Who would do such a thing!?
So I was driving home from work last night around 9:15pm had to stop at a light and a car was turning down a side street and the lights from the car illuminated something on the grass on the side of the road that looked like a large tank. Being confused as to what exactly it was I turned down the street to get a closer look... It indeed was a 40g breeder tank w stand and a note taped to it saying "FREE! Take me or I will die. I am healthy" so I pull off to the side of the road and get out to look at it. After looking it over there is the tank, stand, a shop light w a flood light in it, water dish, food dish w nothing in it, under the stand was a large Rubbermaid container filled w super worms. I couldn't see anything in the tank. I was cautious cuz I didn't want to reach in the tank in the dark and get bitten by something so I took out my phone and used my handy flashlight app and hiding under some cork bark was a decent sized bearded dragon! I looked around to see if anyone was around like this was a joke or I was being punked lol. I didn't see anyone or anything. Being the animal lover I am I put my hands in and picked him up. Seemed healthy ish, no signs of bugs or injury. So I loaded his stuff up in my truck and took him home.
I am guessing some child quit caring for him and the parents got mad and took action (stupid action might I add)
I am guessing he is about 2 years old. I am getting a UVB light for him since all that he had was the flood light which when I put a thermometer in got over 200 degrees! I switched that out right away.. Poor guy!
I can't believe someone would do this! I don't have any idea how long he was there.
I've never kept a beardy but I'm doing tons of research now and printed a list from the beautiful dragon website on what foods to feed him and so on.
Heres a couple pics of him..or her, I don't know which. I'm just calling it a him.
Any of you experts see anything wrong w him I might have missed that you can see from the pics? I feel that he is a little skinny so i plan to fattin him up.. Unless I'm wrong and he is ok the way he is. I have a vet appointment set for Wednesday, that's the earliest I could get.

Poor thing. How can anyone leave such a gorgeous animal on the road?! Props to you though! :gj:
Glad you picked him up out of all folks. Sounds like you're doing everything you can for this guy.
Either way, don't forget to put him in quarantine! :)
Wouldn't want your other animals to get sick.

Poor dragon, lucky dragon, lucky you! I don't think he's your average dragon either, maybe some citrus in there?
-
Yup. People suck. Awesome that you showed up for the little guy though. I got my Dumeril in a similar situation. She and a male (both adults) were left in a fifteen gallon tank at the backdoor of a business in the middle of the night. In the winter. The male died but we were able to save the female. Now she has a cushy forever home.
He's a pretty little thing and lucky too! What are you gonna name him?
-
Ohhhh I found a morph!? Lol I don't much about bearded dragon morphs, I thought he looked more yellow then then ones I have seen but I didn't know. How fun!
I'm pretty excited. I went to the store and got all these tasty greens, different squashes, and fruits (all on the list that beardys can eat of course)
Yeah I hate the people for doing what they did but lucky for him and me I will give him much better care AND it was all free!
-
Oh and I named him Dr. Finklestein haha
-
Haha, that's a great name. Terrible yet awesome find, congrats! He does definitely look more yellow/orangey than a normal beardie. Can't wait to see some pics once he's settled in and got a bit more weight on him. Hope everything goes well with the vet trip!
-
I figure I'll set him up with a photo shoot if the vet visit goes ok :D
-
That poor little guy! How could someone do that? I'm so glad you stopped and got him!
-
Good thing you found him.
He's a lucky guy to be picked up by a reptile lover.
Good for you fire saving him

He's so damn sweet, he already trusts me and cuddled up w me and fell asleep.
I took him outside w me and when I brought him back in I set him on the couch and ran to put something away and when I came back he was passed out with his face in a shirt haha

Definitely not a normal. I've had six dragons now, and he looks relatively healthy. You can usually tell the gender on bearded dragons, from looking behind their vent. If you haven't already, look into starting a colony of blaptica dubia (yes, a roach). They are marvelous for feeding dragons, and so much better tahn crickets on every level.
Anywho, do keep us updated, don't forget to update your signature now, and if you have any questions I'll do what I can to help. :gj:

Nice looking Beardie. I hate the way people just abandon animals. It must been fate that you would be driving by...

Thank you! I had been looking into roaches in the past. I dunno if I want to start a colony because I only have the gecko and him that would eat them. They might get out of hand fast. Lol and since ur into beardies what do u think he might be?
-
It doesn't really matter what he is cuz he is special no matter what I just think its fun to try to figure it out. So from what I've been searching he looks exactly like pics of hypo pastels that I've found... Now on that note I also found out that if they are hypo they have clear nails.. Which he does not. Then I was looking at citrus sunburst but they are lighter...
Is it possible to to have a citrus x hypo pastel that doesn't have clear nails? Cuz if so then I think that's what he is. Lol
Also I've noticed that at night almost all of his darker spots completely disappear and he gets a lot brighter.

Re: Who would do such a thing!?
Nice beardie. You can check the gender by looking directly above the vent. Two small lumps side to side is male. One large one above the vent is a female.:)
-
Dude, bearded dragons are so sweet. You don't even know it yet, but you just got 'forced' to pick up the best lizard pet there is (in my opinion). They're super chill, hearty, friendly... perfect.
So wild that someone would do that... but congrats!

Poor baby!!
Well, I'm glad you found him and that he has a good home now.

Well vet visit went ok, poor guy has some signs of pneumonia in his right lung :( I've got two weeks of injections to do and hopefully that works!
-
This is going to sound weird, but thank you so much for giving him a home and looking after him. People like you are the reason that I even bother socializing anymore. Best of luck to you and your new companion!
-
Thank you! I hope with the meds and my love I can make him right again :) poor little guy.
-
Thank you for having a heart and stopping to check it out :) He is good hands now! My 2nd beardie was a skeleton when I got her, her old owners feed her weekly.... Some people shouldn't own animals!
-
That is really horrible that he was just abandoned on the side of the road. Beardeds are such sweet lizards, poor thing.
Im glad you found him in time, good on you!

I agree, I wish there was a way to find out who did it. I wouldn't say anything... Just punch them in the mouth and walk away.

Sadly, I've seen this before. :(
I cannot thank you enough for taking him in!! And by the sounds of it, he found himself a damn good owner, too. He does look just a tad on the skinny side, but not by much, so it'll be easy getting the weight back on him. He has really pretty eyes, too. :D
Best of luck for the future! I'm glad he/she has found a good home. It's always warming to hear of a successful rescue! :D

Thank you, he is still sick tho :( he isn't taking well to the antibiotics we have tried a few different things but no matter what we do he still has buggers in his nose but he is doing better then he was when I got him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for him and going to keep trying different things to get him better

Awww, poor baby! :( Being thrown out on the curb at night can't have been good for him. Whoever did that needs a kick in the groin. :/ I really hope he gets better, he deserves it!

Hope your little guy gets better. Good for you taking the intiative and effort to take care of him and nurse him back to health.
Good looking beardy by the way, nice high yellows!
We have aquired several animals over the years in similar fashions, mainly cats that were left in boxes by the side of the road or at the ends of our driveway. Its amazing how careless some people can be...
