I was thinking about where I got the name for my little man & it dawned on me that it is a pretty fun story. As many of you know by now, my girlfriend was not about me gettin a snake. I finally broke her down to where I was pretty sure she was gunna cave but I had to drop the clincher on her. What was the clincher? Well, our favorite TV show in the world is Will & Grace. Our favorite Characters are Karen & Jack. So, if anyone remembers the first season of the show, Jack did a recitle at open mic nite that he entitled Just Jack! Well, the clincher was that we would call our new friend Just Jack! She was all for it & that is how Jack got his name! Where did the rest of you get the names for your BP's, Corn Snakes, Rat Snakes, geckos, etc?
-
im not too creative with names anymore, but an anole i had as a kid was named rusty-cause he was from Ruskin florida. My first bp was Kaa- from the jungle book(it was the only snake name i could think of from a movie or tv show)My mom named the chameleons cam and chamille which is confising cause i have about 3 people i know named cam that people think like eating crickets now.My mom also named 2 of my monkey skinks last year sally and harry-im kinda thinking sally is a boy now though, not totally sure though(i got pics of "her"mounting and trying to breed harry)
-
I named Goblin after a character in an Anne Rice book. Named Ghost the bci because of his pale colors. Named Octavia because I just thought it up, and later read that name in a book about Cleopatra. And I named the nippy, adoption-case male BP Ginger, cuz he is snappy.
-
Named my BCI & Burm after gods....Rocky just thought up.....my Black Ratsnake from DBZ....my Anole from FF....and my Leos from the Simpsons:)
-
My son named our bp Ozzy but said it is not after Osborne
He just thought the bp looked like an Ozzy
It was a toss up between Ozzy and Izzy

Question on Indigo Snakes
My snake names are related to my status as a dork. The corn snake is "Maizey" and the Royal Python is "Rex".
-
Initially, my collection started off with all "J" names. Joe, Julie, Jazzy, Jill, Jessica, Jake. As I finally settled on who I was going to keep, I got away from the J's. Zeus I am hoping will become the King of my Piebald line. Eddy is named after a friend, whose nickname is Eddy Haskell, from Leave it to Beaver fame. (In High School, he used to suck up to my mom and dad really bad! "Good morning, Mrs. P! Don't you look nice today!)
George was named after George of the Jungle. The kids proposed George of the Jungle, or Dave the Barbarian. I picked George.
Callie is short for California Kingsnake.
Ros is short for Roswell, who was named by her previous owner (Fourfeathers) for her alien head markings.
My wife actually named Jazzy. Her real name is Princess Jasmine. I thought that was kinda girly for a snake that will be 6-7 feet long, so I shortened it.
-
I got Atreyu and Bastian from The Neverending Story. A funny tho, Atreyu was named Sophia when I got him. the previous owner thought he was a she.
-
When we first started looking into buying a snake, we thought we would be getting a bp...and I thought a "Royal Python" should have a regal sounding name...so I decided on Caesar before we ever got it. Turns out we didn't get a ball, but got a Cape Gopher instead...but my daughter decided that he was still worthy of the name Caesar. :)
When we recently bought our bearded dragon, the breeder told us about how they're little eating machines. So Austin named him Shaggy...(From the famous eating-machine duo of Scooby and Shaggy.) :)
I'm gonna move this thread over to the General forum, since it's not really about bp's. :)

2 headed snake
I named my ball python Hydra after the Astronomical Constellation Hydra, meaning the water serpent, cause all she does is bathe in her water. I bought her a bigger tub for her to soak in jsut because she is in there so much. She is in her water at least 100 hours a week.
My iguana Duke, got his name from "Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas" named after Hunter S. Thomsons Character in the movie Raoul Duke...
-
Vasuki, our older male ball python, was named for a Hindu god who takes the form of a snake. Neph, the Afrock, is short for Nephretiti, the African queen. Beatrice and Bene****, our ball python pair, were named for the reluctant lovers in Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." Zephyr, the water python, was named for the way he feels when he's moving over your hands. Kali, the blood python, is named for the Hindu mother goddess and symbol of destruction (I think - Smulkin will correct me if I'm wrong.) Nizmo and Nevos, the durango mountain kingsnake and the striped California kingsnake, were named by our sons. I have no idea how they came up with the names.
-
Hehe - you ever read Fear and Loathing? IF not you MUST.
Pretty much - Kali-Ma is widely misunderstood and misrepresented thanks for the most part to a really awful Indiana Jones film (though the thuggis were real at one point) - in a nutshell
Quote:
Kali is the Dark Mother of the Hindu pantheon. She has what seem like contradictory aspects to most Western minds: she is protectress/avenger as well as beloved, gentle mother, she represents death and rebirth, she has bloody, violent aspects yet is called upon for mercy. Kali is the basic archetypal image of the birth-and-death Mother, simultaneously womb and tomb, giver of life and devourer of her children. Kali is found in the cremation ground amid dead bodies. She is standing in a challenging posture on the prostrate body of her husband Shiva. Kali cannot exist without him, and Shiva can't reveal himself without her. She is the manifestation of Shiva's power, energy.

Well, for current herp names, Snyder and Hanover were named for Snyder's of Hanover brand pretzels because they both make perfect pretzel shapes (I was going to name a future bp Mr. Salty, but my cousin beat me to it). Seymour is my roommate's, and she named him after herself (she made buddies with people on a fishing boat on her trip to Hawaii and when she volunteered to get more bait, they nicknamed her "Seymour the deck hand." Don't ask me.). Bo Peep most of you know was named for how I felt when he came home after being missing for two weeks. Sir Not Appearing in This Film got his name from the character who didn't appear in Monty Python's Holy Grail because he's really shy. And Waldo ("Where's Waldo?) and Scooby ("Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you?") got their names from how difficult they are to find. My next crestie will probably be Carmen Sandiego. :)
-
Marla, I love the etymologies of Snyder and Hanover! I never would have guessed.
-
Hehe indeed - now al you need is an UTZ :P
-
Smynx, thanks. If I'd already gotten a Mr. Salty, that probably would have given it away.
Smulkin, what is an UTZ?
-
smulkin, yes I have read Fear and Loathing. I love that book. I love all of hunter thompsons works, but The Rum Diaries is another one of my favs.
-
UTZ also makes pretzels and chips. Maybe they don't sell those down south.
-
i just name mine whatever the first thing i think of is.
-
Smynx, I've never heard of them, so I'm guessing that's the case. It's odd sometimes the food items we take for granted that can't be found elsewhere. People looked at me mighty strangely when I asked around about Little Debbies when I lived in Tacoma. :)
-
Little Debby is probably responsible for 20 of the fifty pounds overweight that I am!! LOL!!!
-
i went to an english to another language translation site and typed in words i thought represented my snake until i found a cool sounding word sage = wisdom in french.
-
Ummmm ... sage=wise in English :D
Eddie, LOL! I guess you don't have a problem finding Little Debbies, unlike folks in the NW!
-
Ah Little DEbbie snack cakes hehe 100% Crisco and sugar mmmmh. I think WalMart has like an entire row dedicated to them. I've always been a Hostess slut - do anything for a SuzyQ.
-
LOL, Smulkin! When I lived in Tacoma, I was pregnant with Adrian and craving Little Debbie Star Crunch. I couldn't find them anywhere, even on post, and finally had to have my mother send me a care package with those and decent cornbread mix. :D
-
HEHE - i used to wolf those down - almost as fast as the oatmeal cream pie dealies.
hehe http://www.littledebbie.com/products/StarCrunch.asp
-
Little Debbie and Hostess are both eeeeevil!
Marla...that must have been really tough to live someplace without a decent cornbread mix!
-
Yep, Smulking, those both seem to be quick-disappearing foods! Like turbo food. :)
Judy, I'll tell ya, it was a trial. ;) Once I ordered iced tea in a restaurant and was brought a Long Island Iced Tea, despite being obviously pregnant. And my first night there we stopped for dinner on the way down from the airport and I couldn't find drink prices anywhere on the menu. Finally somebody told me "pop" was soft drinks. LOL
-
snake
And for the record, it IS pop, not soda!!! The only sodas are cream & club!
-
LOL...I grew up in Texas...we called it Coke. It didn't have to even be a cola...it was still a Coke. When I married an Air Force officer and started moving around the country, I got away from calling it that, because it caused too much confusion. "Soda" works just fine. :P
Marla...if you think the NW is bad for iced tea...you should try some of the European countries. They'll look at you like you're nuts! LOL That's pretty sad though, that anyone in America would not understand an order for iced tea!
-
Eddie, you certainly never heard me calling it soda. Soda is what some people mix with their scotch in my world. Here in Atlanta (unless you're talking to a transplant), there are two options: the formal "soft drinks" for ads and menu boards and such, and "Coke" for every other purpose. As in, "Will you get me a Coke from the fridge?" "Sure, what do you want? Sprite?" I'll bet Judy is right with me on that one. And Judy, I will try to keep that in mind if I ever get over to Europe! I guess it would be silly to ask for cold tea in a place that doesn't even serve cold beer!

Marla, what did you mean by on post?
-
Gerbil story
You freaky army man....I'd figured that you would know what that means! :P LOL
I do all my grocery shopping on post, too.
-
Oh, and Marla...yeah, I'm with ya on the "Coke" thing! I worked at an ice cream for a short while, during those crazy teen years...and sometimes a northerner would come in and ask for a Coke. I would get the strangest looks when I would say "Sure...what kind?" LMAO
-
Sixx...my husband was a die hard Motley Crue fan. He wanted to name our second son Sixx, i declined. So, my last baby, bp, is Sixx. (he also wanted to name my son Hunter, Bow Hunter....not happening!!)
-
I always have a hard time thinking of names for animals. My poor dog went days w/o a name. So with the snakes I decided it might help if I had a theme. I decided any boids I get will be named after Lord of the Rings characters and any colubrids would be named after endangered species.
Right now I only have 2 boids - will be getting 2 more this weekend. I only have 1 colubrid - and his name actually has 2 reasons behind it. He's a Mexican Black Kingsnake which is also known as 'the poor man's Indigo snake' because it looks a lot like the Indigo - which is pretty pricey snake. But the Eastern Indigo snake is also an endangered species - which fits my theme. I do plan on getting more colubrids and already have their names picked out.

I was married to an Army man and did a lot of my shopping at Ft. Lewis. Little trips I went to the grocery store right by our apartment, though. In case you're wondering, he was C 1/11 FA.

Absolutely. I had the hardest time wrapping my mind around "pop" -- which to me was dad, granddad, or a noise. It tooks months before I found out what prawns were! I was happy when I figured out what jojos were, though -- I liked 'em enough to name cat after 'em. :)
-
Aahhhh.....Tigergenesis, I'd wondered about the name Indigo. I'd noticed the LotR theme with the others and knew it didn't fit there. So I'd wondered if you were also going for a "Princess Bride" theme. If you know the character from that movie, Indigo, it might match a Mexican Black Kingsnake as well.
-
My BP was nameless for the first 6 months or so I had him. Then one day I was looking through my Winamp playlist and came across a song by Einherjer called "Odin Owns Ye All", and I thought Odin would be a perfect name for a pet.
My BCI is still officially nameless, though I am leaning towards "Doc". He has what looks like an old west style goatee cause of the black markings above and below the mouth. Whenever I see him, it makes me think of Doc Holliday in the movie Tombstone. "Barber... proceed sir".
My Bearded Dragon is named "Homer" after the greatest philosopher in history... yup Homer Simpson
-
well when i need to think of a name for a new herp...or anything else for that matter, i wait until im real board...then i lay on the floor in my room and stare at the ceiling until one pops into my head :). so far ive got Mogley, Fluffy, Bull, Angela, Nameless, Tweek, and Momma. i still gotta think of names for two boas and a tarantula...oh ya and a few of those just popped into my head, no staring at the ceiling was needed. :)
-
JLC, Princess Bride is one of my fav movies. I haven't seen it in awhile, but was actually thinking of taking names from that movie - a good excuse to watch it again. I don't recall an Indigo on there. Which character is it? Guess I gotta watch it again - darn (LOL).
-
"My name is Indigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die."
-
LOL....thanks, Randy...I was just about to type that!
It's just that he pronounces it "in-DEE-go" rather than "IN-di-go." But I'm thinking that would be a good movie to draw names from. I can seriously imagine an albino bp named Princess Buttercup!
-
I think the name is actually Inigo Montoya. In fact, now that I've run a Google search, I'm sure of it. :)
-
Ahhhhh...well, I still think "Indigo" is close enough! LOL
-
Marla, and JLC, I get it now. I mean, I figured thats what you meant, I just didn't know if you were in the service or what. So marla, you are not married to him anymore?
JLC, what is your relation?
-
Freak...I knew you were wondering what her connection to "posts" were...I was razzin' on ya.
My husband is in the Air Force. Normally, we would shop "on base," but here in DC, we're not attached to an Air Force base. Fort Belvoir is much closer than any of the AFB's around here, so that's where I shop.
-
I have a dilemma...
Yeah, I think Marla is right. Now iI guess I really have to watch it.
-
ahh i see. Air force...always wanted to fly for them.
