Marius in his evening attire (pic heavy warning)
Another little photo shoot with Marius, since he was showing off his nice evening white sides. :D
Right out of the enclosure.

Showing off the evening super high white sides

Of course, some of the rainbow shimmers, compliments of the flash.

Beginning to wonder why he's out of his enclosure.

This is the look he always gives me when I first set him down somewhere.

Pretty good shot for color, shimmers and high white sides.

This is what happens as soon as I stick my hand out near him, lol!

He's quite a handful now.

Pretty accurate colors and his odd back dot (he has a few further up his neck).

I love this pic, looks like he's smiling. :)

A head full of shimmer.

Terribly washed out, but.....look at that tongue!

A better shot of his neck "dots"

Practical death grip on my thumb. :D

Dumb question:
What is he?
He's gorgeous
-
Thank you! :) Marius is a Brazilian Rainbow Boa.
-
I love his head, it's so bp-like.
How old is he? :)
-
He's about 2 and a half years old now, I reckon. I got him back in January 2010 and he was just a tee-tiny little thing. :)
-
The coloring on him is extraordinary! Lovely pictures!
-
Lovely snake. His coloring is amazing!

Wow, he is gorgeous. I've never seen a Rainbow Boa before - now I want one. LOL
They don't seem to have the "boa" head - more like a bp head.
How big does a Rainbow boa get??

I believe they are firmly in the 5-7 foot range as adults, but they don't get nearly as heavy as the BCC or BCI. their colors are really unique, as the OP's pictures showcase. about the only "drawback" I'm aware of is their dependence on humidity, which a more critical husbandry component than for many other species.

What a really amazing color pattern. He is gorgeous.

Thanks! Their heads actually don't look anything like a BCI/BCC or a BP in my opinion. They are more wedge shaped, tapering narrowly near the mouth. wwmjkd is correct, their sizes pretty much max out at 7' for a female, but these guys stay very long and slender. They aren't a heavy snake and love to climb about. If I'm not mistaken, they are somewhat semi-arboreal in the wild, though they spend the majority of time on the ground. :)

Very right. Rainbow Boas require a very high humidity to keep from getting RIs and other problems. These snakes do not seem to have the scale rot problems that other snakes have from being in such a humid environment.

I agree, I love the Brazilian's color and patterns. :) Thanks a bunch for the compliment!

He's so handsome! I really love all that white glow. His name is great too - Les Mis, by any chance? :P
-
Thank you. :) He only gets those high white sides in the evening, all other times it is a muted version of his top color. And his name actually came from Anne Rice's books, Marius was one of her vampires. It kinda just sprang on me when I found a scrollwork M on his body: :D

So I have to ask - Do all BRBs get the white sides in the evening? And can you trick him into changing into the white sided pattern by cutting out all light from where he is at? Very unique trait in a snake, to say the least!

As far as I know it is a BRB trait (though I couldn't tell you if other species of Rainbows do it). I have not tried to trick Marius into changing to white by keeping him in a darkened room (that would be an interesting experiment and I might have to try it, lol!), but I have noticed that he is most bright white closer to when he shed and as he grows closer to his next cycle, the white lessens in brightness.

His evening attire is gorgeous!!!
-
:D Thank you. I have to agree. ;)
-
Awesome, thanks for answering my question. If you try to "trick" him into changing please post on here what your results are.
-
Marius is fantastic looking! What a lovely BRB!!!
-
Thank you! I definitely have to agree. ;)
