Hey all! As I was picking up some food at Petco this afternoon, I got into a conversation with another customer (okay, I actually talked to several, but this isn't about them).

To make a long story short, he has two Colombian red-tailed boas that he needs to find new homes for. He's had them a couple of years and there's a 7' female who's just finished her winter fast and a 5' male who's never fasted. He wasn't asking any money for them, but would like to find them homes with someone experienced with snakes and prepared to care for them.

Neither he nor I are able to ship animals this big, so they'd have to be picked up, but i would be willing to drive a few hours to meet up with one of you to get them to a good home. I gave him my business card and told him I'd look into whether I could find homes for them and he's going to call me to find out. So, is anyone interested in one or both of these? Not to be picky, but I won't help anyone under 18 to get these.

    Who deleted my post!
What are their temperaments like and how much does he want for the male?

    Saving for a vision
According to him, they both have great temperaments and the male is, he said, anerythistic. They eat rats and the male has never skipped a meal. He didn't ask for money, but I think it would be the right thing to do to give him some ($50?), especially if he includes their tanks. If you or anyone else are interested and willing to pick up within a reasonable radius of Atlanta, post your questions here and I will ask him when he calls.

Hey Marla, I just cleaned out one whole room for reptiles and I might be interested. How big are the tanks? Do you know?

If Freak takes the male, I might be interested in the Female. Just depends if I can take off work and swing by Atlanta one weekend!

I have room as well. Ice, you did call the male first, But I really don't want a female to be honest. So it would be your call.

Marla, i could make it out there any day this week starting on tuesday.

That sounds like a great plan. So it sounds like if he includes the tanks and stuff then the two of you would each be willing to take one? I will ask him about the stuff. I could keep them in the house for a week or something if needed but I can't take these guys in myself.

Yes, he is giving them away because his wife's sister is moving in with them and absolutely won't be in the same house with the snakes. He tried suggesting she just stay out of the room with them, but apparently they freak her out too much.

Justin and Raj, I just got off the phone with Donald. He is pleased that I was able to find good homes for his red-tails. Seth, the male, just shed yesterday. Both have been eating live rats under supervision. He is including the enclosures for each of them. Please post here or PM me so we can set up for you to come and get the snakes. You will need a pickup or van or something to take the enclosure home with you.

I'm sorry, Justin, I left work right after posting this and now I'm home and seeing your post. I left Donald's phone number at work because I didn't expect you to be able to come so soon. He has to work until 4 tomorrow and won't be home until 4:30 or so. I have to get my younger daughter back tomorrow evening then deliver a cat to my mother's and visit with her for a bit, so tomorrow when he's available really doesn't work for me and I think he'd be more comfortable if I were along to make introductions, etc. Does Friday afternoon after 4:30 or Saturday afternoon work for you?

Raj, neither Donald nor I am prepared to ship her to you and I'm afraid what might happen to her if we tried. Could you come up this weekend? Or next?

Marla I have a Car :( I don't think anyone will let me borrow their truck for such a long trip. If I come down next weekend I will be picking up the snake and not the enclosure. I will set something on my own in the room. Have you seen the snakes personally? Do you know if they eat F/T? I just have a whole bunch of Q's. I will post more later. Now off to work!

I have the wierdest tank in the world!
Raj, just a thought, but for a free snake and enclosure it might be worth it to spend $20 on a UHaul. If not, you can take the snake and I'll take the enclosure -- deal? I have not seen the snakes personally, but will be seeing them Saturday when Justin comes to pick up the male. They are not eating f/t but have been fed live under supervision. I'd certainly try to switch them, but not for the first meal for the female since she just broke her seasonal fast. If you can come down next weekend, please let me know ASAP so that I can let Donald know to plan accordingly, preferably when I call him to let him know he will be seeing Justin and me Saturday afternoon.

I will be leaving around 0930-1000 and will be there around 1200-1230 depending on traffic and if I dont' get lost. lol

LOL. I hope you don't, and you can certainly call me if it looks like you're getting lost.

Here's the issue. Should I drive 13hours and spend well over a 100 dollars in gas and food and a possible stay over when I can get a BCI localy for 70 bucks? I will be honest Marla. I'm not too thrilled with the fact that they've been fed live jumbo rats! Even though closely supervised, all it takes is that one time to do some serious damage. One will not be quick enough to prevent that. But of course you know this much better than I do. I've thought about this a lot and the largest snake of any kind I can house is probabaly five to six feet. This is cause I live alone and do not want to handle a Large Femal by myself. Given they are legless puppy dogs, all it would take is a SFE on my part  What I'm trying to say is, I hate driving!

Raj, you certainly don't have to take her, but I wish you'd said something to begin with when I mentioned at the beginning that these snakes would have to be picked up in this area. I understand your concerns and would rather you backed out now than later, but it does still put me without a home for her.

If anyone else on the forum is interested in taking custody of a female Colombian red-tail that must be picked up in Atlanta or within a reasonable driving distance, please let me know ASAP.

Justin, I understand that. Maybe you could ask around, though, and see if you have a herp-knowledgeable friend who would be interested in her? Then breeding would still be an option for you.

Rusty, thanks. If I can't help Donald find a good home for her, I will definitely mention them.

OK, and if you don't take her Will is considering it I think. But he wants me to see her first, make sure she's got a good temperament.

So everyone, i am back from my trip to atlanta. I did end up taking both of the bcis, the female and male and they are now settling in. I will get pics as soon possible for you all. Thanks again marla, I really appreciate you taking your time today to help me. I haven't thought of any names because i don't think they had any before. if they did, i wasn't informed of them. So any ideas?

The male was called Seth, but Donald never mentioned the female's name. I definitely want to see what she looks like after her shed. Her iridescence was neat. I take it you made it home safe and sound? I was glad to see you caught that lane to get onto the highway, because it can be difficult getting let in there. What did your wife have to say once she saw them? I hope Seth will stay out of her purse. :)

Raj! No more pizza close to bedtime for you! The snakes were fine and didn't bite anyone, even with both my girls holding the male. The female was a bit thin (she'd been a rescue case before Donald got her) and shyer than the male, and the male had a few very small pieces of retained shed on his body, but they were just fine. And I am sure Justin is going to provide a fine home for them and you don't need to feel guilty. You made a difficult choice, but the one you needed to make and there is nothing wrong with that.
