Naming Your New Additions....What's Your Method?
So do some of you have a logic behind naming your new additions? I was thinking about naming my after a theme, which happens to be old school cars. Whats yours? or how do you come up with the names you have?
-
I dont name my BPs but when I name my animals I like to name them like their people. I dont know why I do this but thats just how I name most of my animals. Like I named my chameleon cameron. And my hog island boa Salazar (nothing to do with Harry Potter)....
-
No theme, I just name what I like. Some are from movies/TV, some I just heard around, some I made up (or maybe I heard them elsewhere and subconsciously I thought I made them up) lol
-
We are kind of boring when it comes to naming our snakes.
It all started with the Military Code, shortly after that it was whatever my wife decided on the day we picked up the snake. We have a girl named Sunday, bet you can't figure out what day we got her. Now we have Pastel#2, Pastel#3 etc... They all get pet names eventually depending on their personalities, but there is no method to our madness.
I have seen some cool names n the board here that referenced Marvel Super Heroes, Mythical Gods, Movie Stars and Celebs etc
-
No themes here. Some my daughter has named, some we just all decide on something we like.

I've decided all mine will be named after mythology. And not just one mythology, ones from all over the world. :) That is, whenever I get more snakes.

No real theme here either, except possibly for my crested geckos. I try to name them after natural things - spices, herbs, etc. But the snakes are all given names that mean something to me or suits their personality. :gj:
-
The girls name ours. That's why they have names like Jellybean (cornsnake) and Baby Bee. Hey they wanted to name the new bee Starlight Shines and then they settled on Baby Bee.
-
I have a hard time naming pets as well. I started to name things that they remind me of. For instance, My leopard gecko Juice. Named him that cause he's the same color as the juice I drink as my morning wake up beverage. lol
-
No theme here.
3 of my snakes were already named when I got them:
Bobba Fett, Shayla and Neveah.
The two I named:
Weedle ;) and satyana
-
I name mine things that relate to what morph they are. Patel - Gypsum, a mineral used in making pastel paints; Spider - Serine, the main amino acid used in spider silk for wrapping prey and egg sacs; Cinnamon - Nutmeg, just another brown spice. I now have to find names for my new hypo, VPI axanthic and het VPI axanthic. I'll also be picking up a lemonback soon, so maybe I'll name her after a type of citrus fruit?
-
My males got names of black guitarists and females got disney princess names lol
Except the burms and one crazy female ball python was named after the crazy chick from Dexter because she used to be a psychopath.
-
We only have one snake, but did have some reasoning behind his name, Herman.
DH's parents mentioned (very unobtrusively) some time ago that if we didn't have any male children, it would be the end of our family name. We ended up with two girls and arent having any more children, so when we got our albino, we rather lightheartedly named him Herman, after my FIL. :P

Most of mine are named either Bob or Fluffy. They never come when I call anyway.
I gotta admit though I do have fun naming my boas. Boa Derrick, Sonny Boa-no, Little Boa peep, Boa Diddley, Boa Bridges, Merci Boa-coup, Boa geste... It's just too much fun.
-
Mine are mostly named after Soulcalibur characters for now, some came with names and some I just name based on what fits (in my mind). If I don't pick names my husband will... He still refuses to call my honeybee anything but Wobbles....
-
I am an English teacher so I try to keep mine based around literature, mythology and that kind of thing. My wife is a little more random with names and she has named most of the reptiles. I have a dog named Wesley though from the princess bride. One of my corns is named Adalind (we call him Addie) and it means noble serpent. I named my new ball DaVinci. He is a pastel. DaVinci was one of the first to use the pastel art medium…so ya thats how my brain works.

Re: Naming Your New Additions....What's Your Method?
i just name mine whatever comes to mind after i get to know them a bit. there is no real theme. my male pastel is crazy legs douglas, female IJ is mean helen jorgensen, two box turtles are clemmie and humfrey and three leopard geckos are named turtlepants, meat hook and fruit bat.
then there are the furry animals.....
-
I usually take my time in naming my snakes, but most eventually earn a moniker. Their names are usually a state of mind, or emotion. Fear, Fury, Sorrow, Spite, etc.

Re: Naming Your New Additions....What's Your Method?
Nice post I was curious about the same thing and trying to figure out ideas.
-
i normally name off personality. it takes a good month or 2 before they get an 'official' name in my house. my first bp was lucifer becouse he was a a terrible snake. hated people with a passion. we have a female named hunter becouse she hunts around her cage for a solid 5 min before shell eat. we have an escape artist named mcgyver. self explanatory. a female named bertha cuz she was 4200 grams when we got her. etc. i could go on but its 1 am and i work at 7 lol. i guess this is just our crazy house.
-
I don't really have a method. If I'm reading a book series or watching a TV show or movie that I'm really into, I might name a snake after one of the characters.
Charlotte was named because I had met someone else with a spider ball named Charlotte.
Fabio was named after the "I can't believe it's not butter!" guy.
Spot was named because leopards have spots.
Dolly was named because she was such a doll when I held her. Now she's developed much more of a feisty personality.
Chester was named by a user on a forum I moderate.
-
Yup, we have a method. Kind of.
Species: (ie: ball python = BP)
Morph: (ie: normal = NL)
Date of birth: (ie: 2012 = 12)
Gender: (ie: Female = F)
Additional numbers if there are multiples.
So, if we had a 2012 female normal ball python that was the third in the rack her tub would say this: BPNL12F3

I named some of mine by using the word snake in a different language but mostly just whatever feels right

Re: Naming Your New Additions....What's Your Method?
I love to hear where people get names for their pets.
For me I was naming my small animals for singers of bands I like. I started with my Leopard Gecko named Chance after the singer from Skeletonwitch. I'd had her a few days and no name was coming and I was reading an article on the band in Revolver magazine and I liked it even though my gecko is a female.
I then named my hermit crab Bruce ****enson (Iron Maiden). My daughter got her dog and named her Lzzy (Halestorm). I had my husband go pick up a Leopard Gecko I saw on Craigslist and I was hoping it was a male so I could name it after Phil from All That Remains. It was a female and after 2 days of trying to pick a female singer name I went with Phil anyway, though I say her official name is Philomena. We were going to continue the theme when we got our first snake (BP), but decided to go with a goddess and she became Persephone so now we are doing gods/godesses for our snakes. Our 2nd snake (corn) is Juno. I have a new Ball Python (pastel) coming and am trying to decide on a name. Pluto and Adonis are at the top of the list, but I'm still thinking...

Re: Naming Your New Additions....What's Your Method?
I love hearing about this.
Well when I first got into snakes, I had: Nacho, Chapula, Bell (RTB as in Bell Grande), Enchilla, Toritta, Emplanla (I think I spelled it wrong this time).
Bell passed away and due to financial issues I rehomed everyone but Nacho (she is my oldest).
I have had hamsters, Fudge and Banana. I named all the above while eating. lol
Now, I was trying to get names that go together, but my spider male, Spaz, I had to go on his personality. I had never owned a spider morph and watching him spaz out 'wobble' it just fit perfectly. I also have Nacho, Ava (from a movie), Dream (orange dream ice cream), and Caspar (a movie).
My dog is Bear and my cat is Carmella. Carmella was named after a character from a vampire book I read for a college class. The name was Carmilla but for some I never could say it correctly and always said Carmella. Very different but so is she.
I also named my mom's poodle/terrier/chihuahua mix who is less than 20 pounds, named Cujo.
I guess I have names from every where. ;)

Re: Naming Your New Additions....What's Your Method?
For snakes I like Mythological and Fandom names :'D
I've already picked Calliope out as a name for my female girl :'D
-
Mine all end in the short /a/ sound-- Diedra, Vassa, Flika, Mira. At least for now!
-
I name mine after fictional characters!!! My cars are all named after futurama for example. 1 of my ball pythons as you see is named after the same show!!!!
It's just w/e I want though!!!!

I just go with whatever comes to mind.
Ekko is my normal. I named him that because I just think echo is a cool sounding word, but I like spelling names with K's.
Drako is my spider boy, named him that because I'm a total Harry Potter nerd, and my boyfriend is a big fan of that dragon movie that the dragon's name is Draco, so we both loved that name. Also spelled with a K instead of a C.
Zenna is my pastel girl. I just randomly thought of that name.
Loka is my spider girl. The marking on her head looks like Loki from the Marvel movie when he wears that helmet with the long horn things coming out of it, so we named her after him. Just made the name more feminine with an A.
Bayne is the cinny boy. Named him that because he was the biggest snake we had at the time, and we just watched the new Batman movie a few days before we bought him, and Bane is a big beast in that movie. Just changed the spelling up.
Paxton is the ghost, and not sure why I named him that. It's the name of the main guy in the first Hostel movie, and I just always loved that actor and that name, so I just decided to go with that.

Re: Naming Your New Additions....What's Your Method?
Great question! It's tough when you don't really get to know them for a few weeks during the settling-in period. I named my mojo girl Dinah, which is part of a private joke that existed only in my mind until now: that her full name is Shadynasty, after a character on an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But my dogs are called Stella and Cassie, so Dinah kind of fits with that - a kind of retro-nerd name. I have a male super pastel who's still unnamed after 3 weeks. I have a few ideas floating around but haven't quite decided yet.

Re: Naming Your New Additions....What's Your Method?
All the animal I have owned, aside from my dog, I have named after South Park characters. So far I have had TIMMY! (Red Eared Slider), Tweak (Desert Agama), Butters (Red Eared Slider), Token (Ouachita Map Turtle), and my newest Clyde (Ball Python). I am eyeing a female BP that I am thinking of either Bebe or Ms Crabtree. I tried to stick with the obscure characters and not the main ones. What can I say I am a South Park nut :rolleye2:
