1st BP and her eye's have clouded over?
I think my daughter's BP 'Avalon' is getting ready to shed.. We fed her two days ago and picked her up out of her hide and her eyes are all cloudy.. We just want to check and make sure we have this straight as what to do for her... We misted the whole tank and her, last time we did this it raised the humidity quite a bit and it stayed there at least a full day.. We also have some of that Sphagnum moss we put a moistened layer under her cool side hide.. Should we do the warm also? Should we put a lot in there or just the floor?

    Thanks
We also misted her, I think she like this? It makes her flinch at first but then she sorta raises her head up towards it? Hope it isn't pissing her off...

All you need to do is keep the humidity between 60% - 80% and leave the snake alone for about a week.

They generally don't appreciate being misted.

I typically bump my humidity in the bin up after their eyes clear.I would mist around her warm spot once her eyes have cleared back, after her eyes clear up it should not be long until she sheds. Heat + water=humidity, Cool + water= damp.

I figured not, but I've read about people soaking them when they are having a bad shed.. I figured it wouldn't hurt much

Yep, sounds like she's going into shed. No need to spray her directly, just bump the humidity in the enclosure. It will still be several days before she sheds and she will likely be a little grumpy. Let us know how her shed goes!

OK, we're hoping for a nice easy one. We have only had her for a month now and so far we have been lucky. She has eaten every week like a champ and has calmed down.. No more roaming the tank, she quit that about 2 weeks ago.. We were actually going to try to start holding her daily this week also.. Figures! haha. Looks like that'll start next week now.

Wow... I just checked the humidity in her tank from the last misting... I might have over-done it that time... 99% ..... Shouldn't it be raining in there or something? haha:banana:

If it was 99% there would be a lot of condensation in her tank on the glass.

What are you using to measure humidity?

Oh..There is and on all four sides and the plexi-glass top... Using digital Acu-rite therm/hygro from Walmart.. setting right in her tank, just to monitor it while she sheds

You know, I had one that did that one time, I think a little water got on the inside which caused the readings to get all screwy because haven't had a need to mist at all. That being said I took it out and let it sit for a day and now it is reading what the rooms humidity is.

Yeah, I just checked the tank again, same 99%. So I wiped down the glass condensation and moved the thermometer of to the warm side of the hide.. You can see a line in the cypress mulch were the heat lamp is drying out the warm side.. It follows the way the plexiglass covers 2/3 of her tank.

The hygrometer reading 99% isn't a problem. Check the substrate... is it soggy or just a little moist? Soggy or pools is bad, a little moist is fine. It's fine to leave the water on the glass sides, actually it's better if you do. The water will evaporate off the glass and keep the enclosure humid and since the snake doesn't sit on the walls all day it doesn't pose any risk to have the water pooled there. Just make sure it isn't pooled on the bottom where the snake is.

It's almost always 5 days after the cloudy eyes that they shed. Good luck!

Sounds for sure that she is in shed. I keep my humidity between 60 and 65% and just let them do the work. Double check your humidity guage to check for accuracy. Otherwise, good luck!

After moving the humidity gauge to the warmer side it now reads 80% .. This has dropped from the 99% this morning.. The substrate is moist on the side that the plexi-glass covers(cool side) and really pretty dry on her warm side.. No pools of water or anything like that on either side. I did have a homemade humidifier hooked up, but when I seen that 99% I turned it off.. Like I said, looks like the humidity is coming down some, I'll watch it and make sure it doesn't drop to low, say below 70% during her shed though.. Ambient temp at close to center of the tank or maybe 2/3 towards warm side is right at 80..

Re: 1st BP and her eye's have clouded over?
Looks like the Humidity is going to stay around 80% for awhile.. I took her plexiglass and screen off to get to he water dish and it dropped to 70% in a matter of say 3-5 minutes, but so did her ambient temp. It went down to 76 degrees in that time also... As soon as I replaced it it climbed back to 80% with a temp of 81 degrees..
Hope this is comfortable for her during her shedding period..?

Re: 1st BP and her eye's have clouded over? UPDATE 10-5 SHED
Woke up this afternoon and turned on Avalon's day light... Looked in her hide and there is a nice clean looking little head sticking out right next to a nice sized ball of skin.. I think it went well for her..
I'll let my daughter check her when she gets home from school in a few hours. I know she has been wanting to keep the skin.:)

awesome. good to hear the shed went well. Usually just mist a couple of days before shed(once you see the cloudy eyes go back to normal) and perfect sheds should be the result, worked for me the last 9 years haha :)
