BP Eating mouse backwards

He has been trying to do this for a while now, probably about an hour maybe? But he wont spit it out and try another spot....

Don't worry. Leave him be. As long as its not too big he will get it down. Sometimes they do this. My boa likes to strike in the middle, and then try to consume that way. They always manage to get them down. :rolleyes:

What if it seems stuck and he wont try and eat it anymore?

EDIT: Also, I am very tired, should I place a paper towel in his cage and put him in there somehow or should I leave him in the container I feed him in?

Are you staring at him? Leave him be, turn out the lights, and go away for an hour. Some of them won't eat if you are watching or peeking. Dark and alone may be best. How long have you had this snake, and how has he eaten for you before? They all have their quirks. But backwards is by no means anything to worry about. They can manage.

I'm sure he'll be just fine! All my snakes like to eat them backwards. Once they break the legs of the mouse or overextend them, they eventually get it down. I'd suggest just leaving him instead of staring at him and come back after awhile. Maybe he doesn't like an audience. I have one who doesn't like me to watch her eat.

Doh! Feed him in his enclosure. That's probably why he isn't eating. He has the mouse partially in? If so, at this point and if he is in a seperate tub, you are along for the ride until he is done, or doesn't eat. It you feed in his tank, you could just let him be. Bps will not develop cage aggression. That is the best , stress free place for them to eat.

I've always fed my snakes in another container. I'm more worried about my snakes ingesting the aspen bedding.

They digest and break down bones, aspen isn't going to kill them....

I didn't know that they could digest wood. In about a month I'm switching to a rack system on paper towels or newspaper, so it won't be an issue anymore.

He has eaten for me before multiple times in the same container as now. He was feeding just fine and he is just having issues getting it down and it looks like he is trying to back it out but its stuck and he cant get his mouth from around it....

He finally spit it out and is leaving it alone about to throw it away after I put him back and sanitize this nasty tub!!!

If it isn't brained or too messed up you can try rewarming it and offering in enclosure or bag it and refreeze it. The general opinion I hear is one refreezing is okay, but not any more times than that.

And, as always, you can just throw it out. ;)

I feed my guy live lol, stunned of course, but I ended up throwing it out because he was shedding and I think he was more worried with getting that extra skin off at the time! Hes beautiful today!!

P.S. This was also my 1st shed with my little baby and it all came off together real nice like :D

That was probably it. Ours has only gone through one shed- and she ate during it, but seem to be a lot more hesitant about the whole process. Post shed, she ate like a champ. I think the "experts" will say to give her a couple days before trying again, but I could be wrong in this situation.

Also, our snake is going through her 2nd shed with us, and has had no interest in eating this time.

I guess we'll learn their quirks as we go along. :)

And about eating backwards..ours has eaten one mouse in reverse- she got it down, but it was difficult for me to watch her fool around with it for so long. It was nice she was in her tank, so I could just let her be :)

That is a quite handsome snake. The only substrate that is a real issue to be ingested is actually paper towel. It is not common but with anything but babes there is a chance and it is often fatal. My vet has done 3 emergency surgeries over the years to remove paper towel from snakes. It cannot be digested, and often regourging it is difficult as well. If you are going to use a feeding shield a bit of thin plastic works really well I use a roll able plastic cutting board from the dollar store (or at least I once did I use coco coir now and have no concerns at all)

He/she (not sure on sex as petsmart said they usually get female but didn't know....) is a petstore baby, but I still love it a lot!!! I am about to pick up a baby pastel from an actual local breeder next week (hes waiting for him to eat one more time before he leaves) and I think I am going to ask the dude to sex my current one so I know what they are, and if my current BP is a female I think some breeding may be in order when they get mature enough!!! I want to breed them, get a female pastel out of it and the buy another male pastel for my chances at a super pastel!!!
