    STRANGE......
Lil' girl just got into town today and she was cold and sluggish with her metabolism having been knocked down because of it. Got a quick pic as she settled in for her acclimation having warmed up some in my hands. Quickly regaining her senses she gave me a quick peck on the wrist as I set her (maybe too gently) down :P

Thanks - hope the chilly trip didn't do her any lasting harm. Trust me I was as pissed as she was.
  • 03-16-2004, 06:11 PM
I hope shes OK too....Bloods are very susceptible to RIs if they get too cold.

That is what I am worried she might develop. I can hope that since the transit was only 24 hrs and started in Miami that her chilly adventure and the settling of the heat pack away from her in the container was significantly less. Still she was so lethargic when she arrived her strike attempts was pitiful - then as she warmed up her eyes were jerking periodically (like a twitch every 15 seconds or so). That quickly abated, which is good because it was really freaking me out. I'll be watching for that elevated head maneuver.
  • 03-16-2004, 06:28 PM
I think she'll be fine....but definitely keep an eye out for open mouth breathing, wheezing, and/or mucus come from the nostrils. RIs hit hard and fast with Bloods.

Not too much - like accidentally grazing yourself with a few xacto knives - very fast sting. Managed to not pull away but I was kind of surprised she hadn't hit before that point so i was almost expecting it. Given that sort of transit I'd be kinda pissed too. Her teeth are very tiny but she has some in the lower jaw I hadn't known existed - made a sort of W or VV pattern. It was pretty cool to see her able to open her mouth so wide her upper and lowers were in an almost straight line. Love peck. I'll snap a pic if you're really curious.

It's amazing how varied the teeth sets are among the various pythons in pattern, shape, alignment and proportional size.

I'm shuddering. Please post pics! I'm curious now to know what a snake bite feels like. The Ball pythons at petco I saw today were striking at anything that moved. I'm now tempted to try and take a hit from one of them

The best way to describe a snake bite is having the sharp part of velcro poked against your skin, lol. Trust me, after you get tagged a couple of times the fear goes away.....I get bit now and forget to even look at the bite when I'm cleaning cages sometimes LOL.

Gorgeous snake! who's the seller? where you satisfied (beside shipping)?

LOL iceman - don't go hunting for that action heh it'll happen eventually. The speed more than anything will drop your jaw lol - there's not much biting pressure from the jaws at all.

Ken - she came from Xtreme Reptiles in Miami and I was pretty satisfied overall except the shipping could have been a lot better. The price was insane but they answered all the questions I had, told me when she last fed, let me request a femme etc. Really it was just the packaging I was disappointed with.

Anyone else get a snake through mail, and if so I am wondering how well it was packed. This lil girl was just in a bag in a nest of shredded newsprint withh a heat pack floating around in there. The box was styro lined but I would have expected her bag to be in a container with (or nested in a couple) a heat pack taped to the container.

    Thank you Mr. Hamper!!
I've received many reptiles through shipping and it really varies on the methods people use and how well they do it. I've had snakes that were shipped in horrible conditions (no heat pack in November) and snakes that were shipped in perfect condition.

i had a snake shipped in a styro-lined box, in a pillow case full of newspaper with two heatpacks. all the way from CA to VA in december, and he arrived fine.

    NEAT BACKROUND
If the heatpack was in or near the snake bag I'm sure she would have stayed warm the whole way. "Contents may settle during shipping" must've been how the heatpack wound up at the top of the box fill and the bag at the bottom. Were your heat packs in or attached to the snake container? Gah - I'm sure I am beating a dead horse here and venting my worries she might get sick - it's all good. Peas out.

Depends on what your getting tagged by......

Just dont ever take a hit from a Boa on purpose...when mine was 2ft she made me bleed like HELL! Imagine now at 41/2...or a 7ft adult!

Heh - my lil girl is still very frisky. Went to change out her water and she came after me three times - she's got a knack for the lurking thing:

That's a very cool pic, Smulkin! Are bloods typically ambush predators? It sure looks like she's just waiting there for you to dare stick your hand in her territory again! :P

Cool pic! And yes, Marla, Bloods are ambush predators......as you can tell they aren't very well adapted for "active pursuit" of prey, lol.

Congrats on your blood!!! That's a lovely little snake. :)

Keep a close eye on your snake's behavior with regards to the substrate you're using. Sometimes baby bloods can be very nervous little buggers & have a tendency to burrow rather fanatically through their substrate. I've found that the exceptionally nervous specimens are great at filling their mouths with substrate while burrowing & sometimes do better on paper towels or newspaper until they grow up & simmer down a bit.

This may or may not be applicable in your situation, since I'm not familiar with your blood's individual behavior, but I thought it was worth mentioning, just in case.

Good luck with your new baby - can't wait to see more pics!!!

    Your fellow bloodhound...

    Is my BP nodding?
She's only burrowed a few times so far. Thanks for the haeds up on the substrate watch in the mouth. Hopefully we're ok in that regard asa we don't use the jungle bark variety with the smaller pieces or the mulch but still, given her frequent open mouthed lunges iI could see her maybe latching onto a piece by accident that way. Still a very suspicious little girl that will strike at anything moving within a foot of her she hit her incoming f/t a few times but not in a feeding strike so much as defensive. She's sitting there now with the leg still in her jaws lol. Giving her penty of room and time and quiet and keeping the movement around her cage to a minimum (when we don't have it covered to help her feel more secure).

She is gorgeous and thanks all for the kind words (she's blushing), but looks like it will take some time to get her calmed and handleable and definitely be a while before you can reach in to pick her up by hand. She's still got about another week before we try any of those overtures though - she's not one to rush.
