oscar fish

does anyone have any oscar fish? if so can i see some pics and can u tell me about them

My moms ex husband had a 250 gallon tank with 3 fully grown oscars. They are pretty dirty fish, worse than my fiancee's fancy golds. They also will not reach full potential in a tank that is too small and without a very good diet. I personally wouldn't keep them myself after seeing how they are in person for many years...

I have a tiger oscar and an albino tiger oscar in a 55 gallon high tank with some other assorted south american cichlids (mostly convict cichlids cause they wont stop having babies...) and the oscars i think have reached about the largest they'll get in this setup, about 9 inches long.

The oscars are the least aggressive towards the other fish in the tank but i've seen them hunting the convict babies quite a bit, but they're both the most excited about feeding time when we feed them morning/afternoon.

All of the convicts will pair up and then slowly dig a burrow for themselves one pebble at a time until they have fertilized eggs hatch, and most of the wars happen because of one pair defending their breeding space from anyone that wanders too close... including the poor little plecostomus (well not little anymore, he's like 14 inches).

^This. Their big dirty fish and do better in larger aquariums. Dont feed them feeder fish, I never reccomend that because they carry diseas and can make ur fish sick.

I've got a tiger oscar in a 75 gal. He is messy but has personality. He always comes to the side of the tank when he sees me. I raise my own guppies to feed him with so I know they are healthy. He's the only oscar I've owned that is super aggressive to other fish. The only one he hasnt killed is my big pleco. I wouldn't trade him though. Regular water changes and gravel vac are a must. I wouldnt keep one in anything smaller than a 75. They dont stay small for long.

I have been rasing and breeding oscars for about 10 years now.
Few things i dont agree with is that everyone thinks they are dirty(most folks dont maintain their tanks well so they seem dirty)
they do have alot of personality and can be kept with other fish.
a variety in their diet is always best and i do agree NO FEEDER FISH unless you raise your own.

What I mean by "dirty fish" is that they require a bit more work to keep compared to some.

I understood what you meant but most folks that have now experience with them take (dirty fish) statement the wrong way.
Actually if you dont feed feeders they dont require any more work than any other large fish.
I gravel vac, do 80% water change once a week .
Most folks under filter their tanks for large fish,under filtering for any large fish the water will fowl quickly,oscar are pretty strong so most people
dont clean as good because they seem to be fine longer than most other fish so when you see alot of oscar tanks that look dirty is because
most people wait till they look sick before they decide to maintain them.
Actually oscars are the best beginner large cichlid to start with and the most easy to maintain(dont require anything special except clean water,good filtration and a variety in the diet and room to grow)you give them that and you will have a very healthy fish for years to come.
my oldest oscar is 14 years old(the dark color one in the pics)

Buddha - wow your tanks are awesome. I know this thread is old but I just found it since I recently got back into fish keeping. I got out of keeping snakes entirely and decided to do the fish thing again.

I have two Oscar tanks (75 gallon and a 55 gallon) each with one Oscar in them.

I'm really enjoying being back in the fish hobby and relearning all the correct ways of doing things again. Its amazing how you forget all this stuff once you leave the hobby for 5 years like I did.

Well, just wanted to compliment you on your tanks and gorgeous collection of fish.

This is my tiger oscar...he has the most personality out of all my SA Cichlids...I can't stress enough about proper filtration...they are no dirtier than any of my other fish. It's just like caring for any other animal, you just need to know how to properly maintain their tank. In this one tank I am running two canister filters a power head with a venturi and a second one without, to keep circulation going.

I love oscars and have kept a bunch of them. They are messy cichlids in my opinion. They grow big. Eat a lot. And are very messy. Any other smaller fish in the tank will eat the food that comes out of your oscars gills when it's eating. They also poop a lot from eating a lot. If you don't keep you water parameters spot on they are very prone to hith and lle. I still have a red albino oscar now. Love them to death!!! They are awesome SA Cichlids!!! But they are still messy fish any way you look at it IMO.

They are very personable though which is awesome!!! They don't hide much. And will come up to greet you and such :when feeding or coming near the tank gj:

have a 135 with a pair of 3 year old Tiger Oscars right at 12", 5 silver dollars and a pair of Rafael Cats. My Oscars are big fish with big appetites, but all the other fish were chosen to help eat their scraps, I vac/change 25% water weekly, and run a FX5 filter, so the tank stays clean and the fish stay happy. Between the fast moving school of dollars, big lumbering Oscars, and sneaky armored cats there is about as much variety as I could while keeping the bioload acceptable, trying my best not to get anyone eaten, and setting up a tank requiring little maintenance. http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/...ps013cc0ba.jpg
