Does anybody breed their own dubia roaches?

I've looked into it, and only heard good things.
it would be nice because my beardie eats A TON!!

1. They are silent
2. They are odorless
3. You can breed them in a sterilite tub
4. they are more nutritious

And..


They're free!! :)

Does anybody breed their own?

We do! Our interest in the colony kinda comes and goes. We only have 4 beardies and they are the only ones that eat them. But the roaches are always there. Nothing to it! When we put more maintenance into them the produce like mad, when we don't they slow down. We rarely give our beardies crickets. Its almost always dubias and meal worms (along with the greens and bites).

You can hear them in the tubs walking around and what not, it's not loud, but a bunch of little feets make a little bit of noise, but nothing like annoying crickets. Also they may not be as bad as crickets, but they are far from oderless, they poop and poop smells lol.

My girlfriend breeds them. I know nothing about them, but I do live with them, so I can comment on those two points.

So it's super easy to breed them?! Because I'm going to be moving my beardie in his new enclosure, and will have a spare 20 gallon long tank, so I could use that couldn't it?

He's just breaking the bank with crickets :oops:

I have my own small colony. they are amazing, i have them in a rubbermade bin over a human heat mat. If you plan on getting some get them from gotdubias.com i got 7 ,breeder pairs and a few hundred more for $40. My beardie loves them plus if you have too many you can just feed the breeders to him.

You can use the tank just make sure you have it in a dark place(they like the dark), i keep mines in 2 10gallon tanks upstairs in the closet. they breed like crazy. Never had one get out yet.

They are the easiest insect we have tried. We grow our own meal worms, dubias, hissing roaches, fruit flies and spring tails. They just need an occasional food item and a water source. We use the water crystals so the babies don't drown in a water dish. For food, my wife is always throwing random scraps in there. Potato pieces, bananas, celery but they really go crazy for oranges! Not sure that a 20 gallon would work really well. I think they like it darker for the most part. Ours are in a large, blue sterilite tub. I put a small screen window in the top. They live in our closet.

Well yeah I was going to put the tank in my closet, it's super dark in there.

I breed them and barely put any effort into it. I'm setting up a 10 gallon for mine because they have already outgrown their little tub.

We breed them too. I've had a colony going for over five years now. Unfortunately, I've developed an allergy to them so my wife has to handle and care for them. That is the only thing I don't like about Dubias.

In my closet it stays around 83 degrees. Will I need an additional heat source?

Also, I see here online where I could buy a starter kit of 50 small, 40 medium, 10 Large. Do I just put them in the tub and let them do their thing? Lol

They will do fine at 83. If you need them to produce faster you could always bump the temperature a few degrees.

Yup, after your colony kicks off you'll have a range of dubias, from newborn to adults, all cohabiting the same tub so there should be no issues starting your colony as such.

Awesome, yeah I only have one beardie so I won't need that many

I have a small colony also I breed them for my savannah monitor he is a beast and eats alot. very easy to breed
