not sure your experience, or level. Mine is zero. However, just from what I've read on here, sometimes...they just don't want to.

Need to give it more time. Some are slower then others. I'm new to breeding I started about 2 months ago, and I got 2 males and 2 females breeder rats. it took about a month and a half for mine to start showing and birthing.

After breeding it takes about 23 days for them to have babies and it does not mean when you put them together they starting breeding right away. i would give it some more time, How old are they? they might be too young or old.

Males need to be at least 500 grms to breed,
and females need to be 1500 grms.
All you are doing, is putting unnecessary stress on them.:colbert:

This thread is listed under breeding rats, I think you were giving info for the OP if he were trying to breed snakes at that age/weight. . . .:P

I was having trouble breeding my rats. I was doing back scratches; I read some where that was to stimulate the rats. I introduced males in rotations. I have 3 males, and six females. Nothing for a long time. Now I have 41 rats in total, and two more girls that have not popped yet. Just be patience. It will happen as long as your guys are fertile. One of my male was a true albino; even though he liked the bow chicky wow wow. He was shooting nothing but blanks.

I have no tips for you.

Just a big fan of your screen name. A HUGE fan. Thought I'd pop in and offer that up.

Maybe she wanted a fancy dinner first?

But seriously. If he's 6 months old, and at least as big as she is I guarantee you he's getting the work done. I started out with a 1.1 and got nowhere. Turns out my female was larger than my male, and bit him every time he tried. Wound up getting rid of her grabbing 5 more females, and about 1.5-2 months later I had a few litters. Now my guy has a nice little harem and no production issues. I would recommend watching your rats behavior and make sure she isnt dominating HIM, and maybe get another female or two just to hedge your bets if it isnt working out with this lady. If none of that really applies, then liek everyone else said all it takes is time = P

Tell that to the fire babies I have now from a 400 gram male :rolleye2:
Tell that to my yellowbelly het clown babies that came from a mom bred at 1200 grams.

The only undue stress is from ppl spreading undue rumors :colbert:

    Back to the RAT thread...
Rats don't always breed immediately after being put together, sometimes it takes several heat cycles before the female will allow the male to breed her.
Larger males are more insistent when it comes to breeding and usually can get the job done faster, but not always.

One pairing I have the male and female are the same size, the other pair the female is a little larger. I finally saw a little action going on last night, hopefully the deed was done. I ordered best love songs by Marvin Gaye...this should work wonders.

Give it a little time I could tell you the horror stories about my start to rat breeding but Ill spare you the long detailed version and cut it short.

I have a 1.3 colony took almost 2 months to get my first litters and they were pathetic. First mom had 4 and they all survived to feeder size. Second mom had 11 and none survived I do not think she was producing milk and we were out of town for the weekend. Third mom had 1 and well it didnt last the night. Now my second go around (at about 4 months) is going great I have more rats than I know what to do with I had 2 litters of 14 and 15 and they all made it to weanlings ATM. My third mom is absolutely huge and should pop anyday. So give it a little time and do not be to quick to feed them off if the first litter is small.

Maybe there was something wrong with her, and that's why she never had babies? I just got 16 out of a first time mom.

Give the male 2 weeks with her and then you have about a 4 week wait for babies.
Just rough estimates but give them some time.
Also I never count on the first litter because they will either not know what to do with them or eat them:mad:

She might have had a breached death--that is where she was pregnant, but you couldn't read the signs and then she died.

    That happens, too.

There are a few tips about rats. Sometimes keeping the male and females separate can help and then the female will give signals like arching her back so her butt is in the air and then her ears will wiggle. The cycle for this is exactly 3 days and then she will breed with the male like crazy, taunt him and seek him out.

If the female isn't interested, she'll just kick him, mostly in the face. Be sure to give your male a break so he can find her interesting again.

I also found out the more you coddle the rats, the more likely they will breed successfully for you. Give them protein heavy food during the pregnancy. Give greens and treats. I haven't had a litter below 10 babies. I've had up to 13 babies where all survived. If the rats feel fearful, you're picking up the rats by the tail, the more likely they will not only bite you, but not produce well for you. Rats are prey animals, and they tend to be sensitive like that.

My roomate got them about 6 months ago from the let store. No signs of sickness in any of them. I feed mazuri. I think I'll try some treats for them.
