-
What kind are they?

Not quite what i was expecting lol...

These are Cornish cross meat birds. There are a couple extras that look like red sex link males and one the looks like an Easter egger not sure if it's a roo or hen yet but I'd guess roo since its extra. We only ordered meat birds this time around cause its too close to cold weather to get any production out of egg layers.
-
Yeah, our girls are slowing down a bit. Do you keep a light in your layers coop?

Awesome Chris! I cant wait to get home to get some layers and I will be getting some meat birds as well. I am also going to be getting a lamb to raise for slaughter next fall.

Anyone keep alpacas? Theyre like my new favorite farm animal i think...

Don't those things spit on you? You like those, but not horses?

The only reason why I'm guessing ee is because we order from Mcmurray and the offer 1 free rare chicken with every order and it seems to always be an ee roo.
And Mike I don't know anyone with alpaca. Other than their fur do they serve any other purpose besides cool pet?

Nah i think its llamas that spit at you. Llamas are kinda lame though. Alpacas are sweet, and yea i think their fur is worth money?
Horses suck and theyre stupid. Alpacas are awesome and awesome. Same with buffalo. Buffalo are awesome.
-
Alpaca fur is soooooooooo soft! And sells for bank. I went to an alpaca fur only store once and they had blankets going for thousands. A scarf was like $200. But it's like nothing I've ever felt before.....I wish there was a lovey drooly daydream icon lol

I do believe Sussex are rare, according to what I was reading about them before we got ours. They were hard to find too, places kept running out of them. Hubby actually left work and ran on his lunch break to go get ours, they wouldn't hold them for us.

My grandma has always been a fan of Rhode island reds. That's all she ever gets for her laying hens.

IMO, RIR's are nasty little pecky hens. Any I have met anyhow. And we once had a sexlink that was part RIR, and it was a butt head.

They can be, I know she had a few half bald girls because of the alpha ladies. I just love their color.
-
True RIRs have a beautiful red, I don't much care for the red of hatchery "RIRs". It's just not as nice of a color. Honestly my favorite chicken has been my cuckoo Marans roo. He was a giant baby. He loved eating mealworms and crickets right out of my hand. We gave him to a friend of the family cause a fox got their roo. Here is a pic of him right before we loaded him up. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/21/vejepade.jpg

I love the big vibrant combs and wattles on roo's. Pretty boy.

Thanks! I sometimes wish we had kept him and not our ee roo. But a raccoon got ahold of our ee girl so hopefully the beginning of spring I can incubate a couple eggs and get a few more ee's.

I meant to post this up yesterday, and for whatever reason it never posted. You should check out Joel Salatin's "Pasteurized Poultry Profits". I found this book very helpful on how to utilize land, and how to best build a chicken tractor for meat birds and all kinds of other help.

Just an update on the meaties! Almost big enough Tuesday will be 60 days so with in the next week or 2 these will be in the freezer. And for the bird I wasn't quite sure about, I'm still not sure of the breed but I am fairly confident it's a roo.

It only takes 60days for a chicken to get to size to eat?!
-
Yea I grow Cornish cross birds. They are hybrids specifically designed to grow very quickly. They are ready to be processed in 8-10 weeks. Waiting much longer and the birds will start to die from cardiac arrest because their hearts cannot handle the size of their bodies.

Cornish are the smaller ones so does that mean theyre smaller than the avg sized chicken you'd buy in the grocery store? Or since theyre hybrids theyre about the same size?

The roos can get up to 15lbs, that's the size of a small turkey. But average is around 9-12lbs for roos and 7-10lbs for pullets.
I've processed birds at 6 weeks and got birds between 6-10lbs.

Chickens grow fairly quick regardless. Most egg layers are dropping eggs around 20 weeks.
-
Where did you get them?

Yea, they have great customer service. I've found cheaper hatcheries but have never used them because of the great service I've received.
-
I think McMurray is the best around. From what I've heard. I got mine local, because I wasn't getting a bunch.

Well our slaughter went smoothly. I was going to share pics but felt it was a bit graphic (though it was done correctly and humanely). I did how ever snap a few more pics of the little reddish brown bird.

Ok, I'm going with ameruacana. The black in the wings looks like ours, as well as the small comb. Did you keep that one, or not?

I know diddley about chickens, but when we went to a "petting" farm a while back (It's a fully functioning farm that allows tours for kids to milk cows / feed goats / play with chickens etc) I fell head over heels for this little black frizzle (i think?) chicken. It was the sweetest little chicken and jumped right up in our arms (all the others were like OMG THEY'RE GONNA EAT ME) I told my husband I WILL have a little frizzle one day! hehe :D I think I read somewhere that the "frizzle" is just a feather mutation, and not a specific locality...but whatever, I must have one!

Frizzles are cool, they have a ton of personality. I have heard of people letting them indoors as pets. I couldn't imagine that though, with the poo...

Yea I think it's an EE too (not a true Ameraucana). The small comb is what throws me as to whether is a roo or hen. I thought roo for sure but I'm having second thoughts. Yes we kept it until we know for sure it's a roo.

I think chickens are probably the best pet ever. They have great personalities, they are very easy to care for, and give you yummy fresh eggs. EEs have great temperament and are very quirky, plus they lay about an egg a day or so. Frizzles can be any breed ( it is a recessive mutation) but usually it's bred into bantams for show not for production. Either way if you have any questions please ask. I love talking about chickens.

I'd agree except dogs don't lay eggs, get a few hens and you'll see what I mean.

Re: Check out these CHICKS
