Aspen or news paper? Majority vote
I see a lot of people in videos on you tube using news paper. I however use aspen. Would I be better off going with news paper? I could see it saving me a little bit of money. Not too worried about it though. More curious to see what the majority of people are using.
So please leave a comment of what you use and why u think its better then the other.

News paper (easy to clean, most of the time) and when feeding it doesnt get stuck to the rat.

I vote aspen. It gives a nice texture to rub against when shedding, holds humidity decently (something of a problem in AZ), and is more aesthetically pleasing.

Nah im not saying dont switch. I just dont like it when people conform to one thing just bc they see alot of other people doing it. I guess if its to save some $$$ tho then it doesnt exactly apply here. But yea anyways, if aspen works for YOU then dont be afraid to keep using it lol.

I use both, actually. I line the floor with unprinted paper, then add a thin layer of aspen. Since I only have a few reptiles in the house, and they all live in homemade cages, I wanted things to look nice but still be easy to clean and not too expensive. :)

Yeah I was just shocked how many people are already doing it. I was just unaware pretty much. I got a big box of aspen for free and I'm starting to dwindle it down. I got a baby on the way so I'm just trying to figure out the most cost effective way without negatively affecting my bps. :)

Some critters will go off feed if you change the type of bedding - and some baby ball pythons feed better on aspen than they do on paper.

I do use paper for all of mine - but keep an open mind that yours may not take to paper and be willing to change back if needed.

It is def trial and error so if I switch to paper and some don't take I will def switch them back.

Wow, I can't believe how many people use paper products. I guess it's because most of you have several herps. Myself I have one 20 gallon terrarium containing 2 very young BPs. One normal and one Black Pastel. Since I only have one tank it has a 2 inch deep layer of "All Living Things"(petsmart brand) Fir mulch. It holds moisture well and is just rough enough to encourage good shedding. Sidenote: I just got these snakes on Monday and today they had their first meal. :D I would post pics but mine don't want to show up when I attach them. Any ideas on that?

Housing bps together is not a good idea. You should get them their own enclosures.

I just wanted to say that I use kiln-dried pine. You might be able to get it cheaper than aspen, and you also may like it more than newspaper. I tried newspaper but I like the idea of spot cleaning. You can't do that with newspaper. (which, for some people, is a plus. makes the whole cage clean) It's worked really well for me and my snakes!

Can't pine cause respiratory problems like cedar?

I use a light layer of eco earth with a layer of the aspen over it.
I am lucky enough to have a reasonably located large reptile store that sells aspen that winds up pretty much cheaper than the paper towels...For the equivalent of the large bags Petco sells for $10, I pay like $3 because they buy in bulk and package themselves in a no frills bag.

Well, there are a few "wise men" on here that have been using it for, I think, 30+ years. I decided to trust them and put all 4 of my corns on it. They have not had any problems yet. And they look like they like it more than newspaper. I buy big bags of pine for $6 while the same amount of aspen is $15. I think I've been using it for 3 months now. I don't remember exactly. I have hatchlings, sub-adult, and adult on it and they are all fine.

Fair enough, I've always been too nervous to try it, but I'm glad your guys are doing well on it. I get my aspen in a giant 30 lb bag from my local reptile store for about $40, it lasts ages at that size.

I use shredded aspen currently. I have and occasionally use unprinted newspaper. If you want to use this, just go to your local paper and ask them for it. Usually free or a couple of bucks for a giant roll. Also, you can get corrugated craft paper from U-line.com and it has little dimples in the paper that help keep fecal material from spreading and still gives the snake something to rub against when shedding.

Aspen for me. It looks pleasing in my viv tank but, am thinking of switching to paper towels once my snake tubs are completed.

I have used Aspen, Pine, Cypress Mulch, indoor/outdoor carpet, sand, sphagnum moss, potting soil and probably a few others I can't think of right now. I always end up coming back to plain old unprinted newspaper. It's just easier to clean and not as messy. 'spot cleaning' is just another way of saying that your cages are dirty in places that you can't see.

I used to use (and love cypress) because it helps so much with humidity. I recently switched to using paper products so that I can feed all of my ball pythons in their enclosures without worrying that they'll ingest substrate. I've tried newspaper and brown shipping paper rolls. The shipping paper is nicer, but isn't free like newspaper. Then again, I've only gone through a single $5 roll in about 3 months with my 5 ball pythons. So the cost is minimal. My only gripe is that most of them have taken to going under the paper rather than using their hides. Kind of defeats the purpose. =)

We strictly had everyone on paper for a long time until we got some problem feeders, we switched them to aspen and we've seen a marked improvement. I think it has to do with feeling secure, with loose aspen they can burrow and mold it to whatever makes them content (my pastel makes the same exact burrow pattern every time).

On the other hand there are some that just don't seem to care, and I have a few that I've switched to aspen just for uniformity's sake even though they'd be happy with even sandpaper lol.

We use newspaper on all the snakes. However, when our females go off feed for ovulation we switch them to Aspen, just so they feel more comfortable and can move it around if they'd like.
