29gal tank, astroturf, 2 heat lamps, only 1 is on tho, hide on each end, bamboo stick goin diagnolly thru tha tank, water bowl is on cooler end, screen top, half is covered with a damp towel (would paper towel work better?)
-
I found that contact paper is a great way to cover a screen top to retain humidity. When I used towels to cover the screen lids, they always dried out overnight. I'd recommend using contact paper and taping it down securely to trap that humidity in!
-
Yes...get the screen covered with contact paper or duct-tape except just a bit open for some ventilation and/or a light. You can put the waterbowl under your heatsource, but you'll have to check it daily to make sure it doesn't dry out. Mist the cage with a clean squirt bottle filled with clean water.
If none of this helps, or you need the humidity raised right now but can't get that screen covered for some reason, then you can also provide a humid hide for the snake to retreat to. Put a damp sponge inside a hide on the warm side of the tank.
Hopefully these things will help you to have a smooth shed without having to resort to soaking.

my humidity has raised a fair deal. its at 65% now im keepn a damp towel on top, along with a water bowl under each light on each side of the tank
-
THis is a good thing Rex but if you have heated lighting on both sides of the tank, be certain that his cool side does not get too warm! It is still important for your little man to have a good variety of temps to work with!

Have you thought about misting? I have a moist towel on top with a similar humidity level when I don't mist. I misted a couple of times a day once I saw Ellis' eyes get cloudy, and the shed went well.
Interestingly, my humidity level has been much higher with a wet towel than plastic.

I hafta say that the whole duct tape thing did not work for me at all. I have been using a towel, a dry one no less, & it has worked far better!!!

Which is why it's great to get so many different inputs on the same issue. Different things work differently for different people! :D

When i notice that jojo is going through a shed cycle I put him in a Sterilite box filled with about an inch of warm water not hot but warm. Basicly if you feel that its too hot it probibly is. I put him in there with a climbing vine so he dont have to be in the water if he dont want to. But the humidity gets really high and condensation starts forming on sides and top. This is also a great time to rehydrate your snake I put about half a cup of pedialyte in with the water and he drinks all he can. I keep him in there for about 30 minutes and within 36 hours he makes a complete shed.
-
Pedialyte in the water huh? Wow, I never thought of that. It works out nicely? What do others think of this idea??
-
great way to get your snake electrolytes and re hydrate... don't know how it would help much with a shed, but if your snake is dehydrated I've read that it is the thing to do. (besides seeing a vet)
-
my humidity 80%! ive been workn hard 2 get it ther and it finally is!! yay for me! hopefully the shed goes well
-
Excellent! Keep it there for a couple of days and you should be good to go.

I've heard of people putting pedialyte (or even Gatoraide!) in the water that they soak in. I would only do that if the snake was truly dehydrated though...not just for a routine soak. While I haven't heard any stories of it harming the snake (although some say the Gatoraide will stain) we can't be sure there isn't some risk that we don't know about. I would only use it when the benefits outweigh the unknown risks.

When Jojo goes into a shed cycle he will drink less water I dont know why but even if he isnt dehydrated he still seems to enjoy having a drink while he is in there. Plus the high humidity helps start the shedding. And its pretty cool to see them drink. He especialy likes it when i change his water to put fresh water he comes out of his hide and waits till i put it down then he will start drinking. I have read that its very important to make sure that they get a complete shed so i do the soaking thing and it works every time.
