    How do you sex?
This is strictly for ball pythons, since other species of snakes are hard to pop(adult carpets).
How how do you sex you ball pythons?
I personally pop my bps while probe other species.

I prefer popping for both hatchlings and adults.

I rarely probe the few times I did was always because the animals were very tensed (those were adults) which made it more difficult to pop.

I thought I stumbled onto a different forum when I saw the title of this thread!

I prefer popping at any age. I haven't been comfortable with probing. I had a ball probed by a professional and they said female. I then popped him and he was very much a male!

I pop - if it's male, they're done. If I didn't get hemipenes I double check with the probe. Ain't nothing wrong with being certain!

Badly! I've managed to confirm all of the animals I've purchased by popping, but I'm really terrible with hatchlings. I'm terrified of hurting them, or I don't know, maybe I'm doing it wrong? I usually end up taking the entire clutch to the vet to get probed. I'm going to have to start probing them myself, because I just don't trust my popping.

Yeah, that's what the vet does. It's very solid when he does the popping: penes all the way, or no penes. And then he double checks the girls with the probe.

I only have 2 yearling bp's both I have popped not probed. They are so much easier to pop then my colubrids! My new kingsnake didn't need to be popped when I got him, he musked me and everted his penes lol!

As for my corns I pop the hatchlings and probe the bigger ones. I can tell by feel when the probe goes in if it's a boy or girl. So I don't have to stick the probe in very far.

Edited to add Both my BP's are males :) lol

I pop all of our snakes from hatchlings to adults. I do have a set of probes and will use those on possible females sometimes to confirm my pops. Males are pretty obvious and usually do not need to be probed.

2 of the 3 vets I took my ball pythons to said that my snake was either too young to properly sex, or too dangerous to attempt to probe or sex at their size... Excuses really. The vet I ended up sticking with double-checked the sex of my snake via probe, even after I told her that I bought the snake as a female. I thought that was pretty cool :gj:.

Too young to sex, that's hillarious.
We pop them dripping goo straight out of the egg :rolleye2:

No probes here, I want to see the sex organs, there's nothing like a visual to be sure if it's a female or a male.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good learn how to pop video? Chad pops and probes, but I honestly don't know how. I've asked Chad to show me, but I guess he likes being the only one that knows in these house

I don't know the video, but try googling it. It's kinda tricky at first and much easier to learn on a hatchling :p warning, they may pee on you!

    Re: How do you sex?

I find that question a little personal... but if I am to answer honestly normally I request dinner first.

On a side note, we probe and pop (depending on the size of the snake) unless we bought the snake from a breeder I trust.

    Re: How do you sex?
I prefer probing, but I do both probing and popping for hatchlings. I only use the probes for anything larger than about 200 grams. Getting a good pop of a male to clearly evert the hemipenes will certainly confirm a male. However, I say if you don't get an obvious view of the hemipenes, then probing should be done. Probing can be kinda tricky, but when you probe a male and female back to back you realize that the difference between the two is rather dramatic. Males not only probe at twice the depth, but there is much more lateral room for the probe (i.e. lots of 'play' side to side), whereas the probe is a lot more snug for the females (all else equal). Of course, probe depth as determined by subcaudal scales should be the best judge (don't include the anal plate in your count). Males always probe at least 6 scales and usually more, and females never go more than 4 (usually 3).

Summary: I say learn both techniques. Use popping to confirm males, and use probing to confirm females. Occasionally both should be used on an individual to be sure.
