I know everyone who feeds live has to have at least one "pet" they acquired.

I thought we could all post pics of those we had to save ;)

This is Ash. I bought him as a hopper. From the beginning he was tame, and that's one of the reasons I love him and probably keep him.

He eats wax worms from my fingers, and has no issue with picking him up :) he also likes to sit ontop of his house :/ instead of in it.

Hah, cute! I'm usually pretty good about not keeping rats that aren't producing, but when I picked up Isis to be a breeding female... only to find out that she was not only a he, but sterile, I still had to keep him. He is the most amazingly docile, social, lovey rat I've ever had - perhaps barring Harley, my first pet rat ever, but I spent so much time with her that she actually bonded with me and would groom me and everything. Both were black berkshires, too.

I want rats so bad! They sound like so much fun :( possession of live rats is illegal where I live. If caught, it's like a $5000 fine per rat!

    Alberta, Canada.

I've heard that there are people raising rats in our province, but it's seriously hush hush. And there's also been a "threat" to our rat free zone:

I wish they'd give it up, especially how you can have them in the neighboring provinces.

I had a special hatred and maybe even a little freaked out by rats for huge chunk of my life. Right up until we got a few to breed for food. My daughter showed me some of them make great pets and are very sweet and smart. Kinda funny keeping some for pets and stealing there kids for food. Ha ha.

People are allowed to raise them for Reptile food if they have a permit and the Rats can't be fed to the snake/reptile live. I'm sure there are people out there that have Rats illegally though since getting a permit would be a pain.

I think it's stupid that we can't have them. :@

I know! Alberta isn't rat-free... proven by the "outbreak" recently. There is probably hundreds of colonies of rats around that they don't know about. It's silly.

This is Lucky, I guess you could guess why he's named that lol. I bought him as a pup to feed my first experience with a picky new snake. Apparently she only likes live MICE. He survived the night, so I figured he deserved a chance. First words out of my mouth when I discovered he was still alive?

    "Lucky little ........" lol

    Yup, he was bottle fed.

No pictures at the moment, but one of my breeding groups produced two male hairless rats. As soon as I figured out they were hairless, they became pets/future breeders. Now both males are happily set up with two girlfriends each... :gj:
