What every BP breeder should own?
Planning on growing our collection, but not quite sure what to get. What are some morphs that you guys think every breeder should own, or snakes that you'd love to get, or snakes you love... I'd love to hear them all! :)
-
with soooo many morphs there is no must have. I say everyone should have piebalds so the market becomes saturated making it less expensive for me to buy. You should find the morph you want to have or make and go for that. Though a yellow belly is good with the sheer number of combinations that morph alone has.

Everyone needs pastel or super pastel females! And mojaves!
-
-
Banana everyone needs a Banana in their collection.....
-
Everyone needs whatever morph they like best in their collection...
-
No matter how hot a combo gets, whether it's color, pattern, or both, adding spider to the mix will make it 10x hotter!
If you're looking to start building a breeding group, you should first look at what your budget is, how many snakes you can maintain, and what designer morphs you want the most.
For me, I feel everyone needs an enchi female, pastel female, a female of the BEL complex (mojo/lesser/butter/etc..), and a spider or pinstripe combo male :gj:

Yeah I would pretty much have to agree with this... Especially the enchi part. :gj:

You need what YOU like
As far as base morphs go Enchi, Pinstripe, Lesser, Pastel, Hypo and Pied are a must and will a allow you to make some great combos, spider too depending on whether or not you are comfortable working with them.

Re: What every BP breeder should own?
Thanks guys, keep 'em coming! :D
I plan on getting what I want, but with all these options, it's good to hear what other people's choices are.. helps me narrow everything down a little bit more.

I like the fire combos (fireflies, axanthic fire, etc). I also am a big fan of some of the recessives; can't beat a classic high contrast albino and an albino pied or lavender albino, pied or not...?! Smokin' animals, those. Miomosas are sweet animals, if you like the champagne gene. I'm not a huge fan of spiders or pinstripes, on their own or in combo; just my personal opinion but anyway. Most everything looks better with some hypo in it, if you like recessives at all. The yellowbelly genes are nice for cleaning up some other morphs and combo well with about everything, not to mention the super. I think it all really depends on what you like: lighter/darker morphs, lower contrast vs. high contrast animals, busy patterns vs. subdued...all up to you. There are so many animals to pick from and if your finances/tastes allow and you pick up a few multi-gene males/females, the skies the limit for what you could produce with 4+ gene animals.

Re: What every BP breeder should own?
Buy what you like...a good mix of incomplete dominant genes and a couple/few recessive genes is great. Hypo is an absolute must, IMO. I personally just can't get into albinos. Everyone has different tastes, and there is demand for all morphs/combos...just be sure to pick out nice ones so you produce nice ones.

If you don't like pieds, clown is a terrific pattern morph that's been less overproduced and has been holding its value a bit better. You can do lots of the same crazy combos, and then charge twice as much. (...she says as she rolls out the rats for her piebald collection.) :gj::gj:

I would invest in something that you like and as high in the market as you can afford

Boas to eat all your refused feeders!

Re: What every BP breeder should own?
hmm, it seems you need a hognose.... and a big normal girl:D
-
Every bp breeder should own at least 1 male and 1 female. (lame attempt at a joke!!). Other then that its up to you.
I usually recommend new people getting the morph females first if you seriously want to breed. You need females to make the supers. If you buy a male and normal females you will produce eggs faster but it will be a lot longer until you're making supers as females usually need at least two years before they can produce.
-
Ill have to say anything hypo. A pastel or super pastel female. To me a male BEL complex and female normals. Anything super goes good with normals. Id also say black pastels or cinnies tons of awsome combos there.
-
Just get one of everything :P
-
Re: What every BP breeder should own?
whole bunch of big ass fat normal girls and a 4+ gene male
-
All ball python morphs:gj:
Mostly anything you like and what you hope to produce in the future.
Me personally I like albinos, pied and hypos as my ress genes, and pastes lessers/butters, spiders, pins mojos, enchi, and fire or vanillas.

Re: What every BP breeder should own?
Can never go wrong with codoms but me I pefer the Pastels and Pastel Yellow bellies I had a 7y.o. pastelyb that has held most of his color and just a impressive snake (gave to brother for Bee project)

I'm a big fan in using supers. I'd rather have 1 super pastel female than 2 pastel females. You'll spend a little more for her versus 2 reg pastels, but you'll save in the long run. Half as much food, cleaning, and electricity. Plus you can't miss on the odds when you breed her, at least on the pastel aspect of the breeding.
As far as "must have" morphs, I'd have to say Pieds and BEL complex.
-
Yeah, that's actually what I came back to say: rather than breeding for supers, if you can, START with supers. I have a super mojave girl here, and omigosh, do I have plans for her... practically ANY male I pair will her will make gold. I just realized this week I can pair her with the black pastel and make black magics.... and that's just if I get bored, that's not even what I bought her for.
I've been missing a lot of 1-in-4 chance double-gene combos this year. Just because you pair a pastel and a spider, doesn't mean any of the babies will hatch out bumblebee... but having a super parent means everybody is at least guaranteed to be SOMETHING.
