You can use that if you want, but you will keep battling mites until you get provent a mite. Do yourself a favor and skip the reptile relief. PAM is the way to go.

What happens is that the mites leave the animal at night to lay their egg's, So Pam kills the mites as they leave the animal to lay their egg's and it kills the eggs as well. The reason people have such a hard time with mites is that they kill the mites they see and don't treat the eggs and the new mites hatching.. Get P-A-M and get them for good.

When I recommended reptile spray it was intended as a preventative measure (mites were suspected but none had been found yet). I feel that PAM is too dangerous to use as a preventative measure but once mites have been confirmed it is time to pull out the big guns and wipe them all out as quickly as possible.

As a preventative measure reptile spray works good enough and poses very little risk to the animal, but PAM is the best choice if there are mites crawling all over your snake. (just follow the directions to the letter)

This may sound weird but I have had success in treating for mites using a combination of treatments. I spray my cages with prevent-a-mite but I also treat my snake to kill the ones on them. To treat the snakes I used olive oil (I assume regular vegetable oil would work too) to coat the snakes. I let it sit for about 15-20 minutes and then wash them off with a little bit of dish soap and water. You need to make sure you get all the oil off because it's bad for the snakes to leave it on. Doing both of these things I've had success on wiping out a mite problem fast. I've had to treat for mites twice now and in both cases I only needed to treat the snakes once and then did a followup cage spray 3-4 weeks later to make sure I got them all.

    Edit:
Once they are gone they usually stay gone unless you bring in another snake that has them.

Ok well I only have 1 snake and plan on only having 1 for awhile.. I will def try that. Did you treat snake when you first treated enclosure or did you wait till like mid way?

Yes he will be fine for a few days. You can soak him in the meantime to help drown the mites that are on him.

How to keep them away for good? PAM.

Until the PAM arrives, I would soak him for 30 minutes in warm water with a drop of Dawn dish detergent. That will get the mites off of him for now. Also, remember when using PAM, spray the container and let completely dry. Once dry, you can add snake. Do not put in a water bowl for at least 2 days as water will eliminate the PAM immediately. After a couple of days you can put in water because the PAM will have had time to set in to the various surfaces of your container. Good luck!

If you ordered it from pro products directly it will take awhile. I just had mites about 2 months ago ordered the PAM and it took 2 weeks..... They took over a week to process my order for just one can. I didnt understand that. Also, due to it being an aresol can it cannot be shipped overnight. It will be ground shipped to you. Just soak your snake or snakes till it gets to you

I treat the snake while the cage is drying. That way I kill the ones that are bugging them and PAM will kill any eggs that got missed in cleaning and kill them after.

Mites can and will travel through the carpet, I would just vacuum and spray some PAM around the cage too when you get it. Mites are a lot easier to get rid of than fleas.

Oh and since he is in shed how can I keep my humidity up in the tank?

Re: 911 i just found a mite in the water bowl
Ya I would say bump the humidity up. Ya mites thrive better in higher humidity but why make the a bad shed add to the problem. Also, if your diligent and can catch the snake actually shedding, take her out and clean entire cage throughly. When the snake sheds all the mites come off with the shed so the sooner the better. (NOT A 100% EFFECTIVE STILL NEE THE PAM) but that will help the problem also.

Also any hides that arent plastic bake at 250 for 30 min to an hour along w water dishes... Mites lay eggs and they get in the crevices. The heat will kill those.

Ok I wil def watch and try to catch him shedding. He is staying in the water bowl so far my humidity is up to like 52% lol how do I bump it up just mist or what? and I can put all the wood in the oven? How do I clean the plastic? Just with the PAM?

The instructions on the can explicitly say to treat the substrate, not the bare cage. Which did you do? Depending on what the "stuff" is, you might want to treat it with PAM as well. His water bowl can go back in the cage once the PAM has aired/dried out.

Everything can go back in.... The can says treat substrate.... My experience is I dump the substrate at 1st sign of mites. I treated just the tub also. Nonill effects you will be fine. I usually wait a few weeks before i put them back on regular substrate. I do this so I can monitor if mites come back alot easier on paper towels.

I don't want to derail this thread too much but how would she have gotten the mites in the first place? I thought mites only come in by new snakes, clothes from expos, and used equipment?
