Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
Usually not more than 30 minutes at a time. usually around 10-15 minutes.

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
Probably only 5-10 minutes at a time: only for cleaning, getting weights, or taking pictures.

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
I guess it would depend on the ball and how much time i have. I have a female that will probably always be a biter so she doesnt get handled as much but i have a huge female thats mellow as can be and ive fallen asleep with her on my chest watching tv (by accident) and she was still there an hour and a half later. but i try to handle most of them at least 30 min a week.

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
My GTP I usually will handle for 5 to 15 minutes. I go off how she acts. If she's calm and exploring I leave her to it, if she is pissy and nippy I will have a shorter session.
My BP will usual explore a bit then wrap my neck and hang out. He is very calm and seems to enjoy perching on my shoulders. I can pet his head too, at the base of a snakes head I think is the softest spot. Kinda like behind my dogs ear. I still don't usually keep him out an hour but I don't think he would mind. Mine is prob just under a year or about at it. He started his life as a kids pet so I'm sure he has some stories to tell.
My Hoggy I just got so she is just chillin in her new place. She is super cute! My fiancé even thinks so, who is not a snake person.

It really depends on the circumstances. There times when I will just hold them a little while, just checking them out. There are other times when sitting on a couch or something, they will just find a comfortable position and settle in and I may have them there for an hour. But if it is striaght hands on, I think 20 minutes is plenty.

I really don't handle mine. Just moving them for cleaning, weighing, pics, etc.

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
For my adult Perry she is totally a lover and always wants to be held. If I open her cage and she isn't digesting then she is reaching for my arm to wrap around. My new boy is much more cautious so I keep it between 5-15 min at a time. These two are my babies and like my children. So i spend a lot of time with them

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
Depends on the snake and their mood at the time. If they are relaxed, they stay out longer. My ball usually only gets 30 minutes at most. More often it's 15-20. My Dumeril gets about 20 minutes at a time. And my BCI will sometimes hang out with me for as long as an hour. She loves to be out though. The others get nervous after a bit. Her...she could be out over an hour and will still fight me when I try to put her back. Silly girl. But she has her days too...and on those days she may only be out for cleaning and water changes. You just have to learn how to gauge their moods.

I'm watching UFC tonight and my butter has spent the whole time watching with me.

Totally depends on the snake, and their mood. My boa, he could hang out for ever, never wants to go back. My male pastel and my bee, could both also probably hang out as long as you want. These are the three we use for visits to my daughters school. My normal male and mojave male, they are touch and go, depends on the day, but mostly mellow. My female pastel and my butter......well, let's just say they can be peaches. More often than not they are only good for about five minutes. So, we have no "set" times. Just depends on the snake, and their mood on a given day. You will learn to read them.

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
It depends. My foster, Loki (BP), I will sit with and hold for about 15-20 minutes, which is about long enough for him to decide it's safe to un-ball, explore me a little, explore the couch a little, then decide he wants to make a break for it.
My corn cross, Kira, I will hold until she stops and lifts her tail (which usually takes about 5 minutes!), scoot a paper towel under her butt and catch the poop, and then hold her until I decide I'm tired of constantly playing "staircase" with her (usually about 10 minutes).
Now Ryuu, my sweet BCI, I will have out for an hour or two, but some of the time it's not handling. He'll usually sit on me for about 20 minutes, then explore for a while, then settle down somewhere and just chill. Whenever he's exploring or chilling, I keep one hand on him to track him (since I'm usually watching TV at this time). I like my couch, because the only way he could get into it is by getting on the floor and going up underneath. That means he can poke around in the cushions all he wants, and since they're loose, I can just dig him out again. My boyfriend came home one day and asked, "why is your hand under the cushion?" (as I'm laying there watching TV). "Because Ryuu's in there" "Ohh.....you're weird." :)
My newest rescue, another BCI, I haven't held other than to clean his tub and give him a bath, since I am battling mites with him. :(

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
Typically I'll handle them for as long as it takes to clean the cage. There are a few that I like to handle a lot, but most of them are handled once a week during cage cleaning.
-
I let my animal decide how long, most of my balls don't mind being out for 20 mins before I can tell they want back in. But I'm pretty sure my Boas would be just fine being out and about all day.
-
Depends on the bp and what mood theyre in. Sometimes up to an hour but usually not much longer than that and thts rare. Normally its about 10 min handling sessions while i clean. I either pass them to my brother or just setup them in the recliner to chill while i clean out their tub.

10 minutes a week during clean up time

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
We started with 5 mins a crack and not more than 2 times per week. However depending on what the definition of "handle" is it varies for us. We probably had a 30+ minute go the other day. but that was the snake chilling on my chest while I was resting and my son was lying next to me. We usually let her crawl or curl up wherever she wants and we just watch her.
As far as active handling, we keep touching and picking up to a minimum.
Aaron (Serpent Merchant) also told us to learn from the snake. So if all our temps are spot on (they are) and something changes in the eating pattern, my guess would be we've had too much contact.
I like UFC with the snake comment. I watched it last night too. I think with snake in lap and a nice beverage on the side would have been perfect. We have some work before that chilling can go down however.

I don't know if this is a bad thing , but mine seems to always want to be out of the cage. Got him a week ago , he is around 3ft and breeder said he was relatively 2 1/2 3 years old. I would say he feel extremely comfortable I have had him out for hours , he hangs on my should or around my forearm and hand. Also loves to curl around my neck . I don't really "handle him or pet him a lot " when he is out but he does chill. Is this okay or should I lower the amount of time I have him out?

Not really a problem imo as long as he keeps eating and doesnt seem too stressed out from it.:gj:

Re: How long do you handle your snake for?
Funny you should ask. I've been TERRIFIED of snakes all my life. I would even refuse to touch my gf's corn snake. A few nights ago I held our BP. It was the first time holding her since we got her 2 months ago but also the first time ever holding a snake. She started exploring which made me nervous and start heating up which probably made her want to move around more! I got in about 1 min of holding but i think I'll hold her for longer next time. Probably the only "1 minute" response ha ha.

Maybe 10 mins tops depends on the animal. I have a few real shy ones that I really dont mess with to much other than to clean there tub.

You have to start somewhere, good job! Before you know it you will be head over heals. Bps are way more fun to handle than Corns, IMO.

Thanks! I'm already excited to hold her again tomorrow. She took another mouse on Monday (thank god last week wasn't a fluke) so gotta wait. The corn snake is way too all over the place for me. Its super skinny compared to the BP, but im just not too into the whole "slithering" thing.
