Found a Red-Tail last might keep it
Hey everyone, I found this gorgeous Red Tail last night and it's gorgous. I never wanted anything larger then a BP but this baby is starting to change my mind. What species is it and how can I sex it? For those that kept Balls and Reds what are some similarities and differences?http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/17/dyty9uta.jpg

In someone's yard, nobody in the area claimed it, unfortunately in the D.C. area we are getting a lot of dumped reds lately, said kinda

Looks like a BCI, though I suck at IDing boas so I might be wrong.

Similarities between a boa and a ball python, well they are both snakes! Differenced, they get much bigger which means a much larger caging requirement. Their temps are similar, but shoot for 88-90 on the hot side. Also they obviously eat prey a little bit bigger than a ball python. I feed my BCI a jumbo rat once every 2 weeks.

that is most definitely a BCI..sexing is simple.. this works on boas only.. look near the vent and if there are visible spurs then it's male..at leas on all my males thats how i checked. also you can run your finger down the tail (behind the vent) and you may feel two "pops" those are the hemipenes... there you have it!

Really, in someone's yard. It seems unlikely that there would not be a taker for such a nice looking snake. Nice find, but I can't help ID it.

Looks BCI to me. I would try to locate an owner first. Maybe put an ad out on Craigslist about a found snake , notify your local vets, if it was my lost baby I would certainly want it back . That being said if no owner is found , boas are awesome !

Boas are great pet snakes. I personally like to have some snakes around that aren't ball pythons. I love my BPs but sometimes I like to see something slithering around, haha.

They aren't too unmanageable. I have a 6' BCI and he is a busy body and still not too much for one person to handle. He is over 20 pounds now!

I seen spurs on em so I guess it's a boy lol, thanks guys yeah it's awesome having something so powerful compared to a bp, like going from a nice riding sedan to a muscle car

a buddy and I were fishing from his dock one night about 10 years ago and i seen what appeared to be a 8-10 foot snake swim by, we shrugged it off as a nutria until the neighbor found it in his boat house a couple days later, turned out to be a 11' burmese :O

Looks like a regular Colombian BCI to me, and if you keep it (or are keeping it now at your place) you must, must QT it for he sake of your other snake(s).

Sad that it escaped or was dumped, but cool you found it. I agree with the others, QT the snake in another room as you have no idea how long it's been out and about. It might even be worth a Rep-vet visit just to gauge the overall health of it. How was the snakes behavior when you picked it up?

Your caging will end up being different, but if in fact it's a male a Boaphile 421D would be a great enclosure.

I'm slightly jealous as I want a boa pretty bad. Good luck.
