Is it wrong to express yourself...
Through song or poetry if it affects others around in a negative way?
Just curious of others take on this cause some lyrics I wrote.
-
Who hurt you, my child? You tell mamma who hurt you!
-
I'm inclined to say yes, if it truly offends them, and they can't simply ignore it or remove themselves.
That being said, I don't think that happens very often, and very little offends me personally. I'd like to know more about what you're talking about, if you're willing to share.
-
I think most people need to man up. People are too easily offended by anything that is different than their own opinion these days. I say express yourself. Screw those who can't handle it. If it is such a problem, they can express themselves by not listening to your music.
-
I think that there are lines that shouldn't be crossed, and expression shouldn't be deliberately meant to have a negative impact on others.
-
I'll share more later cause I'm about to go into work but basically my ex and I split up about a month ago after almost 7 years. And the lyrics offend her. And it's more than one song. Most of the songs either blame her or consist of dark topics that I need to get off my chest. None of which I'd ever act on though.
-
I love dark lyrics! Please share! :gj:
-
If they offend her then tell her not to listen or to ignore them or something.
I get offended by stupid people saying stupid stuff and asking stupid questions all the time but i dont get all butthurt over it...
-
I think I understand. A little catharsis goes a long way for me as well. It certainly doesn't sound like something that she can't opt out of, so I think I agree with AK907.

This leads me to believe that you wrote about physically hurting her. If that is the case then that is truly messed up and no you shouldn't make them public. You should go to your nearest shrink and get some help immediately!
If I totally misread that then as long as you are aware there can be consequences for putting that stuff out there then go for it. Think about it this way. Who is going to really want to be with the guy who puts all their dirty laundry out for all to know? Also, don't get caught up in a defamation of character suit.
-
No one is forcing her to listen to it.. If you tired her up in a room and made her listen to the song on repeat than I could understand. If you have things you need to express than I think you have every right to do that, whether you chose to share your experiences or keep them private amongst the two of you, that's your choice. As long as your careful not to get caught in a defamation of character issue, do your lyrics claim anything about her.. like, "Mandy, your a cheating bag, and I hate you for killing our dog. Your a sociopath and a lesbian and you eat old socks for lunch." I think your okay. LOL
-
I also think that people get "offended" to easily. Really, get over it. Grow some tougher skin.

Just because someone has violent thoughts doesn't mean that they should go to a shrink or are "totally messed up".

Luke if that were the case then i should be in a padded room in an asylum. You just gotta have self control. lol especially at work!
Ironically enough didnt somebody have a thread about wanting to hurt people just this past week?
-
having violent thoughts and singing about them are different. I've been into martial arts and sports since I was a kid and i LOVE to fight. Is that messed up? Probably. Is it messed up to write a song about hurting somebody. You are GD right its messed up! Go talk to a professional or better yet, step on the mat with someone. Its fun, a good stress reliever and it's a great way to stay in shape! :D Now go hug someone you little rascal you
by the way, when I said I love to fight I meant on the mat. Just sayin...

I write short stories that are heavy on violence and are fairly graphic with said violence. Writing stories or songs is just another medium to vent. You fight, other people write.

Im a lover not a fighter! :p
hahaha. As raptor said i believe its just another way for people to let everything out. Thats like saying drawing an music arent both forms of art...
EDIT: oh god i loatheeee hugging and touching like that. Nah you can keep your hugs pal.
-
Look, he asked for an opinion. I gave it to him. I didn't ask for one so I don't really care. Write all the stories you want. All I'm saying is if he specifically writes about PHYSICALLY hurting someone he is probably in a bad place and should talk to someone. He can get into a whole lot of trouble if he is threatening her in ANY way. No body wants that. I get that he hurts and is angry but putting into song that he wants to hurt someone is pretty darn (i'll say it again) messed up!
I dont even know that is what he did. If someone wrote anything about hurting me or my family in any way I would get the police involved.
-
Agreed. Keep the hugs. I like my personal space.
Edit: Then go yell at all of the other song writers who've done the exact same thing.
-
They didn't post here and ask for an opinion. ;)
that and I don't really care about them. I care about my bp.netters. He's going to do what he wants. You are going to do what you want and I'm going to go over to Mikey's house and hug the heck out his adorable self! Life's too short...
-
-
They are good for you!

yup! on the mat. It just makes all the crap go away. I can't explain it... I could show you Mike! :taz:
-
I'll come at you like a spider monkey if you attempt any such thing on me Cecil. Hugs are yucky. Fact.
EDIT: how are they good for you? They make me extremely uncomfortable and sometimes evoke anger like was previously discussed^
-
A few years ago I was in Pittsburgh with some friends from college watching a deck hockey game. They get pretty intense. At the end of one of the games two guys got into a fight. I mean a harsh, bloody fight. Nobody was trying to get near them to stop it.
It stayed toe to toe until they both hit the ground at the same time. They sat there sucking wind just glaring at each other. One finally said "Wanna grab a beer?" The other guy just said "Yup." They got up and drank beers in the parking lot laughing it up. Turned out they had been friends since they were kids.
All I'm saying is it is a great way to release the pain without hurting someone that doesn't want to be hurt.
Don't get yourself in trouble. Write it, sing it, paint it....do what you got to do without actually threatening her. I don't know how else to say it.

How are hugs for me? I used to hate them. Now I can't seem to get enough. My two year old taught me how good they can be :)
I just remembered this. A couple weeks ago I was walking into K-Mart and there was a middle aged man who had mental disabilities being trained how to greet people. I walked in and said hi and he said "Hi! Would you like a hug?" The trainer immediately apologized but it was too late. I gave him a quickie! ;) Like I said, Life's too short! It's better with hugs :grouphug:
-
I never liked hugs, even as a kid. I'd usually squirm out of them and run off to go do something.
-
Nah im good, you can keep your hugs. I dont like most people in general and i dont like touching in general. It bothers me immensely. I dont really like kids either so please dont ask him to try and touch me. Im not saying i would have been rude to the greeter, i just would have said no thank you. And then made my brother hug him. He got the all the good "emotion" genes, i clearly got the looks and superior intelligence! ;)
-
I think I need to give some people some hugs
:P
-
Well Courtney, you know where to find me! Come get your squeeze on!
-
Hugs are awesome! They best ones are from your children, nothing like them! From a stranger though, Idk about that.

Re: Is it wrong to express yourself...
Back on topic......
Yes, I think you have the artistic right to express yourself as long as it doesn't go past that. There are many musicians that have done the same lately Carrie Underwood, Eminime, Taylor Swift, and have made millions doing it. If it goes beyond artistic expression then yes it could be wrong.
-
-
You should express yourself the way you need to. I draw when I'm fluster or frustrated about something. You write songs.
I LOVE HUGS!!! And I love giving and receiving hugs. It's the sweetest gift a person can give. That and also a smile. They are the free gifts that the world has to offer!

to the OP.
I hope we have lightened things without being too off topic. Point is that there are a lot of ways to get it out of your system. If you want to hurt her, I mean REALLY hurt her make her think you just don't care! Sing a song about another girl. Sing a song about all the good in you she lost. Make her feel stupid for hurting you and embarrassed she lost you.

Sing a song about me doing awesome activities. Sing it with Jim Morrison's voice bc i want to be poetically haunted by your song!

Wow, I didn't expect so many replies. And I don't mind the derailment I need a little joy in my life lol. No, the songs are not about hurting her. I believe domestic violence of any sort or hitting a woman is flat out WRONG. I wouldn't even think of putting down lyrics with that type of violence, and have lost a lot of respect for artists who have. Most of my songs that I wouldn't act on are about self inflicted pain. While I wouldn't do it, it feels great to write it down. And as far as the hugs go, bring them on maybe we should all fly to a central location (or somewhere really nice with open bar for us legal ones) and have a group hug.
-
Woohoo!! Bp.net bar and hug party!!
Hahaha.

Trust me when I say I understand the need for pain. Why I like to spar. It's controlled chaos until someone taps. We dont usually go so far to knock anyone out but it does happen. Let me say officially that I don't condone violence as a way to beat down. Set aside the military and police.
Its so hard to explain that feeling when you step onto the mat for battle. You know your opponent. You know he knows you. You know that in about 10 minutes you will be helping each other up and trying to figure out who's buying beers tonight. You land a few good punches, then get tagged a few times. Now you are in it. You lose all thought and memory of everything outside you, the mat and your opponent. For me everything slows way down. some nights you get beers bought for you and some nights you're the one buying beers.
Maybe its a little insane but It makes me feel strong and powerful. When the small things in life happen I can blow them off. When bigger things happen I buy a bottle of rum and the post on here that I wanna punch someone. When its too much I go to the gym and spar for a while. Being able to step up knowing you are going to get punched, kicked, thrown, choked and beaten gives you strength you didn't know you had. All i gotta say is BRING IT! but after bring a cold beer cuz I'll be thirsty and need to slow the swelling on my eye.
