    Lost a whole clutch today
Well, I was very curious why my clutch hadnt started poking their heads out yet. I had cut on day 55 and today was day 59.

Long story short is the mold that I thought was long gone weeks ago must have been hanging out in the vermiculite. 1 of the little guys was covered in it, and the rest were just dead.

Total out of 4 eggs I lost 1 normal, 3 pastels, and a pewter. I HAD TWINS!

I was going to take pictures to document this to maybe help somebody from making the same mistake, but I was just way to upset.

That's terrible, I've very sorry to hear about it. :( I have a male pastel and female cinny that I want to breed to make some pewters myself, so I can empathize. Twins!! Talk about a ball buster, again I'm sorry, and I hope that you hit on the pewter again next year.

I do want to piggyback onto this post/incident - I've never bred BPs but I've lost corn snake eggs to mold. I am thinking that when I hopefully get my first BP eggs next year I will go substrateless. Also, I read about everyone cutting their eggs and I always see warnings about not letting them dry out after doing this and also about how it opens up the babies inside for infection. I personally don't plan to cut any eggs, even once they pip themselves, as these guys have been getting out of thier eggs for likely hundreds of thousands of years on their own just fine. Do you think that cutting is what allowed the mold into the eggs? I sure hope not.

I cut because of the stories I've heard about babies not being able to get out. It happened to my brother 2 years ago. I've only been breeding for 5 years, but I've cut on day 55 to day 59 on all my clutches. Waiting just kills me! You would think waiting 55 days, another 5 shouldn't be that bad.

As far as infections, I've been lucky. No molding on the eggs either. I have worried about them drying out though. Last year I had to pop a Bumblebee from his egg. He just didn't want to come out and started to stick to the egg.

    Sorry for your loss:(
