    911! Need help!
Ok so I got back from camping to find my big girl like this.
She laid eggs on may 30.
Looks like she's prolapsed and seems to be a small hard egg shaped thing in the cage.
Before anyone replies "take it to a vet" yes I realize that. But a vet herp vet is 3 hours away and who knows if I can get in tomorrow. So I need some advice for what to do for now.
Any help is appreciated...so far I've just tried soaking her in warm water.

She's now trying to pass an egg. Seems like there may be two inside her.
Her cage looks horrible, she's oozing a substance from her cloaca. It's kind of runny but clear.
She's managed to get like this in 2 days of me being gone. Her cage was clean when I left.

Looks like a messy situation. I've never dealt with anything like that, but I personally would try to gently massage the eggs out. If that didn't work, since the egg is pretty exposed, I would try to pop it with a needle, draw the fluids out and hope it passes and that the 2nd one works its way down. That is of course if I couldn't get a vet appointment ASAP. I'm not recommending you do this, nor do I know if you would be comfortable with it...just what would run through my mind and what I would see as a relatively minor risk compared to just leaving her be.

hmm, maybe try putting her in a tub with warm water to help pass the eggs and gently massage the area to help?

She's still in the warm water, if I touch her she sucks the egg back into her body. I'm going to try to just leave her in there a while and hope she passes it...it's gonna be a loooong night

Well I managed to get two hard eggs out of her, there's a third but it's much smaller and doesn't seem to want to move into sight of her cloaca. I'll give het a breakand see if I can get the last one out.http://img.tapatalk.com/a6fae3a7-61a7-5fbd.jpg

That's great so far Adriane! Hopefully the last one will come out soon.

Just out of curiosity, did it cross your mind to cut into the eggs?

The two eggs that came out look healthy? Or are they completely solid. So far shes done pretty well it looks like. If she passes that third egg and then seems to go back to normal i would say a trip to the vet isnt necesarily needed but only you can really be the judge of that.

    Keep us updated!

No, because I would have found it harder to work the egg out if it was deflated. After having them out I dont think it would have deflated much anyways. They were quite solid.
To get them out I used gravity and kept her tail end in the water and gently was able to work them out over time. They sure popped out with quite some pressure. The second egg was much easier to get out after that first one.

No they were not viable eggs, they were solid, I suppose how I would describe them is what I think a snake egg would feel if hard boiled.
Shes done well so far but she has not passed that last egg on her own.
Shes still acting ok, shes not lethargic in any way but looks painful.

    An update..
Its been a NIGHTMARE to try and get into a vet, the soonest I can get her in is tomorrow afternoon. And this may be something that requires surgury. I dont know the exotic vets, I havnt had to take any snakes to the vet expect once. I dont know who to trust, I have the option of two different vets. The first one (the one I've used before) has only a small appointment available and wouldnt be able to perform surgury that day. The other is a brand new vet practice so theres not much to read about them but they have an exotics vet and they can open the afternoon for me incase of surgury. As I mentioned before I live 2 1/2 hours away from the nearest exotics vet and its hard to work this all out.

I'm a VERY worried snake mama right now. Eagan was my first ever ball python and shes my precious girl. I'm so frusterated right now.

I might take my chances with the new one. If they can get you in and get whatever is necessary done right then and there. Hope she's ok! Good luck, and keep us posted.

Sounds like your doing all the right things so try to stay calm,
When you called the vet did they have any suggestions on what to do until you get her in?
I would take her to the vet who can open the time to operate if they have to, even if they are new they are exotic veterinarians and hopefully can help .
Thankfully I haven't had to deal with this type of issue before but you never know what the future holds so keep calm and keep everyone here updated.
Good luck to you an your girl!

Well we were able to get the last egg out the morning of the appointment but we felt another egg very far up her body, and she had a little scale rot going on by her cloaca. So were trying out some treatments and hopefully she'll pass it. Here's her egg inside of her! very cool picture.

:) your welcome! Thanks for your interest!
I hope it comes out ok too...were giving her a few days to relax and try and get her cloaca back to semi normalcy before we try to extract the last egg. Hopefully she moves it further down her body by then. Its so far up, this one would be hard to remove by hand.

I'm so glad we took a chance with this new vet because I'm very impressed! Much better attitude about the snake and she was very imfortmative and explained everything in detail. I'm relieved it went so well. I just hope she pulls out of this ok.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them? Lay a clutch of eggs then a few weeks later lay more?

Whoop! We got the last egg out!
Hopefully now she can recover no problem.
I think a nice year vacation from breeding is in order and hopefully this first time breeder won't repeat this problem.

This is the first time that I've seen this thread and I'm glad that I got to read all the way to the happy part! Very happy that she is alright and I don't see any problem in giving her a year off! How many eggs are you incubating from her right now?

    Thank you.
She laid 6 eggs, they all candled well but sadly didn't make it past a week.
So I'm hoping this is just a first timer problem and that she's not just a bad breeder.
    She's a reason I wanted to breed, she's my queen lady. :)
If she has complications again then I will retire her.

Mega bummer, sorry to hear that. :( Wonder what happened? May she provide better in future years. I'd bet you're proud of her though after coming through all that. What a tough snakes!

Wow, this has opened up a bunch of dangers involved with having female ball pythons that I never considered O.O I have a female galah cockatoo and the possibility of a egg bound bird is scary. Pretty much what happened to your girl but if you try to push out a birds egg they can shatter inside of them and kill them.

I was so relieved that this had a good ending, and the X-ray photo was really cool. I hope they gave you a copy considering what a Xray can cost lol

I used to breed cocktails a couple years back and I'm all too familiar with eggbinding in birds. Usually proves fatal.
That's probably why I was mostly so worried. Thought my snake was going to die. But the methods of treatment for a snake are much different than a bird.

yes unfortunately in breeding there are always risks.

Egg retention does happen on occasion, I don't usually know what causes it, but it is always stressful.

Glad you were able to get them all passed, and I would take the same approach for next season, giving her the year off.

Best of luck to both of you!
