OK, so he's older and bigger than the rest by a good bit, but he's here. :) The guy who had him couldn't wait til Saturday, so he brought him over after Jessica's play tonight. Here's the new guy for all to see:

He has a little stuck shed by his head:

Here's a shot to show his length by my full arm:

Here's the enclosure he came with (some tweaking required):

And here he is with his new mama:

wow at first I thought you meant the minute maid bottle.... i wondered what kind of housing equipment it would require.. but then i scrolled and saw the snake. Congrats! Looks good and you'll have that tank turned around in no time.

Thanks y'all! I don't know if I'm going to keep him in the tank or not, but I might cuz it's a cool tank.

Nice necklace ya got there Marla! That BP rocks, man cant wait till mine gets that big. Whats his name?
  • 04-01-2004, 12:25 AM
    Marla
Not yet, Raj, but he is supposed to be 46" long. He needs a new name, Paul. The one he came with was Sneaky Poo. Any ideas?

    JLC
*snicker* Sneaky Poo surely won't do! Even Bo Peep would beat him up over that one!

He looks awesome, Marla! You'll have a clean shed in no time and then he'll be just perfect! He's got a happy home now, for sure!

First I need to get this shed finished, and then either pick out a gender-neutral name or get him sexed properly. :)

    Congrats, Marla
Nice looking bp and a lucky one too!
He /she looks like a sweety.
    Good Luck!

Thank ya, Jotay. He is definitely a sweetie, and didn't mind being held by strangers his first night. He was alert and curious from the moment he came in the door.

Thanks, Rusty! He seems to be in great shape, despite a bit of husbandry laziness on his previous owner's part.

    He Has Arived!!!
Bert or Ernie could work friendly right off the bat.... I'm trying to think of friendly names since he seems to be such a friendly outgoing snake - if I think of any I'll certainly let you know... but sneaky poo wouldn't fly especially amongst such names as Sir NAITF (Not Appearing In This Film - because he's hiding a lot... get it! I LOVE that name)

    Marla
    Thanks DR.

Jonah, :D I'm glad you like that name. I guess if I get another one just as "brave" as Sir NAITF, he could be Sir Robin. Before I commit to a name like Bert or Ernie, I'm going to want to know gender for sure. I could go with something like "Lefty," but I think this one has more personality than that. Lots of possibilities!

OK, I'm not gonna get wound up here, because I know it's not a reliable indicator of sex, but the new arrival's tail looks just like the one given as an example of a female's tail in The Ball Python Manual and not at all like the example of a male's tail. If it's a girl, I think I'm going to call it Eve.
  • 04-01-2004, 08:29 PM
    iceman25
You can tell from the tail?
  • 04-01-2004, 09:01 PM
    Marla
Not reliably, no. But in general, females have longer, more slender tails and males have stubbier ones.

My vet told me the other way around :?
  • 04-01-2004, 09:07 PM
    Marla
Oops. I suppose I could scan in the examples from the book if needed, but I'd rather not because it would be a copyright violation. Maybe I could get tail photos for comparison, though.

Maybe my vet is a stupid ninny
  • 04-01-2004, 09:33 PM

LOL I didn't say that. Here, I scanned it in for you.

Sright! In that case my vet could have sexed my BP wrong! https://ball-pythons.net/modules/cop...b_banghead.gif

Didn't he use probes? They are the only consistently reliable way to determine sex, and even they aren't perfect depending on experience of user and the snake in question.
  • 04-01-2004, 10:00 PM
    iceman25
She didn't use probes, she just looked at her tail end and gauranteed that it was a girl!
  • 04-01-2004, 10:12 PM
    JLC
Ack!!! All the more reason to ditch her as your herp vet. Maybe she's fine with dogs and cats, but she apparently doesn't even know what she doesn't know about snakes!
  • 04-01-2004, 10:15 PM
    iceman25
Yah, I'm gonna take her to a prof at the University to get her correctly sexed.
  • 04-01-2004, 10:41 PM
    Marla
Good plan, Raj, at least if the answer matters to you.
  • 04-01-2004, 11:01 PM
    iceman25
Its just that I would like to get her/him a mate sometime in the future.
  • 04-01-2004, 11:12 PM
    Marla
Then the accuracy of the answer is definitely important and you should have her sexed by someone experienced in doing so, for sure. I hope the prof can give you a definite answer.

Cute snake, Marla! Did you get him for free?
  • 04-02-2004, 09:56 AM
    Marla
Nope, but darn close considering the aquarium and husbandry stuff he came with and the fact that he was delivered to my living room. Shipping him and his stuff would have been considerably more than I paid. :)
