Newbie here, opinions?
First off I'd like to say thank you to the BP & herp community, after browsing this and other forums for the past...well forever it seems, I've learned so much. I've seen so many people willing to help etc. So thank you all, for being an awesome community. I'm getting my first Ball Python (hopefully) in about a month. (Daytona breeder's expo) Assuming I find a beautiful female I want. So here's where my question comes into play..I was planning on getting a female Lesser hatchling, as I hope to one day (you know, like 2.5-3yrs down the road) breed a pair. I'm not looking to make a quick buck or anything of the sort, I just feel that breeding a pair is something I would love to do. I wanted to get a female first, and have her for a year to year and a half then get a male. I also wanted to start out with a female that is visually different from the norms (though, I have seen some gorgeous norms on here!) and had some decent breeding combo potential. My initial price range for a female is 300-350 or less. Do you think a Lesser is a good choice? What would you start with if you were starting over? (in that price range :P) Thanks for any opinions and input!

Re: Newbie here, opinions?
Wouldn't you know it, the first opinion you get is from another newbie w/one snake to her name! Well, I wrestled over the decision too, and female lesser was high on my list. I finally got a female mojo because I saw one available that I liked and could meet in person before buying. That was under two months ago, and now I'm thinking about what my next 3 or 4 should be, LOL! Just thinking now, a lesser that's het for something else might be even more fun to breed with (but more $ of course). I'll be picking up a lesser or butter soon for sure, maybe het hypo. Let us know what you decide!

Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the base morphs. You certainly couldn't go wrong with a nice lesser, doesn't matter how new you are. I love my lesser girl, but then again I say that about all of my reptiles lol

Lesser are ome of my favorites. You cant go wrong with a nice lesser. I also love cinnamons and fires!

Thanks for the replies :) I think I'm set on the Lesser...but who knows.. might get distracted with all the gorgeous snakes at the show and end up with something else! ARGG I'm so excited...I can't wait! aug 18th needs to get here..like now! :please:
Mojo's are really pretty too..Love the spider morph combos, (queen bee's, lesserbee's, killer bees and all mixes) ...too many darn choices! My husband is pacing the floors lol I think he's afraid we'll be overrun with bp's before he knows it
Edit: Oh yes! Must have a fire too someday!

Re: Newbie here, opinions?
Hello, and :welcome: to BP.net. I'm more of a fan of Woma BP's, Genetic Stripes, and Genetic Banded BP's. But that is just me...:D

Re: Newbie here, opinions?
I would suggest thinking about what you would like to eventually have as a product of your bps. Once you have an idea of the direction you want to head in it will be much easier to decide on the female and male. Lessers are pretty cool though:) Good luck deciding!

Re: Newbie here, opinions?
When you go with a Lesser or Mojave you have Blue eye's in your future. "nough said":D I'd go Lesser all the way.

BEL's are the reason I picked Lesser's to begin with :gj: But as I played more with the genetics wizard and found more and more morphs I liked...Oh my! Definitely want a HGWoma one day (if they ever get lower in price lol) and phantoms.... The Mystics have some awesome potential it seems too! I'll be sure to post when I get her!:D

My advice for someone just starting is to get a rack! That way you're ready for a few more ASAP, and a few more won't take up any more space than the first one. I promise you will enjoy the hobby much sooner with a rack!

We are planning on building a rack system eventually. Probably around the time I get a male (1-1.5yrs) Trying to keep costs at a minimal right now as to not sticker shock my wonderful understanding hubby. I have a 29g tank (I know, tanks aren't that great) for her right now. Hides and waterbowl, check. Debating cypress or paper towels as bedding...need to pick up a decent heat mat and t-stat and I think I'm set. (already have a temp gun, screen lid with attached wood for humidity control) I plan on not using a bulb for heat, just the UTH currently. (Unless I notice once everything is set up that ambient needs to be raised) I live in florida, so the humidity without anything in the tank sits around 50%, I'll tweak that once I get the setup going fully (without her obviously) I want it perfect for her when she comes home ^_^ Alexis, what kind of questions did you have? I'm sure the community would be happy to help :)

I think a lesser is a great choice! But don't be surprised if you end up with way more than two ball pythons within the next year. We all say we are going to wait to get more, then none of us do. It really is an addiction!
My best advice, start with tubs and save yourself all the trouble of buying a glass tank and then having to scrap it.
You've come to the right place to learn everything about ball pythons! Welcome and have fun!

I know what you mean, but I have a glass tank already sitting empty in my house. So its more cost effective at this time to use it for my new girl and wait a bit to build the rack. I'm sure I will be upgrading to a rack soone than I think, but one sstep at a time right now lol. Though I do love the idea and (presumably) ease of set up of the xpvc racks I've seen built on the DIY boards! I'll get there ;-)

You don't need a rack for a tub setup. I had a tank. It's a huge pita to keep
Temps and humidity proper.
