I think this hobby has decreased my value of a dollar
I've noticed that what I consider cheap most people would consider expensive.
"I got her for a great price, she was only $425 shipped"
    "Only?!"
People look at me like I'm crazy.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

    ME! Definitely me.

Petstore ferrets are worth $150 max and I always hear people whining about how expensive they are. $150 is peanuts to BP keepers. haha....
My portrayal of "cheap" keeps going up. I'm now at the "$800 is a good deal for that!" stage. LOL.

It's funny because I hate paying for expensive inanimate stuff. I just dropped $500 on a new camera. I felt like crying when I checked out of the shopping cart on Amazon.

Yes. I was upset that I had to spend $350 for a new 40 inch LCD tv, but wouldn't blink an eye to spend that on a snake.

    This is so true ahaha

I'm at the point where a $500 snake is cheap :P.. I'm pretty sure this kind of mentality isn't good for us... Some things are just WORTH it :D. We just tell ourselves "eh... XXXX isn't that much :P" lol.

Ok but to make yourself feel better, walk into a pet store........................

This is a great thread, hahaha. It's so true; I don't like spending money on most things but show me a nice snake and I'm there!:D

Haha, absolutely! I drop $150 on groceries and it seems so expensive, but I look at a $500 snake and I'll go beg my boyfriend to consider setting up another "snake area" for room

This is a great thread lol. I honestly couldnt agree more with everyone. When i had to buy a laptop for school it was $400. I complained about how expensive that was and blah blah blah.
At the last expo i spent close to $700 and came home with rats, various supplies, and 2 bps lol.

When you lay it out and compare it like that its like WOW but in the heat of the moment it doesnt seem like as much at all.:gj:

I agree, 250-300 on groceries: what happened? Why that much?!

The 47" LCD I got out of box $450: it's a great price, but crap that's a lot of money.

The leo pair I want: CMOOOOON it's only like $450 shipped! What a steal!

Or the cinny pair I want: it's $300 shipped for a female and we can go to Mike Wilbanks in the city for the male for $180 with tax! Pleeeeease! Haha.

Oh hell yes, if my wife went out and spent $500 on clothes I'd probably flip. But, if she bought a snake for that.... I would probably say good job babe!

You're not in trouble until you serisously can look at an animal and say "Hmm 4K yea that's a pretty good price".. from that point on it's just down hill..

Loved Pieds back when they were $15k.

Got my payment down on my Pied hatchling for $750.

    Definitely a great deal.... :gj:

..... that my other half will not get to know for quite a while :colbert: :D

But then again, he drops $1-2k on 'upgrades' for his vehicles and it's nothing, haha. "New headers for the 5.7L. Downpipe and custom exhaust for the Grand Prix. Ohhh I should totally paint the truck!"

It's all about 'what it's worth to you', I guess!

Personally? I hate spending more than $15 on sunglasses, and $40 on new shoes

I just spent what I made in a week on snakes, without even blinking an eye.

But to pay $4 for a box of cereal?!?!

Lol, I love this thread and agree with every one of you. My husband wants to spend $20 on downloads for his game and I'm thinking, what a waste! Can I get a $500 pewter girl??? Please???

    Cereal as well as vegetables.

I can get more meat for the money the wife spends on vegetables! Who needs 'em!

More balls are necessary anyway, haha.

People buy champion show line pet dogs that actually do things like provide companionship for like $1500.

My bank account is at 20 bucks the day before my paychecks. 700 for a snake? NO PROBLEM!

Re: I think this hobby has decreased my value of a dollar
Even though I'm a newcomer to the hobby, it took only about 2-3 months for this to set in. I can still smile even after spending $700 on a snake.

Like others have also said, when it comes to spending $4 on a box of cereal or $7 on a 32 oz jar of peanut butter, I can only scowl and think I've been ripped off...

$23 for roasted cashews.... freakin ridiculous....

Totally looking at a $50 pile of sterilite tubs like they're gold right now :P

I discovered this to be true at the Herp Expo (San Jose) last weekend, but luckily I didn't have ANY money to spend - even on those "great deals." In particular I found myself looking at an Angolan Python, one of my dream snakes, and saying "What a fantastic deal @ only $495!!" If I'd had that kind of money to blow, I definitely would have snatched up one without batting an eyelash.

I'm looking at dropping 5K+ for a motor and trans soon. what the point of having money if you don't enjoy it? snakes are my 3nd most expensive hobby. lol

My snakes eat better than I do, sometimes I go a bit overboard, like I spent around 1.1 grand this month on snakes, so I'll have to pinch pennies until my next pay check, but I never regret it.

Lol, I hear ya. I am going to spend $1800 on a standard poodle to compete with, and that's a lot of money. But I've got two snakes on order for $2250 and that was a good deal lol

Yep, I try to explain it to coworkers, but they feel I have a misconception about how much money to spend on a hobby. Last month I spent around 1600 on a couple snakes, the month before that it was 4 grand in photography equipment. Now its another 1200 in a couple PVC cages and stats. . . however, I go to fill up my tank and its like, Wow come on $65 to fill up for a week??

As my coworker put it, "Some people buy boats, some people buy snakes"

Definitely how I am now. Ive dropped $3500 in the last 3 weeks and didn't think twice about it cause it was stuff I needed for projects... Yet i still hate spending $60 on groceries.

Lol yes, absolutely. For me it went in steps. At first the most I would consider was the $200-$300 range for snakes, then it went up to $500, then I bought a group for $1000. Now I'm looking at $2500 snakes and thinking "I could buy that in the next year or two." I feel it will keep going up.

My father doesn't think my snakes are worth that much, he's the one who bought me my first bp for about $30, so he assumes you can buy clowns for that much.
