My neighbor is thinking about putting his snake in a rubbermaid container and wants to know which is better glass aquarium or rubbermaid?? what do you guys think?

well, before david jumps in this one (;))... let me say, after housing many snakes in both, rubbermaids are the way to go. cheaper, easier to clean, easier to keep humidity in. simple as that.

as far as asthetics or display the aquarium is the way to go... as far as function, cost, and ease of use I'd go rubbermaid. Rubbermaids keep heat and humidity WAY WAY WAY WAY better than aquariums and are pretty inexpensive... in most cases a good human heat pad, a rubermaid, two hides, a branch of some sort or basking rock, and a water dish.... you're set! for substrate just throw down some newspaper (cheap and easy to change just make sure the ink is dry)
  • 03-30-2004, 09:06 PM
Personally, I prefer rubbermaids. They are cheaper, easier to use, hold humidity better and when you solder/drill airholes in the side you get cross-ventilation.

LOL...you beat me to it Will. :D

    rubbermaid. Thats all im saying
  • 03-30-2004, 09:22 PM
You've said too much already, freak. No you're gonna have to go for a walk on the lake with your new cement shoes.

    Gravel for substrate?
Rubbermaid for all the reasons already stated PLUS, since snakes generaly do not like huge cavernous enclosures that make them feel unsafe, you can give your snake a cage just right for him, and when he outgrows it you dont mind getting a larger one for 10-15 bucks!

Both my rubbermaid enclosures keep a humidity level of 60-67% with simply a water dish inside. 8)

keep in mind, make sure youre getting the right rubbermaid. imitations are usually crappy.

I'll add my voice to the mix and say I agree -- aquaria are great for display, but Rubbermaids are great for simplifying husbandry.
  • 03-30-2004, 10:42 PM
Yeah, and Ball Pythons don't make the best display snakes anyhow.

Seriously though, the health of my sweetie is more important to me. If a rubbermaid can do a better job, then so be it.

The baby BP cries for help as it frets within the clutches of aquarium man.

BP: Plastic man where are youuuu!!

Plastic man arives at the scene and none to soon the helpless BP is drying out by the minute!!

Plastic man: hand over that helpless BP aquarium head, or face the consequences.

Aquarium man: muahahahahaha your no match for my humidity absorbing aquarium ray.

Plastic man lunges forth to strike a mighty blow, when to his dismay he is stopped dead cold by aquarium mans invisible screen top shield...............to be cont...

    lol beaglgod that is fantastic...
fortunately Plastic Man posesses the power of humid mist... transforming himself into water particles to bypass the evil Aquarium mans screen shield - now he just has to avoid the humidity absorbing ray.......

and everyone can bite my head of right about now...
We do not use rubbermaids, except for out crickets and mealworms..lol
we custom build the enclosures, and use aquariums for isolation (depending on species), but I like to be able to set up the most natural environment, so we do not use rack systems or rubbermaids, just my two cents
    Thanks

    ok, help the numnut
Hey Rusty what do you build your enclosures out of? Just curious and yes Im afaraid I will have to continue the Plastic Man vs Aquarium Man story.

Custom built enclosures don't sound too bad either. Except I will build one once I get a house and settle down. Till then, Rubbermaids and Tanks will have to do.

My husband builds them out of everything,, lol
I know he uses different woods, glass, plexi glas, malamite (sp?) and all sorts of materials.
    Works great for us!
    Thanks

I use glass because I like the display value and you can make it more close to natural.
As for temp and humidity problems I haven't had any with my set up
and Ozzy has shed twice now and they have been prefect sheds ( as she keeps fingers crossed) and the Vet said he was a good healthy bp so I see know reason to change except on the point that rubbermaids would be a lot easier to maintain.
No offense to anyone who keeps them in rubbermaids because I fully understand the reasons you do and as long as your bp's are happy and healthy thats all that matters but for me keeping my bp in a rubbermaid would be funny cuz I use them for sweaters and christmas trees :)
As my collection grows I am sure at some point I will go for the 'maid.

just wanted to put a plug in that you can have a good bp set up in a glass tank

You definitely can, jotay. It's really a personal choice...how much money and effort do you want to put into maintaining your habitats? And what is your ultimate goal with them? (AFTER the obvious goal of the health and contentment of our animals!)

Paul....that's hysterical! I can't wait to see more! (See if you can fit in the Sultaness of Synthetics somewhere...just so long as you realize there's nothing synthetic about her body!  )

Go with Jotay almost verbatim - including the inevitability of moving to tupperware at some point. Humidity can be an issue if you use an unmodieifed screen top (uncovered). There is a point at which it gets unfeasible to try and replicate a natural environment for your herp with the factors including finances, maintenance and upkeep time. We don't have any of our snakes in high traffic or high visibility areas which would promote them as "display animals" since showing them off is nowhere on our agenda, but we do enjoy taking care of them.

Rubbermaids are really better for holding in your humidity. but I have also had success with using aquariums and taping a plexiglass lid on them. Never use a screen top! They are bad for humidity holding, and can also injure a snake's nose if he rubs on the top trying to escape.
