Whoa, I thought those were illegal to own? Maybe that's just in Florida, tho. I used to have a MONSTER Indigo living under the concrete slab of our garage in my child hood home. Great lookin snake!

You have to obtain a federal permit for buying one across state lines. In Florida, you have to have a state permit. From what I understand, Florida is pretty stingy with their permits.

Awesome! How big will she get when full grown? How do they defend themselves?
I wonder when someone will find a piebald indigo snake.. coolio

She should get up to around six or seven feet long. They have very powerful jaws that do not unhinge. Though, I've not heard of them biting for defense. I think their best defense is to slither away.

Unhinging jaws are an old wives' tale, the lower jaw is connected in front by a ligament that stretches. :D

    - - - Updated - - -

Some snakes just aren't as stretchy as others. Might could have something to do with more strongly developed jaw muscles for overpowering their prey or maybe they've just evolved closer towards their preferred prey items to the point where they're more tightly niched.

Very awesome!! Indigos are are my own wishlist - working on the permit in the spring! Yours is a red-throat isn't she? Totally amazing snakes............ :gj:
  • 10-06-2012, 06:00 PM
    Don
Yes, she is a red throat. I like them better than the blacks because their eyes show up better and you can see where they are looking. As much patience as breeding ball pythons has taught me, I'm still having a hard time just leaving her alone so she can acclimate. I want to play with her, but will wait until she is eating. I can't wait until she starts eating and getting bigger.

My wife and I do educational sessions at the local middle school, where we cover a lot of the topics that are covered through the year (genetics, prey/predator, conservation, etc.). We are very excited to introduce the next 300 students we teach to North America's largest and coolest snake. Hopefully, she will help educate some kids that there are some really cool reptiles out there and we all need to do what we can to preserve them.

A female can get from 800 to 1000 grams in their first year. Looking at my records it looks like the mean first year weight is about 804 grams.

By the 2nd year my females average about 1700 grams.

By year four, it's not uncommon for them to break 3000 grams. I usually do not let the females breed until the fourth year.

I was running a few weeks behind you, but mine finally came in today. I didn't want to keep them out any longer than necessary, so these are the best shots I'll have until they have settled in and taken a few meals.

I've bothered Don and Skip enough already during this whole process, so I figured I'd tack on to this thread rather than create my own. Very much worth the wait.

Beautiful! Glad they got there healthy and well. I love the way they peek out of their hides. Mine seems very curious and is always poking out and looking around. They are really cool animals.

these guys are quick, so I haven't been able to get a decent picture yet. however, I did like this pseudo impression of a cobra and thought it might be worth posting.
