Keeping your Reptile Room Smelling good

Alright guys, the gf ALWAYS complains that my reptile room smells bad (when I think she is just crazy ;) ) but what do you guys do to help keep the smell in your reptile rooms down??

Don't really have a smell from the reptile room unless someone has recently made poo...do you keep rodents in your room? The snakes themselves don't really have a smell...:confusd:

Like sho220 said i have no smell unless they went to the bathroom. Even then it takes a lot of them to really stink up the room. i use newspaper as a substrate an will go threw tubs a few times a day an clean out any that have gone to the bathroom or spilt there water. This pratice keeps everyone clean an the room smelling like there are no snakes. Feeding day it will stink for a few hours till it airs out but thats about it.

I agree, room doesn't smell unless one of the snakes left a present.

Keeping tubs clean is #1. I do think they have a unique odor normally but don't really notice it unless it is particularly humid..and don't find it offensive. I could see how somebody else might.


Keep a couple open boxes of baking soda in the room. May help.

Hmm, what is your room like?

Carpeting?

I have my racks all over the house haha but I don't notice a smell.

I know you should try to avoid sprays, plug-ins, or sented candles.

What are you using for substrate?
I find the place gets kinda smelly if I'm using newspaper or paper towles but it smells great when I am using coco-husk.

Yea its in a carpeted room and i do use newspaper.. maybe i should change over to aspen or coco fiber?

I find the coco has a nicer woody smell to it.

I heard someone recomend once for carpeted snake rooms to thrown some baking soda down on the carpet a little while before you vacum and it helps. I don't have any carpeting in my place so I can't speak from experience but it might be worth a try.

Snake pee has an odor, and when you use newspaper, the bin can pick it up. A good cleaning and disinfecting with bleach will deodorize it.

Cleaning the obvious poop is step 1. Always check for urates, or liquid excretions. I use aspen chips for younger snakes and it just looks like an area of darker yellow chips. As adults I switch to cypress and finding urates gets more difficult. Other than that, there should be no significant smell coming from your snakes.

In the long ago past I noticed a worse smell with using printed news paper over anything else. Blue Scott paper towels are all I've used from then on.

I have a few things that help keep the smell down.

1. Clean clean clean
2. Keep trash can empty
3. Exchange air once in awhile
4. Remove soiled tubs from the room

All three of these help a lot. If you let any of these things go then it gets stinky fast.

I have never noticed a smell either. I also am exacting with cleaning I check one a day my partner checks once a day too. The garbage gets emptied every second day or if there is a lot in it. I keep all mine on coco husk now I have tried aspen cyprus and paper but prefer the coco to them all. I never had oder issues. I wonder if your room is too closed off and not venting well? I generally have good ventilation in the enclosures and the room.

I have 11 snakes in my room and the only time there is a smell is when one pees or poops, but I clean that up right away. I use paper towels and never smell anything.
