one long, like most people use it) and then an unnecessary amount of exclamation points? I wanted to say," You work for a freaking university, there is a writing center not five minutes from here I'm sure they can help you figure your stuff out".
I just make a point to be as professional as possible when conversing orally or through text. For me, it's a general stick of intelligence. And, more often than not, I type the way I speak. So, being from the south, we have y'all and 'em and what not but that is just culture for me. :)

Haha, yes! Though I will admit I am at fault for over using the ellipse. On occasion I will use more than one exclamation point, not usually more than two, but I'm sure I've done it in the past.
Something else that bothers me with the current facebook era, is the doubling or tripling of letters. For example "omgggg did you see thattt? Like reallyyy?"
There ain't nothin' wrong with a little southern dialect ;) I use "y'all" a good bit. Also I have a tendency to use the apostrophe in place of the "g" often. Like in "nothin'" etc.
-
I guess I don't have any Internet pet peeves. Not nearly as bad as some anyway. I don't take anything seriously enough in a make beleive world to even think about such things. Reading this thread is a little scary!
I guess my Internet pet peeve would be people that have Internet pet peeves! :D
-
1. Giant blocks of unformatted text without punctuation or proper capitalization
2. Texting short hand. Some things are ok like lol, but condensing words into a single letter (like you = u) drives me nuts honestly most phones out there today have full keyboards which really makes texting shorthand just lazy.
3. People who don't read a post that clearly answers their question then ask the same question again directly under the post that answers said question.
-
Re: What are your TOP 3 BIGGEST ONLINE PET PEEVES?
I really don't mean to be, but in my head I'm an uber grammar/ spelling nazi. Too/ to, their/ they're/ there, ect. Every time I see words misspelled I like mentally deduct a point from them, I reeeeeeally don't mean to, it just happens lol. I am fully aware I do make mistakes too.
Much worse would be really aggressive/ arrogant/ ignorant people who will not listen to advice even if they asked for it.
-
1. Rudeness
2. Grammar nazi's
3. People who refuse to do research on their own before asking questions.
-
Re: What are your TOP 3 BIGGEST ONLINE PET PEEVES?
I have abused the ellipsis far too many times. I'll keep that in mind while posting here. I may have used it inappropriately as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellipsis
Anyways, my online pet peeves:
1) Trolls. It is very annoying especially when you're brand new to something. Example? Of course I'm going to suck in my first game of League of Legends. Yet, I was trolled so hard! :/
2) People on Facebook who have albums of JUST themselves possibly titled "Me!<3333"
3) On Twitter, tweets that count down the number of hours left of work. In other words, "1 down 11 to go!", "2 down 10 to go!", "3 down 9 to go!" ... etc.

This isnt a clique. This is an online forum with a close knit friendly/family like atmosphere. Were very welcoming and love new friends. But when someone comes in and starts pissing everywhere and annoys my online friends it upsets everyone.
Im not trying to act tough online. This is 100% me in real life too. Stop by my house anytime and ill give you a live demonstration.
Its ok, i dont particularly care for you either.
-
I have to agree with mike 100%, you come to a forum where people are like a family, start problems and wonder why people want you gone:confusd:, to be honest when i see your user name on a post i dont even click it(except this one), because its like dealing with a hs girl. And thank god i love this forum because to put you in your place is not worth risking not being able to be on this forum anymore.
-
People there is an ignore button for a reason. If you don't like or get annoyed by someones post just click it and be done. This is only making things worse.

But see you can't go and make posts like that and expect people to just move on, retaliatory actions only bring more retaliatory posts. It is a never ending circle that just needs to stop.

Thing is..Now whenever I post anything..people will come in with slick comments. Why? It's 28k people on here and It's impossible 1 person like myself can get people upset and I really didn't do anything. Am I suppose to just let people talk to me anyway on an open forum and not reply back?

Look, the only way you are going to dig your way out of this is to just let things go. Break the cycle. I guarantee that if you just let things settle down, put a little more thought into your posts/threads that within a week everything will be fine. Most people who are commenting negatively on your posts are just trolling. This website generally speaking is very forgiving. I'm not saying that you shouldn't defend yourself when necessary but rather to chose your battles more carefully.
The reason why is because you are making it too much fun for them...
If you have serious questions and they are asked in a dignified manner I guarantee that will get answered. I've replied to a few of your threads with good information others have too.
This thread is a perfect example of what I am talking about. If all of your threads where like this there wouldn't be any issues.

Ok, one last thing, then I'm done.
This isn't an "online clique". It's a group of people that come here because we all share a love for bps/herps/snakes, etc. We come here and we share experiences, info, pictures of beautiful snakes. New people and friends are welcome, how do you think we all got here?? Everybody started somewhere. What isn't welcomed with open arms are trollish, and rude people.

cool..so where did I go wrong? Can you lead me to the post that actually got people upset?

I dislike any (FB) post that tells me to "like" or "share".
Also getting to know a large group of people at once is kind of intimidating so second guessing everything I type is kind of a pet peeve.

I doubt that there was a single post, but rather a few that built into this. Your thread on live feeding and the thread about how sensitive this site is are most likely the main contenders.
You have to understand that this hobby is constantly under fire, because of this some people have a very low tolerance for things like live feeding videos. (I don't want to get into that debate, I'm just trying to help you understand how you got here) The content of the live feeding video thread itself wasn't that bad, It really was just worded poorly then interpreted in an even worse way by some. BOTH sides share the blame for this. Once the fire gets lit it doesn't take much for it to get out of control. Your thread about how sensitive this site is, is really what caused you issues. Some people were already angered/upset/mad/whatever and a thread like that can very easily be seen as a direct/personal attack. I'm not saying that you intended it that way, but that it can be perceived that way. People started responding, then you would retaliate, and thus the cycle was born. It got worse and worse until an admin had to close the thread. Some members stepped way out of line in my opinion, but you kept feeding the flames as well. Once again in situations like these there isn't any single person to blame, but rather many. Once the fire is lit is is very hard to extinguish.
As i said before lay low this will blow over. If you have any questions that you need answered try using the sites search function, then google. If you can't find a answer then you have 2 choices. Start a new thread, or send someone like me a PM. Either way write the post as if it was a school assignment, good grammar and well thought out sentences will go a long way to having people want to help you. People on this site will bend over backwards to help people I've seen it time and time agin.

1/ People who get an attitude are being rude because they ask questions and get answers they do not like.
2/ People who complain about warnings / infractions / reputation points....in other words people who cannot take responsibility for what they say or do.
3/ Trolls and spammers
Surely no one around here fits that profile

Ok you guys I'm kind of out of touch, what is a troll? (other than the wikipedia definition please) since one of my real life pet peeves is a shrinking vocabulary

Copied from Urban Dictionary (bleh, not my favorite website, but it gets the job done for internet slang)
|
troll |
3024 up, 801 down |
|
1a. Noun
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.
1b. Noun
A person who, on a message forum of some type, attacks and flames other members of the forum for any of a number of reasons such as rank, previous disagreements, sex, status, ect.
A troll usually flames threads without staying on topic, unlike a "Flamer" who flames a thread because he/she disagrees with the content of the thread.
1c. Noun
A member of an internet forum who continually harangues and harasses others. Someone with nothing worthwhile to add to a certain conversation, but rather continually threadjacks or changes the subject, as well as thinks every member of the forum is talking about them and only them. Trolls often go by multiple names to circumvent getting banned.

Here's an oldie but goodie on the care and feeding of trolls:

1. Tolls
2. People who ask what snakes to buy and breed
3. And last people who ask how much a snake will sell for if they make one. Key question I hate most "what could I breed to make the most profitable babies?"
And then they deny getting into the hobby for the cash....which hardly happens.

I was going to play this game but instead I just decided to hand out a bunch of "thanks" to those that have already posted what peeves me;)
I didnt even want to go through the last 5 pages but there are those that deserved it:gj:
I do know the staff here tries to be fair to everyone as Mr Brute would have been booted off of LSRS after the warning rant.
Son you really need to learn to read the responses to your posts, use the search function, and respect the veterans of this site.
Dont be scared of those that act tough online, worry about the ones that you will eventually meet and remember your alligator mouth;)
