Got called a reptile freak today
So today I was talking to someone about animals and I said that I kept snakes his immediate response was "Oh ur a reptile freak!" to which I sit and think to myself "Hmm I never thought of it that way". So I say to him proudly "yes I am a reptile freak!" Anyone had a similar experience?

No, but people do know me as the snake and bug guy around here. It seems intimidate a lot of people around here, so no one bothers to say anything to my face. I did have a lady call the cops on my wife and I one time when we were selling some baby corns to a guy in the empty Wal-Mart parking lot. She told the cops we had "dangerous reptiles". The cop pulled up with lights blaring and when we showed him the deli cups with hatchling corns he instantly started laughing at the lady's stupidity.

My wife on the other hand is known as the crazy rat lady because she always has a rat in her pocket or on her shoulder. The drive-thrus around here know us pretty well because we go through often with our rats and order them kid sized ice cream cones and other treats. It is always great meeting a new hire in the drive-thru window because they always spaz out when our one rat, Irwin, takes the dollar in his mouth, walks down my arm, pays for his ice cream and brings his treat back.

A couple of people at work said they needed to hold an intervention after I purchased my 4th reptile, so I quit telling them about new acquisitions. And when one of them tells a newbie about my "giant" collection (based on hearing about a small portion of my pets) and that person instantly asks if I have snakes in a worrisome tone, I always just ask them if that's a problem and that throws them off guard
Oh and my other half's friends say I have a reptile farm, which I don't like that term.

I just got called the snake whisperer last night lol. A friend of mine has been asking me questions regarding her friend's bp not eating. Thankfully through great insight and info from this website, I was able to suggest what to do. The snake has been happily eating away ever since my suggestions.

So, thank you BP.net, I must be doing something right :gj:

I know and everybody who criticizes is soooo uneducated on the subject. Like when they say are they poisonous, that's not even the correct term... Too generic. You use venomous. Or when I mention a ball python they're like oh man don't they get really big. I'm like... Do you consider something that weighs half a new born big... Then no lol! Is real udon cuz it messes with peoples heads. Hey I'm a Scorpio.

OMG, video or it didn't happen... that would be SOO freaking cool. I love my rats, my daughter just took two home with her for pets, a hairless dumbo and a very good looking black one with white blaze on her face.

seriously, please post this video...I really want it to see it. Not doubting it in anyway, just want to see it.

My boyfriend's brother-in-law has been asking me lately: "Why do you have SO MANY reptiles?! Why would you even want a reptile?"

To which I replied: "Why do you have a baby? Gosh, why would you want a baby? They're expensive and poop all the time and cry.... Just because I don't like babies doesn't mean you can't have one. It's whatever makes us happy, right?"

I get called the Reptile girl or 'The girl with the snakes'. Lots of different names.

One thing I've noticed is the people that are the most scared are the ones that are so quick to throw out negative stereotypes. I was moved to a new department at work because of renovations. I'm in with Accounting for a month while they rebuild my office. When they found out I have snakes, the... most boisterous lady in the 'group' here stood up and said: "You have SNAKES?! And REPTILES?! OH MY GOD!" and proceeded to make a huge scene, telling me all sorts of stories that she's heard and trying to convince other people why they are dangerous.

I calmly let her freak out for a bit, then told her I'd be happy to answer any questions or concerns. So everyone started asking me things instead of telling me things, and I was able to clarify some concerns. To the point two of the ladies went from being judgmental to being curious. Phrases like: "I've never heard that about them. That's actually neat." were being tossed around.

But, it was so clear to see how just one person's negative (and loud) opinion could scare other people into believing it. I'm glad I was there to disspel a variety of concerns and rumors. Like eating cats. I laughed. I'm like: "My corn snake is maybe 1.5" at her thickest part. A cat is... what... several inches wide? That would be like trying to stretch a sock over a watermelon! Haha."

Nah, no cool names in there. Just weird or crazy. And I now have people at work that avoid me as much as possible because they either A) think they will catch something from my snake via contact with me (what exactly they think he's packing, I have no clue ) or B) some of the holy-to-the-extreme rollers now think I'm in cohorts with Satan or something cause snakes are evil. <--- I'm not joking, wish I was. and C) They just think I got really flippin' weird. I have one friend and my BF that are like it.

Those people just make me laugh! My neighbor has 5 dogs. What's the difference between 5 dogs and 5 snakes? Well, the snakes don't bark all day and night, don't shed everywhere, don't cost as much in upkeep like vet visits yearly, flea spot treatment every warm month for 5 dogs, heart worm tablet x5 every month. etc etc... Id go broke (and crazy) with that many big dogs!

But they think I'm a little "off" for having a bunch of snakes! I've tried telling them hey, I have 2 cats, a dog, and a few small lizards too! Most reptile keepers have fur babies too ;)

I had a neighbor get pissed off at me so she had the cops show up at my house at quarter to one in the morning because she feared for my children's safety. Yet her kid spends the night at my house all the time
Needless to say, I don't talk to her much anymore.

Some people I work with are actually afraid of me. Oh well, I don't care for them much anyway :)

I think it is funny when you educate people about them and once they actually realize just how harmless they are they start asking questions and becoming genuinely curious about them. I know it doesn't happen very often but it is nice when it does.

Heather, that is hilarious! Really? The cops? What did the cops say? Most cops here I know are pretty genuine guys. You probably could've invited them over to come visit with the snakes

If I have ever gotten any names, it hasn't been said to my face, and I've been lucky in that most people I talk to are more interested than anything. Once I was called to help my aunt's friend with a "giant 6 foot snake in the cable box!" but it ended up being an adorable little garter.

I work in a building of 800+ people, and anytime I'm introduced to someone new, I am introduced as my parents' child (they worked here before) or 'She's the one so and so was talking about that has all the snakes!'. My Manager and coworkers are constantly asking how the snakes are doing, or if I'm "expecting" this week. Haha. I have to people on my team that are petrified of snakes... and I've gotten both of them to touch one (one was actually shaky and getting teary eyed.. but still touched the snake, and got to tell her family she actually did so)! Even though they are 'grossed out' and frightened by snakes, they respect them more after talking to me, and can still appreciate the amazing colors and patterns they come in.

So I get called 'the snake lady' a lot, but it isn't usually negative. When people ask if I'm scared or afraid of being bit, I explain that it doesn't usually hurt much when they do, and I rarely ever get bit - I'm more concerned with getting peed or pooed on. When asked if I'm afraid they'll eat my cats, I explain that only one of the snakes we have is potentially large enough to eat one of my cats.. and he's terrified of her. If the cat is too close, he takes off the other direction. People thing it's interesting that a 'big scary snake' is terrified of a little 5 lbs petite siamese kitty :)

Most of the time, people just appear stunned when I say I have snakes. Then they do the whole pity head shake thing, you know what I mean.

I actually caused a scene once over one of my snakes. I went to a "Reptile Day" at my local petco, more out of curiosity than anything. Took one of my bigger girls with me. Several people were entranced by her. Had to pose with her for a few photos to prove a few people actually got "that" close to a huge snake. Then I just kind of went walking around nosing. There were quite a few people there with their pets. Ended up over by the adoption area, and there is a whole group of ladies adopting kittens. So I walk over by the window to peek in, I'm certainly not going to just walk in, that would have been un-necessarily rude. One looks up and see me there and immediately starts bugling at the top of her lungs about how I could not come in there with that huge and dangerous snake that would eat the kittens.

I tried to be polite, I explained I had no plans to go into the room, I was just looking. She just keeps on bugling, and soon the others join her. "Keep that monster away from our little darlings! You just keep that nasty creature out there! You can't bring that viscous thing in here! You just need to take that freak thing and leave, yes leave before it hurts one of our babies!" That sort of nonsense. People staring and whispering to each other and nodding over those ladies comments. So I snapped.

I drew myself up tall, and said in a loud clear voice, " I had no intention of going in. I don't want one of your nasty tempered little flea ridden beasts hurting my beloved snake. I'd be crazy and a fool to let one of those destructive little monsters anywhere near my darling pet!" Then I turned and walked away. The ladies quit bugling and just stared after me stunned. The people whispering nodded their heads to me. One actually said. " Good for you, what idiots they are!" And loud enough for the kitten ladies to hear. Boy were they upset. How dare someone infer that my snake was better than their darling kittens.

Hubby was laughing his head off when we left. He told me he knew I was tough, but he'd been afraid I'd do something stupid. I told him I wouldn't do anything to endanger my snake, but they better hope non of them met me when I didn't have her to protect.

Yep, I've been there. Everyone who knows me calls me to relocate any 'bothersome' animal that they have in their yard or house. I enjoy it, and it keeps the animal from being killed, so it's a win-win. I've been approached at pet stores many times and asked for advice because I look like someone who "knows about reptiles" :D I suppose I do have the look about me.

Had my screensaver running today at work. I'm Receptionist, so people can see my monitor pretty easily at the moment.

My courier driver comes up, drops off my packages and points at my screen. He's like: "Is that your snake?!" I look and it was a picture of a ball python. I'm like: "No that's a friends. But mine is the same kind."

He proceeds to tell me horror stories he's heard, and tells me he has no idea why I would want to keep a 'dangerous' animal like that. So instead of arguing, I started asking him questions. If my corn snake is only 2" thick at her widest point, and 5 ft long, how would she possibly kill me? She couldn't even break my arm if she wanted to.

The more we started talking, the more mad he got that I had answers and explinations for all of the myths he had just finished telling me about. Once logic was presented, he just got huffy and left.

Moments after he left, a few co-workers came up to start telling me horror stories they had heard. At that point I was interally mad. And that's when I realized what the heck this is....

GOSSIP! People just LOVE to gossip! And they'll gossip about anything that makes their story sound interesting, because then they get attention. Even if it's at the expense of false facts or embelishing stories.

Thankfully, my one co-worker comes over, laughing and says: "He thought that your CORN SNAKE was going to KILL YOU?!" Meanwhile, this lady is scared of snakes. But even she thought it was ridiciulous.

hahaha. I work at a pet store, so if I wind up talking to any real people about my snakes, im usually just spitting basic knowledge, in depth husbandry requirements and feeding tactics. Ive had enough other animals it usually doesnt come up unless they bring it up. My mother in law is wary of the burm, but our entire family is fine with the snakes. They have a bigger problem with the ferrets really XDD
