    I want to quit!
Ok so I want to quit smoking but having a hell of a time with it :( I've cut back from two packs to a half a pack some days I'll be around six but I can't seem to get any lower. I'm sure that cold turkey from this point on would be the quickest way but sounds like less fun then cutting back has been. So is anyone else out there in Internet world also trying to quit smoking cigs?

I say gum, or you could chew/dip, but thats not necessarily a good way to quit. I used to be a smoker, its hard sometimes, especially when I drink, thats when I really want a cigarette, but most often anymore I hate the smell of it. You will likely find that after a while of not smoking when you are around smokers you will want nothing to do with it. The first couple weeks will be the hardest.

So far the hardest time to not smoke for me is during work or school when I'm at home the urge isn't as strong but I think that's because I have my dog staring at me like I'm doing something wrong when I smoke haha

I quit smoking by replacing the habit. Every time I wanted a cig I would eat an apple. Eventually it replaced the craving, and I got tired of eating apples. GL

I quit smoking almost 4 years ago. My doctor gave me a script for Welbutrin, after a week on it I had no more urges to smoke. Worked great for me. If your really ready to quit, talk to your doctor. there's stuff out ther so you don't have to go through the cravings. Good luck to you.

I quit using 3 things. My kids, chantix, and the desire to quit. It is hard at first, because you need to break the habit of doing the same thing all the time. I just hit my 1 year no smoking so if you want it you can do it.

Good luck, because it is hard, but worth it.

Another thing I found useful when quitting was to cut out things I associated with smoking or that might weaken my resolve. For me that was drinking. Every time prior I had tried to quit I would always end up having a smoke after a few brews.

Replace that oral fixation with something else. A lot of people like to chew gum but I prefer sunflower seeds so I always kept a pack on me for when I got the urge to smoke. I have a friend who had great success with dry roasted peanuts in the shell. He made a mess wherever he went but it gave him something to do with his hands which was helpful to him.

It's very helpful not to hang around smokers for the first couple weeks of quitting too.

I quite Oct 19, 1989. I remember because that is how significant it was/is in my life. I used to smoke between 1 and 2 packs a day. You just need to stop today cold turkey, now, no excuse, and just don't smoke again. I know that sounds obvious, but the bottom line is, if you are smoking even one cigarrette a day, you are a smoker, and if you are not, you aren't. It will never be easier to stop some time down the road, only harder. In the words of Yoda, "Do, or do not. There is no try."

It will suck for as long as it does. And once you are past the physical addiction you still have to get through the part of replacing the habitual rituals, like after a meal, or with a cup of coffee. Eventually all that will subside. Now for the part they don't talk about. If I had a cigarrette today, I would be a smoker tomorrow. Thats how strong the addiction is. I am not saying I am still craving them constantly. I am just saying that I have walked past someone, caught a wiff, and know that I can't ever touch them again, because it smells that good to me that the urge surfaces for an instant.

If that isn't enough incentive, think of how many more snakes you could buy in the next 12 months if you just stopped smoking and put the monies towards BPs.

I switched to vaping e-cigs. Not the ones that they sell at convenience stores, but the rechargeable, reloadable ones. They sell several different models with a wide variety of flavors in different nicotine strengths that range from 0mg - 24 mg. I currently use an eGo, and I alternate between cinnamon and Irish mint flavors...

Gum is good, smokeless tobacco horrible idea. I smoked for 6 years and thought I'd buy a can to "help" me quit. Here I am 6 years later typing this with a dip in. It's worse than smoking.

My last cigarette was February 18th 2002. That was the day I came down with a really nasty case of the flu. Very high fever, nausea, muscle aches, I was flat on my back in bed for a week. The whole time in abject misery and craving a smoke. I came out of that experience associating smoking with feeling miserable. I had smoked for over 30 years and I haven't had a cigarette since. Don't underestimate the power of negative reinforcement.

I quit cold turkey, after being a pack a day smoker (or closer to 2 packs if I was at a party). If I was just sitting around I smoked every hour, like clockwork (which was really bad when I lost my job and all I did really was sit around the house and/or party). I really believe it's a mind over matter sort of thing, if you tell yourself you have the willpower to do it then you won't do it. I just made myself say no if someone offered me a cig, and eventually it was easy to say no. Although during that time I did chew an awful lot of gum, so I guess that was my "quitting crutch" lol. You can condition your body that way. Every time you want a cigarette, chew a piece of gum! You have to find what works for you. I don't really like the whole nicotine patch/gum idea because I feel like you're just replacing one nicotine fix with another.

It does suck if I go out to the bar or I'm hanging out with people and everyone goes for a smoke. I mostly smoked for the social aspect, so I felt really lonely when EVERYONE went and I was left sitting inside because I didn't smoke. But I feel SO much healthier than when I was a smoker, so I never regret quitting. :)

Well, motivate yourself on top of it. You like herps, so put the money back that you would spend on cigs in an envelope and then get you something you really want.

The oral fixation is the key, though. Gum, suckers, jolly ranchers, anything.

My boss quit and just chewed lots of gum and ate candy like jolly ranchers, root beer barrels, and mentos. I liked it bc she shared the candy and mints with me haha!

To OP, cold turkey, gum and water. Took a few tries, last time that worked I wanted to start a family. So major motivation there.

My motivation is getting my lungs healthy so I can get into a fire fighter program 😄, I'm in the emt one right now and there at the same school an none of the fire fighters smoke I guess the amount of working out they do the smokers don't last so there's the motivation now I need candy. Hmmm eating alot of candy and breath better sounds like a win win to me
