    http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f7...1207030001.jpg

found this little guy/gal in my shed while I was weed eating today. can anybody tell me specifically what it is and if it'd make a nice addition to my pet snakes, I only have my BP but I thought he was probably a corn snake.

Do you a better picture? Looks like a rainbow boa if you give it a quick glance.

Better pictures would make identifying a lot easier! :gj: Some more light and an above shot would be perfect

he/she's pretty long, and was just laying under a mat on a shelf (I thought that was odd how a snake could climb up onto a shelf thats 3 feet off the ground)

Got a better picture of the pattern? Probably corn, but the head doesn't look completely "corny". If you keep it, make sure to quarantine it away from your bp.

And to think, my first instinct was to freeze and hope to the almighty snake gods that it wasn't a copperhead that I startled as much as it startled me. I may have to go out and get another tank :D anything particular or will a 10' work?

My corn at home has such a pointed little nose, just like that, haha. This picture is just distorted due to the snake moving, I think, making it look wider than it really is.

You found yourself a corn snake, they're great at keeping them pesky rodents out of sheds.

I'm debating on wether to keep the little fellow or just let him loose, but in any case, he got a free meal from me bugging em so he shouldn't have minded the experience if I cant keep em. I dont supposed there's a way I can tell if its male or female? Without checking that area, because I can't do it as I'm a novice and don't want to hurt the little guy.

A corn or a rat snake.

    Definitely a colubrid though.

I vote for a release back into the shed, they're gorgeous animals that do their job well. Just think of it as a super large enclosure, you'll see that bugger ever now and then and if he had hands you'd give him a high five for keeping the rodents at bay.

If you want a corn snake as a pet you would pay much less buying a CBB than it'd cost to purge that snake of parasites and get it acclimated to captive care.

Beautiful color and markings. Does it let you handle it? Wonder if someones pet got loose?

That's a corn, and I'd let him/her go and get yourself a nice CBB baby/adult like John said if you're looking into corns. No way to tell the sex unless you probe, but sometimes you can guess based on how the tail tapers after the cloaca. I wouldn't put an adult corn in a 10 gallon personally, I vote at least a 20 gallon long or a nice larger tub.

It's a corn snake. Better off releasing it, IMO. Wild caught can cause problems not only for the individual snake but can be hazardous to the rest of your animals. Let it be your token snake-in-the-woodshed. :gj:

What John said. Much cooler to have a wild animal volunteering to live on your property, then to put him through all he would have to go through to become a pet snake. (Vet trips, deparasitizing, acclimation, etc). Captive bred corn snakes are inexpensive and easy to find, if you want a pet corn. Let this guy be a wild snake. :)

He looks pretty friendly the way he peers at the camera. He might actually be an escaped pet. Anybody know a good way to tell the difference? Do captive corns act very different from wild caught ones?

If he's wild-caught, he'll probably be much, much happier staying wild. If he's an escapee, you can offer him a safer, longer life... but wild-caught adults tend to stress in captivity. And the quarantine issue is a big one.

    ps. he's gorgeous either way.

In my experience wild corns will only tag once if at all when reaching towards them. After they're in you hands they tend to be docile. I'd venture to guess you have a thriving, wild corn there.

Yep he's defintlay a corn, normal or classic. So most likey a wild corn :)
Corns are pretty docile wild or domesticated. He would be happy keeping the rodents out of your shed :)

should keep him for a few days, like someone else said he could be someone else's lost corn...

Maybe you should ask around before releasing or if he is wild IMO you should let him go! :)

I vote to let go and buy a cb. About 5 years ago I had found one in my garage. It did well for a month and ate at any feeding. Then it got an attitude but only towards me. Numerous friends would handle him fine but ANY time I was within reach it would bite me. It never bit anyone else. My friend thought it was hysterical!
