Ball pythons: The gateway Herp.
Just be a man I said. Get over you fear of snakes I said. Its just one little ball python, and heck thst was a pretty cute yawn.. A year and half later ive got 4 ball pythons, plans to live my life around breeding them, I aquired a burm, and am now trading it for a baby Tegu and Breeding weight female normal. Getting a BP was HUGE for me on a base level, and now I cant seem to stop branching into bigger equally intreguing and intertaining reptiles XD Anyone else feel like it started out innocent and now youre hopelessly addicted for life?

Me! I wanted a ball python because my friends had one and I thought it was cool. 5 years later I think they're slightly jealous because of how far I took what they started with me
-
I wish I had local friends in the hobby XD My fiance likes them but isnt too knowledgable, and whenever I get talking about snakes I always get told to shutup because no one understands what im saying haha. Im pumped for this tegu though. I didnt really ever think about getting into them, but the more I read the more fun it sounds like. And this normal is a steal if its as big as was described.(I didnt get a weight. Just a pic and his word that she was big enough. What so you guys think? Im not convinved hes just wrong, and she does look pretty fat. Its just not a great pic to judge from.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/18/u8y8aze4.jpg

Re: Ball pythons: The gateway Herp.
I'd love to find some local breeding friends!! It would be a dream come true. When I got my first normal boy I was content for about 6 months. Then I started going to shows and I got ideas in my head for morphs and a future in breeding. Then came Spider boy and a few months after that, Pastel girl. Now I have plans for a rack and breeding in a few years. They are unbelievably addicting but I don't even mind  I just love 'em.
Now I want to get into a few lizards and some boas too. I want someone I can blab to all day about my balls! My friends tolerate me but I feel bad for going on and on so I don't do it too often.
-
A year and a half later and only 4 balls???!!!! How do you controll your self!!!???
I started collecting BP's in May and I am up to 8!!
I still have 3 slots open in my rack and its driving me crazy...they must be filled lol!!
I got my Pastel in May. Then by the end of June I got 3 more at a expo. A Cinnamon,Pinstripe and a normal. In July I picked up a High White Pied and then this past weekend I picked up my Clown,Albino and Spider.
I am crazy for Ball Pythons :rolleye2: :rolleye2: :rolleye2:

Yes I do and I blame all of you for this horrible addiction!

Oh, they ARE addicting! It didn't start with a BP though with me. My first Reptile was my Leopard Gecko, Gaia, and since her I've fallen hard for Reptiles but for Geckos mostly. I am planning on having a small rack (5 tubs maybe) for BPs though, but that'll probably end up expanding into more with all of the morphs I've fallen in love with, lol.
The only reason I only have 1 BP so far is because I don't have the money right now to get the morphs I want!
-
Re: Ball pythons: The gateway Herp.
So true. I have four now, just 3 months after getting the first. Not that I'm complaining!
-
Balls are incredibly addicting, and are what got me into this hobby! But more and more I'm finding myself focusing on acquiring just a few select morphs I want to work with (axanthic, clown, enchi, and lesser are on the list) and moving towards other species. Savu pythons, Angolans, pine and bull snakes, mussuranas, red tailed cribos, woma pythons, rainbow boas.... I'm still trying to pick between what snake species I should get next vs ball morphs vs a lizard/gecko (Northern BTS or Citrus beardie, or maybe a frilled dragon, or some more cresteds....).
I'm just going to have to start saving for opening that reptile zoo I want to run, just picking one is too hard :D
-
I started in Leopard Geckos, and those gatewayed to balls, which I'm trading out for four more right now. :)

My gateway herp was dart frogs! That is how I got into BPs. I was collecting up used exo-terra terrariums to build into dart frog vivariums, but it seems like everytime I would pick one up it would come with a snake (or other reptile) in it! I had no intention of keeping the first one but after a couple days of taking care of a BP I was hooked! So after collecting many exo-terras I had ball pythons, corn snakes, leopard geckos and a beardie! This was all about 3.5 years ago and it has exploded from there! It doesnt help the addiction living in an area surrounded by other small breeders and great, legendary herp stores!

It's a slippery slope... I started with my first ball python 9 months ago, and I just picked up a male BCI a few days ago. Now I have year end plans to get a rack and some more BP's in the new year. I want leopard geckos too, maybe a beardie. I really like hognoses too... I think I might want to breed my boa when hes big enough. Wait, what just happened?
Holy hell, it doesn't stop! :rage:

Re: Ball pythons: The gateway Herp.
I only had my first one for 2-3 weeks and saw a pastel I couldn't pass up. Now a month later I have a female ready in a week or two to be picked up from the breeder. :D

I think they emit some kind of "buy more snakes!" pheromone or something.
[or the 'snake hypnosis' thing is true]

Re: Ball pythons: The gateway Herp.
My name's Nicole and I'm a snake addict.
About 2 years ago I was peer pressured by a friend to try corn snake. You all know how it is, after the first time you just need more. After I tried corn snake I needed something a little stronger so I got into balls the following year. I'm up to 17 and I'm starting to get some of my friends into it. I'm sure I could quit anytime I want, I just don't want to.
-
Everyone together: "Welcome Nicole".
Thank you for sharing.

Yeah, balls are definitely a gateway herp. My roommate back when I started college got a ball that I helped her take care of. I finally got my own ball a year ago this month. Today I have 2 balls, 1 corn/rat mix, and 1.5 boas of my own (debating custody of a baby with my friend lol). I am also caring for part of said friend's collection, so my current snake total is 10: 3 balls, 1 ATB, 3 nicaraguan boas, 2 red tails, and the corn/rat. This is in addition to the 2 fish tanks I already had, a rat colony, and a crested gecko.

You're no longer just an addict....you're a pusher.

I had no intention of ever breeding when I got my first ball python. At that time, I was completely unaware of the reptile world (or as I like to call it, the secret reptile club).
Snakes are my first love, but I love all kinds of reptiles and amphibians. And fuzzy creatures for that matter! I'm up to 14 snakes and 5 different species! :D Also starting my first year of breeding with 4 females ready to go! All this over the last 4 years. My 4 year anniversary on this site is coming up at the end of the month. I can't believe how far I've come. My family thinks I'm crazy. But you guys don't...right??? RIGHT?!?!?!?
-
I admit, when I 1st got my ball, I was like, you know what, it's not right to have just 1, it makes us look weird l. Sooo, a month later, BAM here's a spider morph!!! My bday is coming up(the 23rd of sept.) so I said I wanted a new ball 4 my bday, go to my breeders house for some food and a new ball and I come back with a 1.0 mojo and a 0.1 dinker. So less than a year and I'm up to 4, I am also gonna TRY to haggle a bit at the repticon show and TRY to get a female pastel for $100!!!! Wish me luck on making my bees!!!

that looks like a columbian tegu, just to give you a heads up. they are much cheaper and more aggressive than the argentine tegus an i believe most are wild caught
-
Re: Ball pythons: The gateway Herp.
Yeah, thats what I keep hearing about the tegu. I got an email from someone on craigslist IDing him for me too, and theyve actually offered me a Male Pastel to trade for him. I think I might just do it ^^
But the one and ONLY reason I only ggot four in the last year and a half if tank constraints haha. I only had to many to Fill up, but now im going to try and get a rack build before buying any more snakes*killing me inside*
-
I had 3 Ball pythons in November of 2011 and now I have 39 (including the 16 babies from this season) LOL!!!
-
well i started off with one little pinstripe in October of 2011. Now I have 7 total. I'm surprise by how much I enjoy them. I actually went half in a pastel breeding size female with my boyfriend. Together we have 22 snakes: 18 bps, 3 hognoses and 1 boa. It's amazing how this all started with one normal bp in 2010 named fluffy :)
-
My Wife says" They are like potato chips, Be damned if you stop with just one."
And soon the Bag is empty and your Eyeing the Cookies!!!
-
I think I went the opposite way, started with a burmese, then red tails, and finally bps. By comparison they seem so mellow and cheap to fed. Once I started learning about morphs though, the hooks got in deep!
-
Because of BPs my interest in reptiles has greatly increased. Since my first BP last August, my collection has expanded to a boa, some leopard geckos, a bearded dragon and multiple other BPs. Definitely the entry into the addiction.

I went from 1 to 4 after bout 2 years :D. After another 2 years, I felt like I had enough knowledge about morphs to start building a nice breeding group :gj:. I plan on breeding 2 females this year to see how it goes. If I don't enjoy it, I'll probably end up selling the females I've been raising. I personally like the way I did it :D.
I've never owned a snake, and my mom ended up giving the animals she bought me when I was younger (9-13)... 22 years old now, just a little more responsible now :P, and I have a feeling it's going to be fun! Since I've been going to expos to see more BP morphs, I see a lot of other wicked cool animals that I want to raise! BPs are definitely gateway herps :gj:!
