Petco Rat Proves Out

Back in June I picked up a trio of rats (a male hairless, a female dumbo Siamese and dumbo Himalayan) and figured I'd be all set for the time being. Well I was in Petco the next day looking around and for some reason I decided to look at their rats although I wasn't expecting much other than albinos, blacks, and hoodeds. It's sort of fluffy and wavy and looks almost mangy. I decided to grab her and figured another female couldn't hurt.

Well today her first litter has opened its eyes a d while checking them out during cleaning I discovered that half of them have curly coats as well!

I guess she's proved out not to just be a mangy rat but a Rex. May not seem like much but I found this cool so I thought I would post it. She's also throwing out some silver babies which I also find cool. I'm still learning as far as rat colors and such but I'm finding it to be extremely interesting. I'll probably be keeping back one of the silver Rexs and see what other oddities I can get to start popping up.

Mom is obviously a rex and that means 50% of her babies "by odds" will be rex's ;)
Momma rat might be what is called a loose rex.
Loose rex's come from breeding a double rex X double rex where the outcome is said to be 75% double rex and 25% mixture of standard coats and loose rexs.
The loose rex typically has a rex coat that isn't very curly compared to a standard rex coat and whiskers that are only slightly curled.

I've got rats that are like that but not Rex. There's another gene similar to rex but is called curly but doesn't make any hairless rats.

Are you speaking of velveteen?
Velveteens are just like rex genetically, the double velveteen is just like the double rex hairless.
The double rex is called hairless, but it's not really a true hairless, only recessive trait hairless stays completely
hairless.
As far as I know only rex and velveteens make curly coats...

I really dig my rex rats and I am holding a couple back cuz I think they are so cool and I want to get a bigger variety of rex goin in my colony. Right now I only have a gray faced female and a creamy colored female. Idk what the heck all the types are... :)

Grey is call blue, there is a Russian blue that is quite dark and an American/British/slate blue that is very light colored blue.

Creamy colored is usually beige, they have red eyes.
Champagnes are somewhat creamy colored, they have pink eyes.
Both are black rats diluted to that coat color by the color of the eyes.

Thanks for that explanation. It definitely makes sense to me because when I got her I was looking up pictures of Rex's but they all seemed to be a lot more curly compared to her where she is just fluffy really.

I know what you mean, I'd like to try to get the Rex into Siamese, Himalayan, and dumbo as I'm working with those right now. Should be interesting!

what aboout creamy with black eyes? thats what i have...

Black eyed white
Black eyed Cream
Black eyed Siamese
Black eyed Himalayan

No these are different than them. The guy I got mine from has never gotten a hairless rat and I've yet to get one even pairing my curliest two. I don't have any babies or I'd get a picture of one a curly one next to a normal.

As far as I know the only known genetic curly traits are rex, velveteen.

^^^^these 2 rats you show might be loose rex's, they look very much like one's I've produced.

There's another coat type that makes the fur sort of shaggy. I think it's called "harley" fur.
