What's your favorite era of music?
Mine is, the 90's, more specifically the early to mid-90's. Without going into too much detail, it was just an exciting time to grow up, with tons of good music. Rock was awesome(we're including grunge/alternative), new life was breathed back into punk, the rap scene exploded, rap/rock was formed, etc, etc... It was just a great time. Since 2000, there's just not a whole lot I've been impressed with, and honestly have found rap to be the most tolerable over the past 12 years. I don't do country, so I don't know anything about it.
Second favorite...the 60's.
So, what's your favorite era of music? A little reasoning behind it is more than appreciated.

Mine is the late 80s to early 90s. All of my favorite bands were created then. Megadeth, slayer, anthrax, etc. Heavy metal was being transformed into heavier metal, black denim jeans were socially acceptable to wear and long hair on a man was tough! What more can you ask for?

I think awesome music is created everyday. And secondly I think now has some amazing music coming out because you don't need to buy a whole album any more for just the one song you like. Therefor bands need to make sure that all the songs on the album are good so its worth buying. You really don't need to buy songs anymore at all. I think bands need to step their game up every time they make something new to keep people buying instead of just downloading.

I agree with you about good music being created everyday. I was born in 63 and could not pick a single era, as too much great music would be eliminated. Should I lose the Beatles because I choose The Smiths? Should Gotye be discarded for XTC? Where do you put Radiohead?
I disagree about being able to pick just specific songs. When I used to buy albums, cd's, etc, I always found gems that I would have never heard if they weren't included in the compilation, because the "radio industry machine" didn't find them worthy of air time. They were the kind of songs you had to hear a couple times and they would grow on you. But some are my favorites now. It's just like photography today. Because everything is digital, everyone just deletes those pictures that aren't exactly what you want. In the days of film, you had it developed and got what you shot. Sometimes they were garbage, and sometimes you caught something you hadn't expected that was precious.
You talk about them stepping up their game, but all you are going to eventually get is the songs that some test group has sampled. They will say, "Yes, that will sell", and that is what will get released. If you don't think so start investigating how many movies are shot with multiple endings and then released based on which ending a test group says appeals to them better. "What if the test group isn't at all representative of what you find appealing? If you appreciate a band, then listen to the band and give everything they put out a real chance. You may be surprised.

I suppose that's true. I still do think bands have to work harder nowadays to make enough cash to survive. I heard something on the radio a while ago that Metallica has to play shows now because the album sales aren't enough to fund their expensive lives. I like everything from Katy perry to lamb of god. Their is good music everywhere. I dislike when people only listen to one genre because its "cool" or it goes with their image. If I hear a song and I like it, I will listen to it more. Like right now I can't get enough of gangnam style by PSY. If you haven't heard it, look it up. So good and so very addicting.

I like alot of rock and metal so itd be hard to peg down one "era" of music. I listen to alot of modern metal too, i appreciate both equally and love to think about how its evolved through the decades. I like sabbath just as much as i like slayer and theyre from 2 completely different eras. I cant pick just one lol!

Re: What's your favorite era of music?
The 80's and early 90's is when my favorite time of music came to be. I am kind of stuck in these two eras.
-
I agree with some of the above posters. If I like it I'll listen to it. It's really hard to pick an era. They each have their own flare! There are times when I'm in a certain mood and specifically pick some genre though.
When I feel like being all romantic I listen to 80s music hahaha. You know like 16 Candles/Breakfast Club type music. LOL.
When I feel like alternative/punky, I throwback to the 90s/early 2000s. Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Nirvana, No Doubt, Incubus etc.
When I'm coding, it's all house/trance music. Deadmau5, Daft Punk, etc.
And then there's random K-Pop like 2NE1 haha.
So hard to pick an era!

Re: What's your favorite era of music?
it's so hard to pick one era. i'm a huge fan of old 40s, 50s 60s blues....actually all blues from the 20s thru today, i LOVE grunge(pearl jam is my fav band ever, well, fav band not called led zeppelin), 60s garage rock, 70s rock(led zeppelin is the most important band of all time) 80s butt rock, newer garage/punk blues(white stripes, black keys style stuff).....its too hard to pick one era. i can tell what era is the worst though, just turn on MTV or any top 40 channel on FM radio.......
-
Probably 70s For me. the rock and folk type stuff going on was incredible. Led zeppelin, Tom petty, fleetwood Mac, John Denver, Dolly Parton, james taylor, jackson browne, the eagles, so much good stuff.
-
It depends what day of the week it is for me. Overall I can listen to just about anything. If I had to pick one over the others I'd probably go with late 60s thru the 70s.
-
I'm probably older than most of you but I like the 50's, 60's and 70's.

THIS lol you listed three of my favorite bands!
I got to see megadeth live for my first concert ever!

I agree with interloc "great music is created everyday". I was born in the 70s but I was raised on 50s and 60s music and now I listen to everything from Josh Groban to Ozzy Osbourne. You even see influences of music from the 50s and 60s in some current artists such as Bruno Mars and the late Amy Winehouse. I still listen to certain disco songs and love my 80s music and my 90s boy bands.

I'm slightly all over the map these days, but I couldn't agree with you more. honestly if someone had showed me your above post without context, I would have sworn on my life I'd written it and forgotten. the 90s really seem like the last era to have a galvanizing, original take on music. hell mike mccready remains the reason I play guitar to this day. slash, who also happens to be a reptile fanatic, is right up there as well.

doesn't matter what time period it came from, as long as i enjoy it. not very picky. i will say though, when I'm in my truck alone i usually listen to newer metal, '05+. whitechapel, suicide silence, as i lay dying, the devil wears prada. but i love anything from zeppelin to RJD2 and pretty lights to the black keys. i won't be one of those people that say they listen to everything, because i don't. country for the majority- no. but i do listen to a wide variety of music. lol
-
1700s-1870s AND the '80s. Nuff' said. Specifically 1986, which was a year full of aggressive Thrash-Metal :D
-
I don't really listen to music with lyrics these days. However, I had a rather large J-pop fad in high school.
My favorite music era is the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic period.
I've been playing the violin since I was 4 years old, so I'm a little biased.
I'm currently listening to film scores.
-
I have to say this because its the Internet and I can lol. I don't get the appeal of country music at all. It's probably because I was born and raised in cities. Nothing about the genre appeals to me. Other than every girl looks Hawt in a cowgirl hat. Lol. The twang, the southern drawl, the look and don't even get me started on the lyrics. And I just want to say, I have many friends who like it, so I don't shy away from people just because they like it. I just have no time for it. I feel like some peeps will disagree with this but everyone is entitled to an opinion.

It honestly depends on my mood/ what I'm doing:
20s-40s - when I'm brainstorming, driving or trying to relax (main thing I listen to)
60s underground music when I feel like being a bit weird
Early 90s for the nostalgia (pretty rarely now adays)
00+ electronica when I'm doing something that requires full concentration
The thing about trying to peg an era of music that you like is the simple fact that after said era (say the 40s), that type of music is still seen throughout the rest of the decades. For instance, there's a newer band call Pokey LaFarge and the South City Trio that I am currently in love with that have a very 20s-40s feel, but I can't lump them in with the 20s-40s because they are in fact a very current band. It's just kind of hard to peg a favorite era of music when a) you like a bunch of different kinds of music, and b) eras consistently copy from past eras and are inspired by them and not only that, but continue through them.
